When unlocking, the turn signals flash once.
When locking, they flash three times.
When it is dark, the surround lighting also
comes on if it is activated in the on-board
computer (Y page 193).
You can also set an audible signal to confirm
that the vehicle has been locked. The audible
signal can be activated and deactivated using
the on-board computer (Y page 194).
X To unlockc entrally:press the0010
button.
If you do not open th evehicle within
approximately 40 seconds of unlocking:
R the vehicle is locked again.
R the thef tdeterrent locking system is armed
again.
X To lock centrally: press the000Fbutton. KEYLESS-GO
Important notes on the use of KEYLESS-
GO R
Do not keep the KEYLESS-GO key together
with:
- electronic devices, e.g. a mobile phone
or another key
- metallic objects, e.g. coins or metal foil. This can affect the functionality of
KEYLESS-GO.
R Bear in mind that the engine can be started
by any of the vehicle occupants if there is
a KEYLESS-GO key in the vehicle.
Locking and unlocking centrally You can start, lock or unlock the vehicle using
KEYLESS-GO. To do this, you only need carry
the SmartKey with you. You can combine the
KEYLESS-GO functions with those of a
conventional key, e.g. using KEYLESS-GO to
unlock and pressing the
000Fbutton to lock.
When locking and unlocking using KEYLESS-
GO, the distance between the SmartKey and
the corresponding door handle must not
exceed 3 ft (1 m).
KEYLESS-GO checks whether a valid key is in
the vehicle by periodically establishing a radio
connection between the vehicle and the key.
This happens:
R when the external door handles are
touched
R when starting the engine
R while the vehicle is in motion X
To unlock the vehicle: touch the inner
surface of the door handle.
X To lock the vehicle: touch sensor
surface 0002.
X Convenience closing feature: touch
recessed sensor surface 0003for an
extended period (Y page 81). SmartKey

If you pull on the handle of the trunk lid, only
the trunk of the vehicle is unlocked.
Changing the settings of the locking
system
You can change the settings of the locking
system so that when unlocking, only the
driver's door, the lockabl estowage
compartments in the vehicle interior and the
fuel filler flap are unlocked. This is useful if
you frequently travel on your own.
X To change the setting: press and hold
down the 0010and000F buttons
simultaneously for approximately
si xs econds until the battery chec klamp
flashes twice ( Ypage 71).
i If the setting of the locking system is
changed within the signal range of the
vehicle, pressing the 000For0010 button
locks or unlocks the vehicle.
The SmartKey now functions as follows:
X To unlock the driver's door: press the
0010 button once.
X To unlock centrally: press the0010
butto ntwice.
X To lock centrally: press the000Fbutton.
The KEYLESS-GO function is changed as
follows:
X To unlock the driver's door: touch the
inner surface of the door handle on the
driver's door.
X To unlock centrally: touch the inner
surface of the front-passenger door handle.
X To lock centrally: touch the outersensor
surface on one of the door handles. Restoring the factory settings
X Press the 0010and000F buttons
simultaneously for approximately
six seconds until the battery chec klamp
flashes twice. Mechanical key
General notes If the vehicle can no longer be locked or
unlocked with the SmartKey, use the
mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the driver's door or the trunk lid, the
anti-thef talarm system will be triggered
(Y page 65).
There are several ways to tur noff the alarm:
X To turn the alarm off with the
SmartKey: press the0010or000F button
on the SmartKey.
or
X Insert the SmartKey into the ignition lock.
or
X To deactivate the alarm with KEYLESS-
GO: press the Start/Stop button in the
ignition lock. The SmartKey must be in the
vehicle.
or
X Lock or unlock the vehicle using KEYLESS-
GO. The SmartKey must be outside the
vehicle.
If you unlock the vehicle using the mechanical
key, the fuel filler fla pwill not be unlocked
automatically.
X To unlock the fuel filler flap: insert the
SmartKey in the ignition lock.

the arrow and at the same time, remove

Checking the battery X
Press the 000For0010 button.
The battery is working properly if battery
check lamp 0002lights up briefly
If battery check lamp 0002does not light up
briefly during the test, the battery is
discharged. X
Changing the battery (Y page 71)
i You can obtain the battery at a qualified
specialist workshop.
i If the SmartKey battery is checked within
the signal reception range of the vehicle,
pressing the 000For0010 button locks or
unlocks the vehicle.
Replacing the battery You require a CR 2025 3 V cell battery.

