If you pull on the handle of the trunk lid, only
the trunk of the vehicle is unlocked.
Changing the settings of the locking
system
You can change the settings of the locking
system so that when unlocking, only the
driver's door, the lockabl estowage
compartments in the vehicle interior and the
fuel filler flap are unlocked. This is useful if
you frequently travel on your own.
X To change the setting: press and hold
down the 0010and000F buttons
simultaneously for approximately
si xs econds until the battery chec klamp
flashes twice ( Ypage 71).
i If the setting of the locking system is
changed within the signal range of the
vehicle, pressing the 000For0010 button
locks or unlocks the vehicle.
The SmartKey now functions as follows:
X To unlock the driver's door: press the
0010 button once.
X To unlock centrally: press the0010
butto ntwice.
X To lock centrally: press the000Fbutton.
The KEYLESS-GO function is changed as
follows:
X To unlock the driver's door: touch the
inner surface of the door handle on the
driver's door.
X To unlock centrally: touch the inner
surface of the front-passenger door handle.
X To lock centrally: touch the outersensor
surface on one of the door handles. Restoring the factory settings
X Press the 0010and000F buttons
simultaneously for approximately
six seconds until the battery chec klamp
flashes twice. Mechanical key
General notes If the vehicle can no longer be locked or
unlocked with the SmartKey, use the
mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the driver's door or the trunk lid, the
anti-thef talarm system will be triggered
(Y page 65).
There are several ways to tur noff the alarm:
X To turn the alarm off with the
SmartKey: press the0010or000F button
on the SmartKey.
or
X Insert the SmartKey into the ignition lock.
or
X To deactivate the alarm with KEYLESS-
GO: press the Start/Stop button in the
ignition lock. The SmartKey must be in the
vehicle.
or
X Lock or unlock the vehicle using KEYLESS-
GO. The SmartKey must be outside the
vehicle.
If you unlock the vehicle using the mechanical
key, the fuel filler fla pwill not be unlocked
automatically.
X To unlock the fuel filler flap: insert the
SmartKey in the ignition lock.

Make sure that the surface of the battery is
free from lint, grease and all other forms of
contamination.
X Insert the front tabs of battery tray
cover 0002and then press to close it.
X Insert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey.
X Check the function of all SmartKey buttons
on the vehicle. 72

To deactivate: press and hold button 0002
for abou tfive seconds until a tone sounds.
X To activate: press and hold button 0003for
about five seconds until a tone sounds.
i If you press one of the two buttons and
do not hear a tone, the relevant setting has
already been selected.
You can also switch the automatic locking
function on and off using the on-board
computer (Y page 193). Unlocking the driver's door
(mechanical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be unlocked with
the SmartKey, use the mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unloc kand
open the driver's door, the anti-thef talarm
system will be triggered ( Ypage 65).
X Take the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Y page 70).
X Insert the mechanical key into the lock of
the driver's door as far as it will go. X
Turn the mechanical key counter-clockwise
to position 0005.
The door is unlocked.
X Turn the mechanical key back and remove
it.
X Insert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey. Locking the vehicle (mechanical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be locked with the
SmartKey, use the mechanical key.
X Open the driver's door.
X Close the front-passenger door and the
trunk lid.
X Press the locking button (Y page 75).
X Check whether the locking knob on the
front-passenger door is still visible. Press
down the locking knob by hand, if
necessary.
X Close the driver's door.
X Take the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Y page 70).
X Insert the mechanical key into the lock of
the driver's door as far as it will go. X
Turn the mechanical key clockwise as far
as it will go to position 0005.
X Turn the mechanical key back and remove
it.
X Make sure that the doors and the trunk lid
are locked.
X Insert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey. 76

X The following conditions must be fulfilled
for installation:
R unlocking buttons Rand Lpoint in the
direction of travel.
R latch 0023facing you is unlocked.
R latch 0003facing away from you is locked.
X To unlock the latch: press unlocking
button Ror Lon the locked latch.
X To lock th elatch: push the unlocked latch
upwards by hand until it engages.
Installing
X Stop the vehicle, paying attention to road
and traffic conditions.
X Take the wind screen out of the trunk. Installatio
nfrom the left side of the vehicle
(example)
X Prepare for installation (Y page 87).
X Hold wind screen 0002at an angle and slide
it with locked latch 0003in the direction of
arrow 0022into the bracket of the opposite
roll bar.
X Press wind screen 0002on the side of the
vehicle facing you downwards in the
directio nofarrow0020until it engages.
Make sure that studs 0021and latch 0023fit
into the respective brackets.
X Check whethe rwind screen 0002is fully
inserted into all four brackets and is sitting
securely.
X If this is not the case, remove wind
screen 0002again and repeat the steps
above.
Removing
X Stop the vehicle, paying attention to road

