imately 40 seconds af ter unlocking:
RThe vehicle is loc ked again.
RAnti- theft pr otection is reactivated.
Do not keep the SmartK eytoget her with elec‐
tronic devices or me tal objects. This can af fect
th e SmartK ey's functionality.
Do not keep the SmartK eyinthete mp erature-
controlled cup holder. Otherwise, the SmartK ey
will not be reliably de tected.
% If battery check lamp 2does not light up

battery is dischar ged.

Activating/deactivating the acoustic lo cking
ve rification signal

Changing the unlocking settings
Po ssible unlocking functions of the SmartK ey:
RCentral unlo cking
RUn locking the driver's door and fuel filler flap
#To switch between settings: pressthe
% and& buttons simultaneously for
appr oximately six seconds until the battery
ch eck lamp flashes twice.
If th e unlocking function forth e driver's door
and fuel filler flap has been selecte d:
RPressingthe% button a second time cen‐
trally unloc kstheve hicle.
RVe hicles with KEYLESS-GO: Ifyo uto uch
th e inner sur face of the door handle on the driver's door, only
the driver's door and fuel
fi ller flap are unlo cked.
Re ducing the energy consu mption of the
SmartK ey
Allvehicles: ifyo u do not use theve hicle or a
SmartK eyfor an extended pe riod of time, you
can reduce the energy consum ption of the
re spective SmartK ey.To do so, deactivate the
SmartK eyfunctions.
#To deactivate: pressthe& button on the
SmartK eytwice in rapid succession.
The battery check lamp of the SmartK ey
fl ashes twice brief lyand lights up once.
#To activate: press any button on the Smart‐
Ke y.
% When theve hicle is star ted with the Smart‐
Ke yin thestow age compartment of the cen‐
te r console, the SmartK eyfunctions are
au tomatical lyactivated (
→page 167).
Ve hicles with KEYLESS-GO: Automatic deacti‐
va tion of the SmartK eyfunctions occurs af ter a
fe w minutes if the SmartK eyis not mo vedth us

reducing the po wer consum ption of the Smart‐
Ke y.When deactivated, the SmartK eycannot be
accessed wi thout authorization.
To activate the SmartK eyfunctions:
RPress any button on the SmartK ey.
RMo vethe SmartK ey.
RStart theve hicle with the SmartK eyinthe
stow age compartment of the center console
(
→page 167).
Inser ting/ removing the mechanical key
#To remo ve:press release knob 1.
Mechanical key2 is pushed out slight ly.
#Pull ou tme chanical key2 until it en gage s in
th e intermediate position.
% You can use the intermediate position of
mechanical key2 toattach the SmartK ey
to ake yring.
#Press release knob 1again and fully
re mo vemechanical key2.
#To inser t:press release knob 1.
#Insert mechanical key2 tothe intermediate
position or fully until it engages.
Re placing the SmartK eybattery

st ances. Swallowing batte ries may cause

#Take the mechanical keyout of the SmartK ey
(→page 60).
#Insert the mechanical keyin to the trunk lock
as far as it will go.

Anti-theft protection
Fu nction of the immobilizer
The immobilizer pr events your vehicle from being
st ar ted without the cor rect SmartK ey.
The immobilizer is automatically activated when
th e ignition is switched off and deactivated when
th e ignition is switched on.
When leaving theve hicle, alw aysta ke the Smart‐
Ke ywit hyo u and lock theve hicle. An yone can
st art the engine if a valid SmartK eyhas been left
inside theve hicle.
% Ifth eeve ntthat the engine cannot bestar‐
te d (y ettheve hicle's battery is charge d), the
sy stem is not operational. Contact an
authorized Mercedes-Benz Center or call
1-800-FO R-MERCedes (in the USA) or
1-800-387-0 100 (in Canada).
ATA (anti-theft alarm system)
Fu nction of theATA system (anti-theft ala rm
sy stem)
If th eATA system is armed, a visual and audible
alarm is triggered in thefo llowing situations:
RA door is opened.
RThe trunk lid is opened.
RThe hood is opened.
The ATA sy stem is armed automatically af ter
appr oximately 10seconds:
RAfter locking theve hicle with the SmartK ey.
RAf ter locking theve hicle using KEYLESS-GO.
When theATA system is armed, indicator lamp
1 flashes.
The ATA sy stem is automatically deactivated:
RAf ter unlocking theve hicle with the Smart‐

SmartK eyinside theve hicle.
