aids. They are not a substitute foryo ur attention
to the sur roundings and do not relie ve you of your

distance totheve hicle in front, forve hicle speed,
fo r braking in good time and for st aying in lane.

If th e area around vehicle senso rsor cameras
is co vered, damaged or dirty, cer tain driving
and saf ety sy stems cannot function co rrectl y.
There is a risk of an accident. #
Keep the area around vehicle senso rsor
cameras clear of any obst ructions and
clean. #
Have damage tothe bumper, radiator
gr ille or stone chipping in the area of the
front and rear wind owsre paired at a
qu ali/ed specialist workshop. Pa
rticular ly,ke ep the areas around the sensors
and cameras free of dirt, ice or slush
(/ page 372). The sensors and cameras must
not be co vered and the de tection ranges around
th em must be kept free. Do not at tach additional
licence plate brac kets, advertisements, stic kers,
fo ils or foils toprotect against stone chippings in
th e de tection range of the sensors and cameras. Make sure
that there are no overhanging loads
pr otru ding into the de tection range.
If th ere is damage toa bumper or thera diator
gr ille, or aTer an impact, ha vethe function of the
senso rschecked at a quali/ed specialist work-
shop. Ha vedamage or stone chipping in the area
of the cameras on the front and rear wind ows
re paired at a quali/ed specialist workshop.

regula testhe
brake pressure in critical driving situations:
R During braking, for instance, at maximum full-
stop braking or if there is insu1cient tyre trac-
tion, the wheels are pr evented from locking.
R Vehicle steerability while braking is ensure d.
If ABS inter venes when braking, you will feel a
pulsing in the brake pedal. The pulsating brake
pedal can be an indication of hazardous road con-
ditions and can ser veas a reminder totake extra
care while driving.

If BAS is malfunctioning, the braking distance
in an emer gency braking situation is
increased. #
Dep ress the brake pedal with full forc e in
emer gency braking situations. ABS pre-
ve nts the wheels from locking. The Brake Assist System (BAS) supports
your
emer gency braking situation with additional brake
fo rc e.
If yo u depress the brake pedal quickl y,BAS is

If th eve hicle is braked sharply from speeds abo ve
50 km/h, the brake lamps 0ash rapidl y.This pro- vides
tra1c tr avelling behind you with an even
more noticeable warning.
If th eve hicle is tr avelling at speeds of more than
70 km/h at the beginning of the brake applica-
tion, the hazard warning lights switch on once the
ve hicle is stationar y.When you pull away again,
th e hazard warning lights will switch o. automati-
cally at appr oximately 10 km/h. You can also
switch o. the hazard warning lights using the haz-
ard warning button. A

% The microsleep de tection subfunction is only

era.
AT TENTION ASSIST assists you on long, mono to-
nous journe ys, e.g. on mo torw ays and trunk
ro ads. If indicators of fatigue or increasing lapses
in concentration on the part of the driver are
de tected, the system suggests taking a break. 234

TENTION ASSIST is only an aid. It cannot
alw ays de tect fatigue or lapses in concentration in
time. The system is not a substitute for a well-res-
te d and attentive driver. On long journe ys,ta ke
re gular breaks in good time that allow for ade-
qu ate recuperation.
Yo u can choose between two settings:

tion are de tected, theATTENTION ASSIST: Take
a break! warning appears in the driver's displa y.
Yo u can ackno wledge the message and take a
break where necessar y.Ifyo u do not take a break
and ATTENTION ASSIST continues todetect
increasing lapses in concentration, you will be
wa rned again aTer a minimum of 15 minutes. The
following information is displa yed in the driv-
er's displa y:
R The length of the journey since the last break
R The attention le vel de term ined byATTENTION
ASSIS T:
- The more segments 2ofthe circle dis-
pla yed, the higher the de tected attention
le ve l.
- Fewe r segments 2are displa yed in the
circle as the attention le vel decreases.
R Microsleep de tection 1status:
- Deacti vated: display 1is hidden. -
Activated but not operational: display 1
is grey.
- Activated and operational: display 1is

If AT TENTION ASSIST is unable tocalculate the
attention le vel and cannot issue a warning, the
System suspended message appears.
If th e system, which uses the driver camera,
de tects indicators of microsleep, theATTENTION
ASSIST Microsleep Take a break! warning mes-
sage appears in the driver's display and a warning
to ne sounds simultaneousl y.This warning mes-
sage must be con/ rmed byTouch Control. It is
re commended that youta ke a break immediatel y.
If a warning is given in the driver's displa y,the
multimedia system o.ers tosear chfor a rest
area. You can select a rest area and start naviga-
tion tothis rest area.
If yo ure start theve hicle, ATTENTION ASSIST with
mic rosleep de tection is automatical lyactivated.

AT TENTION ASSIST is active in the 60 km/h to
200 km/h speed range.
The mic rosleep de tection function is available at a
speed of 20 km/h and abo ve.
Pa rticular lyin thefo llowing situations, ATTENTION
ASSIST only functions in a restric ted manner and
wa rnings may be dela yed or not occur:
R Ifyo u ha vebeen driving for less than appr ox-
imately 30 minutes.
R Ifth ero ad condition is poor (une venro ad sur-
fa ce or po tholes).
R Ifth ere is a strong side wind.
R Ifyo u adopt a sporty driving style (high corner-
ing speeds or high rates of acceleration).
R Ifth eSt eering Assist function of Active Dis-
ta nce Assist DISTRONIC is active.
R Ifth e clock is set tothe incor rect time.
R Ifyo uch ange lanes and vary your speed fre-
qu ently in active driving situations. Microsleep de
tection also does not function when
th e driver camera cannot de tect the driver's eyes,
fo rex ample as a result of thefo llowing factors:
R The driver's eyes are co vered due tothe steer-
ing column position, forex ample.
R Poor lighting conditions.
R Some types of spectacles or sunglasses.
R The driver's line of vision is outside the driver
camera's /eld of vision.
Also obser veany information rega rding display

The tiredness and alert ness assessment of
AT TENTION ASSIST with mic rosleep de tection is
re set and restar ted when continuing the journey
in thefo llowing situations:

sponding steering wheel buttons (/ page 240).
Yo u can store any speed abo ve20 km/h up tothe
maximum design speed or up tothe set winter
tyre limit. You can also per form settings while the
ve hicle is stationary if theve hicle has been star-
te d.

If yo u depress the accelerator pedal be yond the
pressure point (kickdown), theva riable limi ter

variable limi ter is reactivated in thefo llowing
situations:
R Ifth eve hicle speed drops below the stored
speed.

If th eve hicle should ne verex ceed a speci/c
speed (e.g. for driving in winter tyre mode), you
can set this speed with the permanent limiter.
Yo u do this by limiting the speed between
160 km/h and 240 km/h in the multimedia sys-
te m (/ page 237).
Shortly before the set speed is reached, it
appears in the driver's displa y.When you con/rm
th e message, display messages no longer appear
until you switch o. theve hicle. The speed will
only be displ ayed again once theve hicle has been
re star ted or if the set speed is changed.
The permanent limi ter does not switch topassive
mode even during kickdown and the driven speed

Ac tive Distance Assist DISTRONIC maintains the
set speed on free-0owing roads. If vehicles in
front are de tected, the set distance is maintained,
if necessar y,until theve hicle comes toa halt. The
ve hicle accelerates or brakes depending on the
distance totheve hicle in front and the set speed.
The speed and distance totheve hicle in front are
set and sa ved using the steering wheel.
Ac tive Distance Assist DISTRONIC is available in
