Adaptive Highbeam Assist automatically
swit ches between thefo llowing types of light:
R Low-beam headlamps
R High-beam headlamps
At speeds abo ve19 mp h (3 0 km/h):
R If no other road users are de tected, the high
beam is switched on automaticall y.The high beam switches off automatically:
R Atspeeds below 16mp h (25 km/h).
R Ifot her road users are de tected.
R Ifstre et lighting is suf ficient.
At speeds abo veappr oximately 31mph
(50 km/h):
R The headlamp range of the low beam is regu‐
lated automatically based on the dis tance to
ot her road users.
The sy stem's optical sensor is located behind
th e windshield near theov erhead control panel.
Switching Adaptive Highbeam Assist on/off #
Toswitch on: turnthe light switch tothe
0058 position. #
Switch on the high beam using the combina‐
tion switch.
When the high beam is switched on automat‐
ically in the dar k,the 00CE indicator lamp on
th e multifunction display comes on. #
Toswitch off: switch offthe high beam
using the combination switch. Switching

Press and hold button 1.

bly engage in position. The mir ror is set in

WARNING Risk of bu rns and poisoning
due tothe anti- glare mir ror electrolyte
Electrolyte may escape if theglass in an
automatic anti-glare mir ror breaks.
The electrolyte is harmful and causes ir rita‐
tion. It mu stnot come into contact wi thyour
skin, eyes,respiratory organs or clo thing or
be swallo wed. #
Ifyo u come into contact with electro‐
ly te , obser vethefo llowing:
R Rinse the electrolyte from your skin
and seek medical attention immedi‐
atel y.
R If electrolyte comes into contact
with your eyes, rinse them thor‐
oughly with clean water and seek
medical attention immediately.
R Ifth e electrolyte is swallo wed,
immediately rinse your mouth out
th oroughly. Do not induce vomiting.
Seek medical attention immediately.
R Immedia tely ch ange out of clo thing
which has come into con tact wi th
electrolyte.
R If an allergic reaction occurs, seek
medical attention immediatel y. The inside
rearview mir ror and the outside mir‐
ro r on the driver's side automatically go into
anti- glare mode if light from a headlamp hits the
sensor on the inside rearview mir ror. 12 0

Night View Assi stis only an aid. The driver is
re sponsible forth e dis tance totheve hicle in
front, forve hicle speed, for braking in good time
and forst ay ing in lane.
% As inf rare d light is not visible tothe human
ey e, Night View Assi stcan remain activated
when there is oncoming traf fic.
The infrared headlamps switch on in the
dark from speeds of appr oximately 5 mph
(10 km/h). This means that, while station‐
ar y, yo u do not ha vethe full visual range and
cannot check whe ther Night View Assi stis
wo rking.
Sy stem limitations
Night View Assi stcannot displ ayobjects directly
in front of or directly next totheve hicle. It may
be the case that objects are highlighted as well
as pedestrians or animals.
The sy stem may be impaired or may not function
in thefo llowing ins tances:
R in poor visibility, e.g. sno w,rain, fog or heavy
spr ay. R
the windshield is dirty in the vicinity of the
came ra.
R the camera is fogged up, damaged or cov‐
ered.
R the infra red camera in thera diator grill is
damaged, dirty, fogged up or co vered.
R on bends, on hilltops or in dips.
R at high ambient temp eratures.
Fu nction of pedestrian and animal de tection
of Night View Assist
Night View Assi stcan de tect pedestrians using
typical characteristics, e.g. the body conto urs
and posture of a person standing upright.
Lar geanimals, e.g. deer, co wsor horses, can
also be de tected. Smaller animals, e.g. dogs or
cats, are not de tected.
Pe destrian and animal de tection is au tomatically
switched on when thefo llowing requirements
are fulfilled:
R Night View Assi stis activated.
R The driving speed is at least 5 mph
(10 km/h). R

Re quirements:
R The vehicle has been star ted or the ignition
is switched on.
R The light switch is in the0058 or0058 posi‐
tion.
R Reversege ar has not been engaged. #
Press button 1.
The appropriate Night View Assi stdisplay
appears in the multifunction displa y.
% The infrared headlamps are deactivated at
speeds below 3 mph (5 km/h). The Night
Vi ew image continues tobe displa yed until
yo u swit chit off bypressing button 1.
Switching automatic activation on/off
Re quirements:
R Pedestrian de tection is acti ve (→page 200).
R The roadw ayis not lit.
R The speed is at least 37mph (60 km/h).
If all there qu irements are fulfilled, the night
vision image is automatically shown in the multi‐
function display as soon as people or animals
are de tected.

The spotlight function is an additional function
fo
r Night View Assi st. It runs in the bac kground
and flashes the headlamps at de tected persons
wi th four sho rtimpulses. This att racts the driv‐

The pedestrian symbol in the assis tance graphic
indica testh est atus of the spotlight function. If
th e pedestrian symbol is displa yed dark 1,the
function is switched on. If the symbol is dis‐ pla
yed bright 2,the conditions forth e Spotlight
function are also fulfilled.
Sy stem limitations
The spotlight function does not flash at animals.
The spotlight function is not active or is active
on lyto a limited extent if:
R You are driving in city traf fic.
R The pedestrians are loca ted in the area of an
oncoming vehicle or a vehicle in front.
Ac tivating/deactivating the spotlight func‐
tion
Re quirements:
R Pedestrian de tection is acti ve (→page 200).
R The roadw ayis not lit.
R The speed is at least 37mph (60 km/h).
R Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus is swit ched
on.

ve hicle and 10ft(3 m) directly next toyour vehi‐
cle.
If a vehicle is de tected at speeds ab ove appr ox‐
imately 8 mph (12 km/h) and this vehicle subse‐
qu ently enters the monitoring range di rectly next
to yo urvehicle, thewa rning lamp in the outside
mir ror lights up red.
If a vehicle is de tected close tothe side of your
ve hicle, there dwa rning lamp in the outside mir‐
ro rflashes. If you swit chon the turn signal indi‐
cator in the cor responding direction, a warning 202

Driving sy stems and driving saf ety sy stems may be malfunctioning or temp orarily una vailable.
Once the cause of the problem is no longer present, driving sy stems and driving saf ety sy stems will be available
again.
