the SmartK ey.Remove anybulky keyrings
before insertin gthe SmartK eyinto theigni-
tion lock.
! Keep
theSmartK eyaway fromstrongmag-
netic fields. Otherwise, theremote control
funct ioncould beaffected.
Str ong magnetic fieldscanoccur inthe
vicinity ofpowerful electrical installations.

The turn signals flashonce when unlocking
and three times whenlocking.
You canalso setanaudib lesignal toconfirm
that thevehicle hasbeen locked. Theaudib le
signal canbeactivated anddeactivated using
the on-board computer (Ypage 179).
When itis dark, thesurround lightingalso
comes onifit is activated inthe on-board

button.
The Start/St opbutton mustbeinserted inthe
ignition lockandtheSmartKey mustbeinthe
vehicle .
When youinsert theStart/St opbutton into
the ignition lock,thesystem needsapprox-
imatel ytwo seconds recognition time.Youcan
then usetheStart/St opbutton.
Pressing theStart/St opbutton several times
in successio ncorresponds tothe different keypositio
nsinthe ignition lock.Thisisonly the
case ifyou arenot depres singthebrake pedal.
If you depres sthe brake pedaland press the
Start/St opbutton, theengine startsimmedi -
ately .
Ac heck which periodicallyestabl ishes aradi o
connection betweenthe vehicle andthe
SmartKey determines whetheravalidS mart-
Key isin the vehicle .This occurs, forexample ,
when starting theengine.
To start thevehicle withoutactively usingthe
SmartKey:
R the Start/St opbutton mustbeinserted in
the ignition lock.
R the SmartKey mustbeinthe vehicle .
R the vehicle mustnotbelocked withthe
SmartKey orKEYLESS- GO(Ypage 66).
Do not keep theSmartKey:
R with electronic devices,e.g.amobilephone
or another SmartKey.
R with metall icobjects, e.g.coins ormetal
foil.
R inside metallicobjects, e.g.ametal case.
This canimpa irthe functionality ofthe KEY-
LESS- GOkey.
If you lock thevehicle withtheSmartKey's
remote controlorwith KEYLESS- GO,after a
short time:
R you willnot be abletos witch onthe ignition
with theStart/St opbutton.
R you willnot be abletos tart theengine with
the Start/St opbutton untilthevehicle is
unlocked again.
The engine canbeswitched offwhil ethe vehi-
cle isin motion bypressing andholdi ngthe
Start/St opbutton forthree seconds. This
function operatesindepe ndently ofthe ECO
start/stop automaticengine switch-off func-

and creating sparks.Switchoffthe ignition
before refueling and,ifpresent, switchoff

Fuels aretoxic andharmful tohealth. There

You must avoid fuelscoming intocontact
with skin, eyesandclothes orbeing swal-
lowed.
Do not inhale thefuel vapors. Keepchildren
away fromfuels.
Keep doors andwindows closedduringthe
refueling process. If
you orothers comeintocontactwith fuel,
observe thefollowing points:
R Immediately rinsethefuel offyour skin
with soap andwater.
R Ifyou getfuel into your eyes, immediately
rinse youreyes throughly withclean
water. Seekmedical attentionimmedi-
ately.
R Seek medical attentionimmediately iffuel
has been swallow ed.Donot induce vomit-
ing.
R Immediately changeoutofclothing which
has come intocontactwith fuel. G

Elect rostatic charging canlead tothe crea-
tion ofsparks andignite fuelvapor. Thereis
ar isk offire and explosion.
Touch themetallic bodyofthe vehicle
before youopen thefuel filler caporhandle
the pump nozzle.Any possible electrostatic
charge present willinthis way bedepleted.
Do not getinto thevehicle againduring the
refueling process.Otherwise, electrostatic