WARNING
Do not activate the memory function while
driving. Activating the memory function while
driving could cause the driver to lose control
of the vehicle. X
Adjust the seat (Y page 94).
X On the driver's side, adjust the steering
wheel (Y page 97) and the exterior mirrors
(Y page 98).
X Press memory button Mand one of the
storage position buttons 1,2or 3within
three seconds.
The settings are stored in the selected
preset position. Atone sounds when the
settings have been completed. Calling up

X Press and hold the relevant storage
position button 1,2or 3until the seat,
steering wheel and exterio rmirrors are in
the stored position.
i The setting procedure is interrupted as
soon as you release the storage position

climate control
The following contains instructions and
recommendations to enable you to get the
most out of your automatic climate control.
R Activate climate control using the 0005and
0006 buttons 8
/0004 9
.T he indicator lamps
in the 0005and0006/0004 buttons light
up.
R Set the temperature to 72 ‡ (22 †). R
Only use the "defrosting" function briefly
until the windshield is clear again.
R Only use "air-recirculation" mode briefly,
e.g. if there are unpleasant outside odors
or when in a tunnel. The windows could
otherwise fog up as in air-recirculation
mode no fresh air is drawn into the vehicle.
R Use the ZONE function to adopt the
temperature settings on the driver's side
for the front-passenger side and the rear

ignition lock.
X Press one or more of the 0019,0018,
0007 buttons.
The corresponding indicator lamp lights up
briefly.
Dual-zone automatic climate control X
Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock.
X Press the 0015button repeatedly until the
desired symbol appears in the display. Setting the airflow
Air-conditioning system X
Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock.
X To increase/reduce: turn thumbwheel
0014 clockwise or counter-clockwise
(Y page 117).
Dual-zone automatic climate control X
Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock.
X To increase/reduce: press the0017or
0016 button. Switching the ZONE function on/off
This function is only available with automatic
climate control.
X To switch on: press the0003button.
The indicator lamp in the 0003button lights
up.
The temperature setting for the driver's
side is not adopted for the front-passenger
side.

When the buttons or controls for
temperature, airflow or air distribution are
activated, the temperature setting for the
driver's side is not adopted for the other
climate control zones.
X
To switch off: press the0003button.
The indicato rlamp in the 0003buttongoes
out.
The temperature setting for the driver's
side is adopted for the front-passenger
side. Defrosting the windshield
You can use this function to defrost the
windshield or to defrost the inside of the
windshield and the side windows.
i You should only select the defrosting
function until the windshield is clear again.
X Turn the SmartKey to position 2in the
ignition lock.
X To activate: press the0008button.
The indicator lamp in the 0008button lights
up.
The climate control system switches to the
following functions:
R cooling with air dehumidification on
R high airflow 11
R high temperature 11
R air distribution to the windshield and
front side windows
R air-recirculation mode off
X To switch off: press the0008button.
The indicator lamp in the 0008button goes
out. The previously selected settings come
into effect again. The cooling with air dehumidification function remains on. Air-
recirculation mode remains deactivated.
or
X Press the 0005button 12
.
The indicator lamp in the 0008button goes
out. Airflow and air distribution are set to
automatic mode. MAX COOL maximum cooling
The MAX COOL function is only available in
vehicles for the USA.
MAX COOL is only operational when the
engine is running.
When you activate MAX COOL, climate
control switches to the following functions:
R maximum cooling
R maximum airflow
R air-recirculation mode on
X To activate: press the0001button.
The indicator lamp in the button lights up.
X To deactivate: press the0001button
again.
The indicator lamp goes out. The previously
selected settings come into effect again. Rear window defroster
Activating/deactivating G
WARNING
Any accumulation of snow and ice should be
removed from the rear window before driving.
Visibility could otherwise be impaired,
endangering you and others.
The rear window defroster has a high current
draw. You should therefore switch it off as
soon as the window is clear. Otherwise, the
rear window defroster switches off
automatically after several minutes.