Take the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Y page 70). X
Press mechanical key 0003into the opening
in the SmartKey in the direction of the
arrow until battery tray cover 0002opens.
When doing so, do not hold cover 0002shut.
X Remove battery tray cover 0002. X
Repeatedly tap the SmartKey against your
palm until battery 0023falls out.
X Inser tthe new battery with the positive
terminal facing upwards. Use a lint-free
cloth to do so. SmartKey

Make sure that the surface of the battery is
free from lint, grease and all other forms of
contamination.
X Insert the front tabs of battery tray
cover 0002and then press to close it.
X Insert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey.
X Check the function of all SmartKey buttons

Problems with the SmartKey
Problem Possible causes/consequences and

You cannot lock or
unlock the vehicle
using the SmartKey. The SmartKey battery is discharged or nearly discharged.

Try again to lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control
function of the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the
driver's door handle from close range and press the 0010/
000F button.
If this does not work:
X Check the SmartKey battery (Y page 71) and replace it if
necessary (Y page 71).
X Lock (Y page 76) or unlock (Y page 76) the vehicle using
the mechanical key. The SmartKey is faulty.
X
Lock (Y page 76) or unlock (Y page 76) the vehicle using
the mechanical key.
X Have the SmartKey checked at a qualified specialist workshop. You can no longer lock
or unlock the vehicle
using KEYLESS-GO. There is interference from a powerful source of radio waves.
X Lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control function of
the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's door
handle from close range and press the 0010/000Fbutton. There is a malfunction with KEYLESS-GO.
X Lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control function of
the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's door
handle from close range and press the 0010/000Fbutton.
X Have KEYLESS-GO checked at a qualified specialist workshop.
If this does not work:
X Check the SmartKey battery (Y page 71) and replace it if
necessary (Y page 71).
X Lock (Y page 76) or unlock (Y page 76) the vehicle using
the mechanical key. You have lost a
SmartKey. X
Have the SmartKey deactivated at a qualified specialist
workshop.
X Report the loss immediately to the vehicle insurers.
X If necessary, have the locks changed as well. You have lost the
mechanical key. X

X Jump-start the vehicle (Y page 285).

X Consult a qualified specialist workshop. The engine cannot be
started using KEYLESS-
GO. The SmartKey is in
the vehicle. Ad
oor is open. Therefore, the SmartKey cannot be detected as
easily.
X Close the door and try to start the vehicle again. There is interference from a powerful source of radio waves.

Start your vehicle with the SmartKey in the ignition lock. Doors

WARNING
When leaving the vehicle, always remove the
SmartKey from the ignition lock. Always take
the SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle.
Do not leave children unsupervised in the
vehicle, even if they are secured in a child
restraint system, and do not give them access
to an unlocked vehicle. Achild's unsupervised
access to a vehicle could result in an accident
and/or serious personal injury. They could:
R injure themselves on vehicle parts
R be seriously or fatally injured by extreme
heat or cold
R injure themselves or have an accident with
vehicle equipment that may still be in
operation even after the SmartKey has
been removed from the ignition, such as the
seat adjustment, steering wheel
adjustment or memory function. If children open a door, they could cause
severe or even fatal injury to other persons; if
they get out of the vehicle, they could injure
themselves when doing so or be seriously or
even fatally injured by any passing traffic.
Do not expose the child restraint system to
direct sunlight. The child restraint system's
metal parts, for example, could become very
hot, and a child could be burned on these
parts. G
WARNING
Do not carry heavy or hard objects in the
passenger compartmentu nless they are
firmly secured in place.
Unsecured or improperly positioned cargo
increases a child's risk of injury in the event
of:
R strong braking maneuvers
R sudden changes of direction
R an accident 74

Unlocking and opening doors from
the inside
You can open a door from inside the vehicle
even if it has been locked.
Only open the door when the traffic situation
permits.
If the vehicle was previously locked with the
SmartKey or with KEYLESS-GO, opening the
vehicle from the inside will activate the anti-
theft alarm system. Switch off the alarm
(Y page 65). X
Pull door handle 0003.
If the door is locked, locking knob 0002pops
up. The door is unlocked and can be
opened.
i When a door is opened, the side window
on that side opens slightly. When the door
is closed, the side window closes again.
! The side windows will not open/close if
the battery is discharged or if the side
windows have iced up. It will then not be
possible to close the door. Do not attempt
to force the door closed. You could
otherwise damage the door or the side
window. Centrally locking and unlocking the
vehicle from the inside
You can centrally lock or unlock the vehicle
from the inside.
The central locking/unlocking button does
not lock or unlock the fuel filler flap or the stowage compartments, such as the glove
box.
i
You cannot unlock the vehicle centrally
from the inside if the vehicle has been
locked with the SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO. X
To unlock: press button 0002.
X To lock: press button 0003.
If all the doors are closed, the vehicle locks.
You can open a door from inside the vehicle
even if it has been locked. Only open the door
when the traffic situation permits.
If the vehicle has been locked with the central
locking button:
R and the SmartKey is set to its factory
setting, the entire vehicle is unlocked if a
door is opened from the inside
R and the SmartKey is set to an individual
setting, only the door that is opened from
inside the vehicle is unlocked. Automatic locking feature
When the ignition is switched on and the
wheels of the vehicle are turning at a speed
of more than 9 mph (15 km/h), the vehicle
locks automatically.
You could therefore be locked out when:
R the vehicle is being pushed.
R the vehicle is being towed.
R the vehicle is being tested on a
dynamometer. Doors

To deactivate: press and hold button 0002
for abou tfive seconds until a tone sounds.
X To activate: press and hold button 0003for
about five seconds until a tone sounds.
i If you press one of the two buttons and
do not hear a tone, the relevant setting has
already been selected.
You can also switch the automatic locking
function on and off using the on-board
computer (Y page 193). Unlocking the driver's door
(mechanical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be unlocked with
the SmartKey, use the mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unloc kand
open the driver's door, the anti-thef talarm
system will be triggered ( Ypage 65).
X Take the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Y page 70).
X Insert the mechanical key into the lock of
the driver's door as far as it will go. X
Turn the mechanical key counter-clockwise
to position 0005.
The door is unlocked.
X Turn the mechanical key back and remove
it.
X Insert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey. Locking the vehicle (mechanical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be locked with the
SmartKey, use the mechanical key.
X Open the driver's door.
X Close the front-passenger door and the
trunk lid.
X Press the locking button (Y page 75).
X Check whether the locking knob on the
front-passenger door is still visible. Press
down the locking knob by hand, if
necessary.
X Close the driver's door.
X Take the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Y page 70).
X Insert the mechanical key into the lock of
the driver's door as far as it will go. X
Turn the mechanical key clockwise as far
as it will go to position 0005.
X Turn the mechanical key back and remove
it.
X Make sure that the doors and the trunk lid
are locked.
X Insert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey. 76

If you lock the vehicle as described above,
the fuel filler flap is not locked. The anti-
theft alarm system is not armed. Trunk

other dangers, deadly carbon monoxide (CO)
gases may enter the vehicle interior resulting
in unconsciousness and death.
! The trunk lid swings upwards when
opened .Therefore, make sure that there is
sufficient clearance above the trunk lid.
To open the trunk lid completely, a minimum
clearance of 5.90 ft (1.80 m) above the
ground is necessary.
The trunk lid can be:
R opened and closed manually from outside
R opened automatically from outside
R locked separately
R unlocked with the mechanical key
R opened with the emergency release button Opening and closing manually
Opening You can only unlock the trunk lid when the
vehicle is stationary and the roof is fully
opened or closed.

X If necessary, lock the vehicle with
the 000F button on the SmartKey
(Y page 68) or with KEYLESS-GO
(Y page 69).
i If a KEYLESS-GO key is detected in the
trunk, the trunk lid cannot be locked and
then opens again. Opening automatically from the
outside
