XPull over and stop the vehicle safely as soon as possible, payingattention to road and traffic conditions.
XSecure the vehicle against rolling away (Ypage 146).
XSwitch the ignition off.
XOpen the front-passenger door.
XRemove the child and the child restraint system from the front-passenger seat.
XMake sure that there are no objects on the seat adding to theweight.The system might otherwise detect the additional weight andinterpret the seat occupant's weight as greater than it actually is.
XKeep the seat unoccupied, close the front-passenger door andswitch on the ignition.
XObserve the PASSENGER AIR BAG indicator lamps in the centerconsole and the multifunction display and check the following:
Seat unoccupied and ignition switched on:
Ra self-diagnosis is carried out. The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFFand PASSENGER AIR BAG ON indicator lamps must light upsimultaneously for approximately six seconds.
Rthe PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp must then lightup and remain lit after the self-diagnosis. If the indicator lampis on, OCS (Occupant Classification System) has disabled thefront-passenger front air bag and front-passenger knee air bag(Ypage 48)

Towing and tow-starting
Important safety notes
GWARNING
When towing or tow-starting another vehicle
and its weight is greater than the permissi-
ble gross weight of your vehicle, the:
Rthe towing eye could detach itself
Rthe vehicle/trailer combination could roll-
over.
There is a risk of an accident.
When towing or tow-starting another vehi-
cle, its weight should not be greater than
the permissible gross weight of your vehicle.
Details on the permissible gross vehicle weightof your vehicle can be found on the vehicleidentification plate (Ypage 320).
!When Active Brake Assist, Active DistanceAssist DISTRONIC or the HOLD function isactivated, the vehicle brakes automaticallyin certain situations.
To avoid damage to the vehicle, deactivatethese systems in the following or similar sit-uations:
Rwhen towing the vehicle
Rin the car wash
!Only secure the tow rope or tow bar at thetowing eyes. Otherwise, the vehicle could bedamaged.
!Do not use the towing eye for recovery,this could damage the vehicle. If in doubt,recover the vehicle with a crane.
!When towing, pull away slowly andsmoothly. If the tractive power is too high,the vehicles could be damaged.
!Do not tow with sling-type equipment. Thiscould damage the vehicle.
!When towing away vehicles with KEYLESS-GO, use the key instead of the Start/Stopbutton. The automatic transmission mayotherwise shift to position]when you
open the driver's or front-passenger door,which could damage the transmission.
!Make sure that the electric parking brakeis released. If the electric parking brake isfaulty, visit a qualified specialist workshop.
!You may tow the vehicle for a maximumdistance of 30 miles (50 kilometers). A tow-ing speed of 30 mph (50 km/h) must not beexceeded.
For towing distances over 30 miles(50 kilometers), the entire vehicle must beraised and transported.
!When you are tow-starting or towinganother vehicle, its weight must not exceedthe maximum permissible gross weight ofyour vehicle.
It is better to have the vehicle transportedthan to have it towed away.
The automatic transmission must be in posi-tion\\when the vehicle is being towed away.
The battery must be connected and charged.Otherwise, you:
Rcannot turn the SmartKey to positionHinthe ignition lock
Rcannot shift the automatic transmission toposition\\
Deactivate the automatic locking featurebefore the vehicle is towed (Ypage 201). Youcould otherwise be locked out when pushingor towing the vehicle.

GWARNING
Overloaded tires can overheat, causing a
blowout. Overloaded tires can also impair
the steering and driving characteristics and
lead to brake failure. There is a risk of acci-
dent.
Observe the load rating of the tires. The load
rating must be at least half of the GAWR of
your vehicle. Never overload the tires by
exceeding the maximum load.
Two instruction labels on your vehicle showthe maximum possible load.
(1) The Tire and Loading Information placardis on the B-pillar on the driver's side. TheTire and Loading Information placardshows the maximum permissible numberof occupants and the maximum permissi-ble vehicle load. It also contains details ofthe tire sizes and corresponding pressuresfor tires mounted at the factory.
(2) The vehicle identification plate is on theB-pillar on the driver's side. The vehicleidentification plate informs you of thegross vehicle weight rating. It is made upof the vehicle weight, all vehicle occu-pants, the fuel and the cargo. You can alsofind information about the maximum grossaxle weight rating on the front and rearaxle.
The maximum gross axle weight rating isthe maximum weight that can be carriedby one axle (front or rear axle). Neverexceed the maximum load or the maxi-mum gross axle weight rating for the frontor rear axle.

