Vehicle equipment
i This manual describes all the standard
and optional equipment of your vehicle
which was available at the time of
purchase. Country-specific differences are
possible. Bear in mind that your vehicle
may not feature all functions described
here. This also refers to safety-related
systems and functions.
Occupant safety
Overview of occupant safety
In this section you will learn the most
important facts about the restraint system
components of the vehicle.
The restraint systems are:
R Seat belts
R Child restraint systems
R LATCH-type (ISOFIX) child seat anchors
Additional protection is provided by:
R SRS (Supplemental Restraint System)
R NECK-PRO head restraints
R PRE-SAFE ®
R Air bag system components with:
- PASSENGER air bag OFF indicator lamp
- USA only: front passenger seat with
Occupant Classification System (OCS)
- Canada only: front passenger seat with
BabySmart™ air bag deactivation system
The different air bag systems work
independently of each other. The protective
functions of the systems work in conjunction
with each other. Not all air bags are deployed
in an accident.
GWarning
Modifications to or work improperly
conducted on restraint system components
or their wiring, as well as tampering with
interconnected electronic systems, can lead
to the restraint systems no longer functioning
as intended.
Air bags or Emergency Tensioning Devices
(ETDs), for example, could deploy
inadvertently or fail to deploy in accidents
although the deceleration threshold for air
bag deployment is exceeded. Therefore,
never modify the restraint systems. Do not
tamper with electronic components or their
software.

SRS (Supplemental Restraint System)
Introduction
SRS reduces the risk of occupants coming
into contact with the vehicle's interior in the
event of an accident. It can also reduce the
effect of the forces to which occupants are
subjected during an accident.
SRS consists of:
R the 6 SRS warning lamp
R air bags
R air bag control unit (with crash sensors)
R belt tensioners
R belt force limiters
SRS warning lamps
SRS functions are checked regularly when
you switch on the ignition and when the
engine is running. Therefore, malfunctions
can be detected in good time.
The 6 SRS warning lamp in the instrument
cluster lights up when the ignition is switched
on. It goes out no later than a few seconds
after the engine is started.
The SRS components are in operational
readiness when the 6 SRS warning lamp
goes out while the engine is running.

Removing a child restraint system/
deactivating the special seat belt retractor:XAlways comply with the manufacturer's
installation instructions.XPress the seat belt release button and
guide the belt tongue to the belt outlet.
The special seat belt retractor function is
deactivated.GWarning
Never release the seat belt buckle while the
vehicle is in motion, since the special seat belt
retractor will be deactivated.
LATCH-type child restraint (ISOFIX) in
the rear
GWarning
Observe "Important safety notes"
( Y page 60).
GWarning
Children that are too large for a child restraint
must travel in seats using normal seat belts.
Position shoulder belt across the chest and
shoulder, not face or neck.
In order to attain the correct seating position
for children weighing over 41 lb (18 kg), it may
be necessary to use a booster seat until they
reach a height where a normal lap/shoulder
seat belt lies properly across their bodies
without the need for a booster seat.
Install the child restraint system according to
the manufacturer's instructions.
The child restraint system must be installed
firmly on both brackets.
An incorrectly installed child restraint system
can come loose in the event of an accident,
causing the child to be severely or fatally
injured.
Child restraint systems/child restraint
retaining brackets that are damaged or have
suffered damage due to an impact must be
replaced.
ISOFIX is a standardized securing system for
specially designed child restraint systems on
the rear seats. Securing rings for two LATCH-
type (ISOFIX) child restraint systems are
installed on the left and right of the rear seats.
Use the vehicle's seat belts to install child
restraint systems without the ISOFIX
securing system. Follow the manufacturer's
instructions for of child restraint systems.
! Vehicles with a center seat in the rear:
when installing the LATCH-type (ISOFIX)
child restraint system, make sure that the
seat belt for the center seat does not get
trapped. Otherwise, the seat belt could be
damaged.
Installation instruction : indicates the
installation point of securing ring 2.
XMove the rear seat backrest of the
electrically adjustable rear seat to the
upright position ( Y page 102).XFold upholstered lining = and the Velcro
fastener upwards.XTurn installation aid ? to a vertical
position, so that upholstered lining = does
not fold back down.XInstall the LATCH-type (ISOFIX) child
restraint system on both securing
rings ;. Comply with the manufacturer's
instructions when installing the LATCH-

Never change the rear seat position after
installing the child restraint. This could
R damage the child restraint
R introduce undesirable slack or tension into
the seat belt
R loosen the child restraint
R misposition the child restraint
All of the above will lessen the
effectiveness of the child restraint and thus
increase the chance or severity of injury in
an accident.
Top TetherGWarning
Observe "Important safety notes"
( Y page 60).
Top Tether provides an additional attachment
point between the "LATCH" type child seat
mount (ISOFIX) child restraint system and the
rear seat. This can further reduce the risk of
injury.
The Top Tether anchorages are located in the
rear compartment behind the head restraints.
XVehicles with electrically adjustable rear
seats: move the rear seat backrest to an
upright position ( Y page 102).XRemove corresponding protective cap :
from the Top Tether anchorage.XPlace protective cap : in a suitable place
(e.g. in the glove box).XSlide the head restraint upwards.XRoute Top Tether belt ? under the head
restraint between both head restraint bars.XEngage Top Tether hook = of Top Tether
belt ? into Top Tether anchorage ;.
Make sure that:
R Top Tether hook = is engaged in Top
Tether anchorage ;, as illustrated.
R Top Tether belt ? is not twisted.
R Top Tether belt ? can move freely
between the rear seat backrest and the
head restraint.XInstall the LATCH-type (ISOFIX) child
restraint system with Top Tether. Always
comply with the manufacturer's
installation instructions. Make sure that
Top Tether belt ? is taut.
The child restraint system with Top Tether
belt ? has been removed:
