SmartKey must be in the vehicle. This mode for
starting the engine operates independently of
the ECO start/stop automatic engine start func-

Pulling away
General notes
G WARNING
If the engine spee disa bove the idling speed
and you engage transmission position D or R ,

When engaging transmission position D or R ,
alway sf irmly depress the brake peda la nd do
not simultaneously accelerate. ! Change gea ring ood time and avoi ds pin-
ning the wheels. You could otherwise damage
the vehicle.
Depress the accelerator carefully when pulling
away.
The vehicl el ocks centrally once you have pulled
away. The locking knobs in the doors drop down.
You can open the doors from the insid eata ny
time.
You can als od eactivate the automatic locking
feature ( Y
pag e1 73).
It is only possible to shift the transmission from
position P to the desired position if you depress
the brake pedal. Only then is the shift lock
released.
i Upshifts take place at highe re ngine speeds
after ac old start. This help st he catalytic con-
verter to reach its operating temperature
more quickly.

Hill start assist Hill start assist help sy ou when pulling awa yf or-
ward sorinr everse on an uphill gradient. It holds
the vehicl ef or as hort time after you have
removed you rf oot from the brake pedal. This
gives you enoug ht ime to move you rf oot from
the brake peda ltot he accelerator peda la nd to
depress it before the vehicl eb egins to roll.
G WARNING
After as hort time, hill start assist wil lnol on-
ger brake you rv ehicl ea nd it could roll away.
There is ar isk of an accident and injury.
Therefore, quickly move you rf oot from the
brake peda ltot he accelerator pedal. Never
leave the vehicl ew hen it is held by hill start
assist.
Hill start assist is not active if: R
you are pulling awa yonal evel road or on a
downhill gradient. R

Introduction The ECO start/sto pf unction switches the
engine off automaticall yift he vehicle is stopped

consumptio na nd emission sofy our vehicle.

If th ee ngine is switched off automaticall ya nd

automatically. The vehicle may begin moving.

ECO start/sto pd isplay
The ECO start/sto pf unction is activated when-
ever you switch on th ee ngine usin gt he Smart-
Key or th eS ta rt/Sto pb utton.
If th ee ngine has been switched off automati-
cally by th eE CO start/sto pf unction ,t he

Avoid heavy loads on the engine as you do so, e.g. driving in moun-
tainou st errai na nd stop-and-go traffic.
DYNAMIC SELEC Tb uttonUse the DYNAMIC SELECT button to change the
drive program. Depending on the drive program
selected the following vehicle characteristics

Each time you start the engine with the Smart-
Key or the Start/Stop button, drive program C is
activated. For further information about starting
the engine, see ( Y
pag e1 16).

Press DYNAMIC SELECT button C as many
times as necessary until the desired drive
progra miss elected.
The selected drive progra ma ppears in the
multifunction display. After as hort time the displa yg oes out and the status icon of the
selected drive progra ma ppears.
In addition, the current drive progra ms ettings
are displayed briefly in the multimedi as ystem
display.
i In af ew countries, the ECO start/stop func-
tion is deactivated at the factory due to the
available fuel grade. In this case, the ECO
start/stop function is not available in any
drive program, regardless of the displa yint he
multimedi as ystem display.

Refueling
Important safety notes
G WARNING
Fuel is highly flammable. If you handle fuel
incorrectly, there is ar isk of fire and explo-
sion.
You must avoid fire, open flames, creating
sparks and smoking. Switch off the engine
and, if applicable, the auxiliary heating before
refueling.
G WARNING
Fuel is poisonous and hazardous to health.
There is ar isk of injury.
You must make sure that fuel does not come
into contact with your skin, eyes or clothing
and that it is not swallowed. Do not inhale fuel
vapors. Keep fuel away from children.
If you or others come into contact with fuel,
observe the following: R
Wash away fuel from skin immediately
using soap and water. R
If fuel comes into contact with your eyes,
immediately rinse them thoroughly with clean water. Seek medical assistance with-
out delay. R
If fuel is swallowed, seek medical assis-
tance without delay .Don ot induce vomit-
ing. R
Immediately change out of clothing which
has come into contact with fuel.
G WARNING
Electrostatic buildu pc an create sparks and
ignite fuel vapors. There is ar isk of fire and
explosion.
Always touch the vehicle body before opening
the fuel filler flap or touching the fuel pump
nozzle. Any existing electrostatic buildu pi s
thereby discharged.
Do not get into the vehicle again during the refu-
eling process. Otherwise, electrostatic charge
could build up again.
! Do not use diesel to refuel vehicles with a
gasoline engine. Do not switch on the ignition
if you accidentally refuel with the wrong fuel.
Otherwise, the fuel will enter the fuel system.
Even small amounts of the wrong fuel could
result in damage to the fuel system and the
engine. Notify aq ualified specialist workshop
and have the fuel tank and fuel lines drained

Park the vehicle so that no flammable mate-
rials come into contact with parts of the vehi-
cle which are hot. Take particular care not to
park on dry grassland or harvested grain
fields.
G WARNING
If you leave children unsupervised in the vehi-
cle, they could set it in motion by, for example: R
release the parking brake. R
shift the automatic transmission out of the
parking position P .R
start the engine.
In addition, they may operate vehicle equip-
ment and become trapped. There is ar isk of
an accident and injury. When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children unsupervised in the vehicle.
! Always secure the vehicle correctly against
rolling away .O therwise, the vehicle or its driv-
etrain could be damaged.
To ensure that the vehicle is secured against
rolling away unintentionally: R

boosting effect. You wil lr equire considerably
more effort to steer and brake. There is ar isk

Do not switch off the ignition while driving.
G WARNING
If you operate mobile communication equip-
ment while driving, you wil lbed istracted from
traffic conditions. You coul da ls ol ose control
of the vehicle. There is ar isk of an accident.
Only operate this equipment when the vehicle
is stationary.
Observe the lega lr equirements for the country
in which you are driving. Some jurisdictions pro-
hibi tt he drive rf rom using am obile phone while
driving av ehicle.
If you make ac all while driving, alway su se
hands-free mode. Only operate the telephone
when the traffic situation permits. If you are
unsure, pul lo ver to as afe location and stop
before operating the telephone.
Bear in mind that at as pee dofo nly 30 mph
(approximately 50 km/h) ,t he vehicl ec overs a
distance of 44 ft (approximately 14 m) per sec-
ond.

The tires should always be inflated to the rec-
ommended tire pressure. R
Remove unnecessary loads. R
Warm up the engin eatl ow engin es peeds.R
Avoid frequen ta cceleration or braking.R
Observe the servic ei ntervals in the Mainte-
nanc eB ooklet or in the servic ei nterval dis-
play. Have all the maintenanc ew ork carried in
accordance with Daimler AG regulations.
Fuel consumption also increases when driving in
cold weather, in stop-start traffic and in hilly ter-
rain.
Drinking and driving
G WARNING
Drinkin ga nd driving and/or takin gd rugs and
driving are very dangerous combinations. Even as mall amount of alcohol or drugs can
affect your reflexes, perceptions and judg-
ment.
The possibility of as erious or even fatal acci-
dent is greatly increased when you drink or
take drugs and drive.
Do not drink or take drugs and drive or allow
anyone to drive who has been drinking or tak-
ing drugs.
Emission control
G WARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. Inhaling
these exhaust gases leads to poisoning. There
is ar isk of fatal injury. Therefor en ever leave
the engin er unning in enclosed spaces with-
out sufficien tv entilation.
Certain engin es ystems are designed to keep
the level of poisonous component sine xhaust
fumes within legal limits.
These systems only work at peak efficiency if
they are serviced exactly in accordance with the
manufacturer's specifications .A lways have
work on the engin ec arried out at aq ualified
specialist workshop. Mercedes-Benz recom-
mends that you use an authorized Mercedes-
Ben zC enter for this purpose. Work relevant to
safety or work on safety-related systems in par-
ticular must be carried out at aq ualified spe-
cialist workshop.