Determining the correct load limit
Step-by-step instructions
The following steps have been developed asrequired of all manufacturers under Title 49,Code of U.S. Federal Regulations, Part 575pursuant to the "National Traffic and MotorVehicle Safety Act of 1966".
XStep 1:Locate the statement "The com-bined weight of occupants and cargo shouldnever exceed XXX kg or XXX lbs." on yourvehicle’s Tire and Loading Information plac-ard.
XStep 2:Determine the combined weight ofthe driver and passengers that will be ridingin your vehicle.
XStep 3:Subtract the combined weight ofthe driver and passengers from XXX kilo-grams or XXX lbs.
XStep 4:The resulting figure equals the avail-able amount of cargo and luggage loadcapacity. For example, if the "XXX" amountequals 1400 lbs and there will be five 150-lbpassengers in your vehicle, the amount of

available cargo and luggage load capacity is650 lbs (1400 - 750 (5 x 150) = 650 lbs).
XStep 5:Determine the combined weight ofluggage and cargo being loaded on the vehi-cle. That weight may not safely exceed theavailable cargo and luggage load capacitycalculated in step 4.

The following table shows examples on how tocalculate total and cargo load capacities withvarying seating configurations and number andsize of occupants. Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR):the maxi-mum permissible weight that can be carried byone axle (front or rear axle).

Standards
Uniform Tire Quality Grading Standards areU.S. government specifications. Their purposeis to provide drivers with uniform reliable infor-mation on tire performance data. Tire manu-facturers have to grade tires using three per-formance factors:Ctread wear grade,Dtraction grade and

wall of the tire. You will find this after the let-ter that identifies the speed rating(Ypage 307).

RXL or Extra Load: represents a reinforcedtire
RLight Load: represents a light load tire
RC, D, E: represents a load range thatdepends on the maximum load that the tirecan carry at a certain pressure

Maximum load rating
Maximum tire loadCis the maximum permis-sible weight for which the tire is approved.
Do not overload the tires by exceeding thespecified load limit. The maximum permissibleload can be found on the vehicle's Tire andLoading Information placard on the B-pillar onthe driver's side (Ypage 303).

DOT, Tire Identification Number (TIN)
US tire regulations stipulate that every tiremanufacturer or retreader must imprint a TINin or on the sidewall of each tire produced.
The TIN is a unique identification number. TheTIN enables the tire manufacturers or retread-ers to inform purchasers of recalls and othersafety-relevant matters. It makes it possiblefor the purchaser to easily identify the affectedtires.

