DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM
DISABLING SYSTEM
Turn ignition off and remove key. Disconnect negative battery cable and shield cable end. Disconnect SRS
control module electrical connector.
ACTIVATING SYSTEM
Connect SRS control module electrical connector. Ensure no one is in vehicle. Turn ignition on. Connect
negative battery cable. Go to SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK
.
DISPOSAL PROCEDURES
Several situations may arise requiring some form of disposal action, including:
Scrapping a vehicle containing deployed air bag modules and ETRs.
Scrapping a vehicle with live air bag modules and ETRs.
Disposal of a live but electrically faulty air bag module and/or ETR.
Disposal of a deployed air bag module and/or ETR.
DEPLOYED AIR BAG OR ETR
Deployed air bag modules and ETRs can be disposed of like any other part.
SCRAPPED VEHICLE
Undeployed air bag modules and ETRs CANNOT be disposed of without first being deployed. Contact
manufacturer for additional information.
UNDEPLOYED AIR BAG OR ETR
Undeployed air bag modules and Emergency Tensioning Retractor (ETR) seat belts CANNOT be disposed of
without first being deployed. Contact manufacturer for additional information.
POST-COLLISION INSPECTION
When a vehicle has been involved in a collision, certain components of the passive restraint system must be
inspected or replaced. See AIR BAG/SRS COMPONENT INSPECTION & REPLACEMENT TABLES

Observe these precautions when servicing the air bag system:
When working around SRS components and before any re pairs are performed, disable air bag system. See
DISABLING & ACTIVATI NG AIR BAG SYSTEM
.
Before straightening any damage to body, or before performing electrical arc-welding, disable air bag
system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM
.
Always wear safety glasses and gloves when ha ndling a deployed air bag module. Air bag module may
contain sodium hydroxide deposits wh ich are irritating to the skin.
Always use control module and impact sensors made by same manufacturer. Using components produced
by different manufacturers could cause acc idental air bag or ETR deployment.
DO NOT repair any portion of SRS wiring harness.
If any SRS component is dropped from a height greater than 1.6 feet (0.5 m), it must be replaced.
If SRS components show signs of damage, they must be replaced.
Always handle air bag module with tr im cover facing away from your body.
Always place air bag module on workbench with trim cover up, away from loose objects.

Unlocking
Steering lock positions
0For removing key
The steering is locked when the key is
removed from the steering lock. If
necessary, move steering wheel
slightly to allow the locking mechanism
to engage.

sumers, such as seat adjustment.

When leaving the vehicle, always remove the
key from the steering lock and lock the vehi-
cle. Do not leave children unattended in the
vehicle, or with access to an unlocked vehi-
cle. Unsupervised use of vehicle equipment
may cause an accident and / or serious per-
sonal injury.iThe key can only be withdrawn in
position0.
If necessary, move steering wheel
slightly to allow the key to be turned
clockwise to position1.
A warning sounds when the driver’s
door is opened and the key is in steer-
ing lock position0 or1.
The key can only be removed from the
steering lock with the gear selector le-
ver in positionP.
!To prevent accelerated battery dis-
charge and a possible dead battery, al-
ways remove the key from the steering
lock when the engine is not in opera-
tion.

Driving
Starting difficulties
If the engine does not start as described,
carry out the following steps:
Turn key in starter to position0 and re-
peat starting procedure.
Remember that extended starting at-
tempts can drain the battery.

Get a jump start (
page 281).
If the engine does not start after several
starting attempts, there could be a mal-
function in the engine electronics or in the
fuel supply system.

Notify an authorized Mercedes-Benz

Release the parking brake by pulling on

The indicator lampÉ in the instru-
ment cluster goes out.
Driving

Depress the brake pedal.

Place the gear selector lever in
positionD orR.

Release the brake pedal.

Carefully depress the accelerator
pedal.

When leaving the vehicle, always remove the
key from the steering lock and lock the vehi-
cle. Do not leave children unattended in the
vehicle, or with access to an unlocked vehi-
cle. Children could release the parking
brake, which could result in an accident
and / or serious personal injury.
iWait for the gear selection process to
complete before setting the vehicle in
motion.

Anti-theft systems
Anti-theft systems
Immobilizer
The immobilizer prevents unauthorized
persons from starting your vehicle.
Activating
Removing the key from the steering lock
activates the immobilizer.
Deactivating
Turning the key in the steering lock to
position2 (
page 33) deactivates the im-
mobilizer.
Anti-theft alarm
Once the alarm system has been armed, a
visual and audible alarm is triggered when
someone:

opens a door


opens the liftgate


opens the hood
The alarm will stay on even if the activating
element (a door, for example) is immedi-
ately closed.
The alarm system will also be triggered
when


someone attempts to raise the vehicle


unlocking and opening the driver’s
door with the mechanical keyArming the alarm system
The alarm system is armed after locking
the vehicle with the remote control. The
turn signal lamps flash three times to indi-
cate that the alarm system is activated. A
red lamp in the center console will flash af-
ter approximately 10 seconds when the
alarm system is completely armed
(
page 27).
iIn case the engine cannot be started
(vehicle’s battery is in order), the sys-
tem is not operational. Contact an au-
thorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck
Center or call 1-800-FOR-MERCedes
(in the USA), or 1-800-387-0100 (in
Canada).
iIf the alarm stays on for more than
20 seconds, an emergency call is initi-
ated automatically by the Tele Aid* sys-
tem (
page 171) provided Tele Aid
service was subscribed to and properly
activated, and that necessary cellular
service and GPS coverage are avail-
able.

