The Product label with FCC ID and IC
certification number can be found in the
battery case of the SmartKey.
R Do not keep the SmartKey:
-with electronic devices, e.g. a mobile
phone or another SmartKey
- with metallic objects, e.g. coins or metal
foil
- inside metallic objects, e.g. a metal case
This can affect the SmartKey's
functionality.
Do not keep the KEYLESS-GO key in the
temperature-controlled cup holder.
Otherwise, the KEYLESS-GO key will not be
recognized.
Keep the SmartKey away from strong
magnetic fields. Otherwise, the remote
control function could be affected. SmartKey functions
:
& To lock the vehicle
; F To open/close the tailgate
= % To unlock the vehicle
X To unlock centrally: press the%
button.
If you do not open the vehicle within
approximately 40 seconds of unlocking:
R the vehicle is locked again.
R the theft deterrent locking system is
armed again.
X To lock centrally: press the&button. The SmartKey centrally locks/unlocks:
R
the doors
R the tailgate
R the fuel filler flap
When unlocking, the turn signals flash once.
When locking, they flash three times.
If you activate the acoustic locking
confirmation function you will hear the
following, depending on the date of
production of the vehicle:
R when locking
or
R one acoustic signal when unlocking and
three when locking
The audible signal can be activated and
deactivated using the on-board computer
(Y page 209).
When it is dark, the surround lighting also
comes on if it is activated in the on-board
computer (Y page 208). KEYLESS-GO
General notes Bear in mind that the engine can be started
by any of the vehicle occupants if there is a
KEYLESS-GO key in the vehicle.
Locking and unlocking centrally
You can start, lock or unlock the vehicle using
KEYLESS-GO. To do this, you only need carry
the SmartKey with you. When you touch the
surface of the sensors on the vehicle's
outside door handles, KEYLESS-GO
establishes a radio connection between the
vehicle and the SmartKey. When the engine
is started and whilst you are driving,
KEYLESS-GO also check
swhether a valid
SmartKey is in the vehicle by periodically
establishing radio contact.
You can combine the functions of KEYLESS-
GO with those of a conventional key. Unlock
the vehicle by using KEYLESS-GO, for SmartKey

Press the %button on the SmartKey.
X Pull handle :.
X Raise the tailgate.
Vehicles with the EASY-PAC Ktailgate: if
you pull handle :and then release it, the
tailgate opens automatically.
Closing G
WARNING
To prevent possible personal injury, always
keep hands and fingers away from the cargo
compartment opening whe nclosing the
tailgate. Be especially careful when small
children are around. X
Pull the tailgate down using recess :.
X Allow the tailgate to drop into the lock.
X Loc kthe vehicle if necessary with
the & button on the SmartKey or with
KEYLESS-GO.
i If a KEYLESS-GO key is detected in the
cargo compartment, the tailgate will not
lock. Opening/closing automatically from
outside
Important safety notes G
WARNING
Make sure the tailgate is closed when the
engine is running and while driving. Among
other dangers, deadly carbon monoxide (CO) gases may enter vehicle interior resulting in
unconsciousness and death.
! The tailgate swings upwards and to the
rear when opened. Therefore, make sure
that there is sufficient clearance above and
behind the tailgate.

Opening the tailgate automatically You can open the tailgate automatically using
the SmartKey or the handle in the tailgate.
X
Press and hold the Fbutton on the
SmartKey until the tailgate opens.
or
X If the tailgate is unlocked, pull the handle
and let it go again immediately.
Closing the tailgate automatically G
WARNING
Monitor the closing procedure carefully to
make sure no one is in danger of being
injured. To prevent possible personal injury,
always keep hands and fingers away from the
cargo compartmento peningwhen closing the
tailgate. Be especially careful when small
children are around. To stop the closing
procedure, do one of the following:
R Press or pull the remote tailgate opening/
closing switch on the driver's door.
R Press the tailgate closing switch.
R Press the KEYLESS-GO locking/closing
switch.
R Pull outside handle on the tailgate.
R When no SmartKey is inserted in the starter
switch (vehicles with KEYLESS-GO: Make
sure the vehicle's on-board electronics
have status 0): Press button Fon the
SmartKey. 86

Closing button and locking button (example:
vehicle with the EASY-PACK tailgate and KEYLESS-

To close: press closing button :on the
tailgate.
or
X Press and hold the Fbutton on the
SmartKey until the tailgate closes.
Vehicles with the EASY-PACK system tailgate
and KEYLESS-GO :you can simultaneously
close and lock the tailgate.
X Press locking button ;on the tailgate.
If a KEYLESS-GO key is detected outside
the vehicle, the tailgate closes and locks.
i The tailgate cannot be opened and closed
with the SmartKey if there is a SmartKey in
the ignition.
If the tailgate touches an object while
closing, the closing procedure is
interrupted and the tailgate reopens.
i If a KEYLESS-GO key is detected in the
cargo compartment, the tailgate will not
lock. Opening/closing automatically from
inside

the door-mounted remote tailgate switch.