Definition of terms for tires and load-
ing
Tire ply composition and material used
Describes the number of plies or the numberof layers of rubber-coated fabric in the tiretread and sidewall. These are made of steel,nylon, polyester and other materials.
Bar
Metric unit for tire pressure. 14.5038 poundsper square inch (psi) and 100 kilopascals (kPa)are the equivalent of 1 bar.
DOT (Department of Transportation)
DOT-marked tires fulfill the requirements ofthe U S Department of Transportation.
Normal occupant weight
The number of occupants for which the vehicleis designed multiplied by 68 kilograms(150 lbs).
Uniform Tire Quality Grading Standards
A uniform standard to grade the quality of tireswith regards to tread quality, tire traction andtemperature characteristics. The quality grad-ing assessment is made by the manufacturerfollowing specifications from the U.S. govern-ment. The ratings are molded into the sidewallof the tire.
Recommended tire pressures
The recommended tire pressure applies to thetires mounted at the factory.
The Tire and Loading Information placard con-tains the recommended tire pressures for coldtires on a fully loaded vehicle and for the maxi-mum permissible vehicle speed.
The tire pressure table contains the recom-mended pressures for cold tires for variousoperating conditions, i.e. differing load andspeed conditions.
Increased vehicle weight due to optional
equipment
The combined weight of all standard andoptional equipment available for the vehicle,regardless of whether it is actually installed onthe vehicle or not.
Rim
This is the part of the wheel on which the tireis mounted.
GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating)
The GAWR is the maximum gross axle weightrating. The actual load on an axle must neverexceed the gross axle weight rating. The grossaxle weight rating can be found on the vehicleidentification plate on the B-pillar on the driv-er's side.
Speed rating
The speed rating is part of the tire identifica-tion. It specifies the speed range for which thetire is approved.
GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight)
The gross vehicle weight includes the weightof the vehicle including fuel, tools, the sparewheel, accessories installed, occupants, lug-gage and the drawbar noseweight, if applica-ble. The gross vehicle weight must not exceedthe gross vehicle weight rating GVWR as speci-fied on the vehicle identification plate on theB-pillar on the driver's side.
GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)
The GVWR is the maximum permissible grossweight of a fully loaded vehicle (the weight ofthe vehicle including all accessories, occu-pants, fuel, luggage and the drawbar nose-weight, if applicable). The gross vehicle weightrating is specified on the vehicle identificationplate on the B-pillar on the driver's side.

Maximum loaded vehicle weight
The maximum weight is the sum of:
Rthe curb weight of the vehicle
Rthe weight of the accessories
Rthe load limit
Rthe weight of the factory installed optionalequipment
Kilopascal (kPa)
Metric unit for tire pressure. 6.9 kPa corre-sponds to 1 psi. Another unit for tire pressureis bar. 100 kilopascals (kPa) are the equivalentof 1 bar.
Load index
In addition to the load-bearing index, the loadindex may also be imprinted on the sidewall ofthe tire. This specifies the load-bearing capa-city more precisely.
Curb weight
The weight of a vehicle with standard equip-ment including the maximum capacity of fuel,oil and coolant. It also includes the air-condi-tioning system and optional equipment if theseare installed in the vehicle, but does notinclude passengers or luggage.
Maximum load rating
The maximum load rating is the maximum per-missible weight in kilograms or lbs for which atire is approved.
Maximum permissible tire pressure
Maximum permissible tire pressure for onetire.
Maximum load on one tire
Maximum load on one tire. This is calculatedby dividing the maximum axle load of one axleby two.
PSI (pounds per square inch)
A standard unit of measure for tire pressure.
Aspect ratio
Relationship between tire height and tire widthin percent.
Tire pressure
This is pressure inside the tire applying an out-ward force to each square inch of the tire'ssurface. The tire pressure is specified in
pounds per square inch (psi), in kilopascal(kPa) or in bar. The tire pressure should onlybe corrected when the tires are cold.
Cold tire pressure
The tires are cold:
Rif the vehicle has been parked with the tiresout of direct sunlight for at least three hoursand
Rif the vehicle has not been driven furtherthan 1 mile (1.6 km)
Tread
The part of the tire that comes into contactwith the road.
Bead
The tire bead ensures that the tire sitssecurely on the wheel. There are several steelwires in the bead to prevent the tire from com-ing loose from the wheel rim.
Sidewall
The part of the tire between the tread and thebead.
Weight of optional extras
The combined weight of those optional extrasthat weigh more than the replaced standardparts and more than 2.3 kg (5 lbs). Theseoptional extras, such as high-performancebrakes, level control, a roof rack or a high-per-formance battery, are not included in the curbweight and the weight of the accessories.
TIN (Tire Identification Number)
This is a unique identifier which can be usedby a tire manufacturer to identify tires, forexample for a product recall, and thus identifythe purchasers. The TIN is made up of themanufacturer's identity code, tire size, tiretype code and the manufacturing date.
Load bearing index
The load bearing index (also load index) is acode that contains the maximum load bearingcapacity of a tire.
Traction
Traction is the result of friction between thetires and the road surface.