Loss of remote control with folding key
If you lose a remote control or the folding
key, you should do the following:
Have the remote control deactivated
by an authorized Mercedes-Benz Light
Truck Center.

Report the loss of the remote control or
the folding key immediately to your car
insurance company.

If necessary have the mechanical lock
replaced.
Your authorized Mercedes-Benz Light
Truck Center will be glad to supply you
with a replacement.
Opening the doors from the inside
You can open a locked door from the in-
side. Open door only when conditions are
safe to do so.

If a door was locked, locking knob1
will move up.
!If you can no longer lock or unlock the
vehicle with the remote control, then
the batteries in the remote control are
discharged, the remote control is mal-
functioning or the vehicle battery is
drained.

Check the batteries in the remote
control and replace them if neces-
sary (
page 262).


Use the folding key to unlock or
lock the doors and the liftgate.


Check the vehicle battery
(page 278).


Synchronize the remote control
(page 263).
If the remote control is malfunctioning,
contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz
Light Truck Center.

door trays will come on when you open
a door.
When all doors are closed and no key is
inserted in the steering lock, the interi-
or lamps are switched off after a brief

The interior lighting and the entry / exit
lamps remain switched off in darkness,
even when you

Operating rear interior lighting with

switch.
The rear interior lighting goes on.
iIf the door remains open, the interior
lamps (except cargo compartment
lamp) switch off automatically after ap-
proximately 30 minutes.
iIf a lamp is switched on manually, it will
not go out automatically. This could
cause the battery to become dis-
charged.

Residual heat and ventilation
With the engine switched off, it is possible
to continue to heat or ventilate the interior
for up to 30 minutes. This feature makes
use of the residual heat produced by the
engine.
Activating
Turn the key in the steering lock to
position0 or1 (
page 33).

Press button° (
page 135).
The indicator lamp on button°
comes on.Deactivating

Press button°.
The indicator lamp on button°
goes out.
!If the °button on the automatic
climate control panel starts to flash,
this indicates that the air conditioning
system is losing refrigerant. The com-
pressor has turned itself off. The air
conditioning cannot be turned on
again.
Have the air conditioning system
checked at the nearest authorized
Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center.
iHow long the system will provide heat-
ing depends on the coolant tempera-
ture and the temperature set in the
climate control. The blower will run at
lower speed regardless of the air vol-
ume control setting.
iThe residual heat is automatically
turned off:

when the ignition is switched on


after about 30 minutes


if the coolant temperature is too
low


if the battery voltage drops

The power window must be resynchroni-
zed each time

after the battery has been discon-
nected.


if the power windows cannot be fully
opened (Express-open) or closed (Ex-
press-close).
Synchronizing the power windows

Switch on ignition.

Press the power window switches at
the symbolj until the side win-
dows are closed.
Hold the switches for approximately
one second.
The power window are synchronized.
Rear quarter windows*
The switches are on the upper part of the
center console.

Turn key in the steering lock to

Press and hold the upper part of
switches1 or2.
The corresponding window will move
downwards until you release the

When closing the windows, make sure that
there is no danger of anyone being harmed
by the closing procedure. The closing of the
windows can be immediately halted by
releasing the switch.

Turn the key in the steering lock to

Opening and closing the
sliding / pop-up roof

To open, close, raise or lower the
sliding / pop-up roof, move the switch
in the required direction1to4.
Release the switch when the roof has
reached the desired position.
Raising the roof

Press and hold the switch in
direction1.
The roof is raised at rear.
Lowering the roof

Pull and hold the switch in direction3.
The sliding / pop-up roof is lowered and
closed.Opening the sliding / pop-up roof auto-
matically

Briefly press switch in direction2.
The sliding / pop up roof will not open
completely.

Press switch again to open the
sliding / pop-up roof completely.
Stopping the roof

Briefly press the switch in any direc-
tion.
The movement of the roof will stop.
Synchronizing the sliding / pop-up roof
The power sliding / pop-up roof must be re-
synchronized each time after:

the battery has been disconnected


the sliding / pop-up roof has been
closed manually


the sliding / pop-up roof does not open
smoothly


a malfunction
Synchronizing

Remove the fuse from the fuse box
(page 287).

Replace the fuse in the fuse box.

Switch on ignition.

Press and hold the switch in
direction1 until the sliding / pop-up
roof is fully raised at the rear.
Hold the switch for approximately one
second.
The sliding / pop-up roof is synchro-
nized.
