Protection of the environment
H
Environmental note
Daimler's declared policy is one of integrated
environmental protection.
The objectives are for the natural resources
which form the basis of our existence on this
planet to be used sparingly and in a manner
which takes the requirements of both nature
and humanity into account.
You too can help to protect the environment
by operating your vehicle in an environmen-
tally-responsible manner.
Fuel consumption and the rate of engine,
transmission, brake and tyre wear depend on
the following factors:
R operating conditions of your vehicle
R your personal driving style
You can influence both factors.
You should bear the following in mind:
Operating conditions
R avoid short trips as these increase fuel con-
sumption.
R make sure that the tyre pressures are
always correct.
R do not carry any unnecessary weight.
R keep an eye on the vehicle's fuel consump-
tion.
R a regularly serviced vehicle will contribute
to environmental protection. You should
therefore adhere to the service intervals.
R always have maintenance work carried out
at a qualified specialist workshop, e.g. a
Mercedes-Benz Service Centre.
Personal driving style
R do not depress the accelerator pedal when
starting the engine.
R do not warm up the engine with the vehicle
stationary.
R drive carefully and maintain a safe distance
from the vehicle in front.
R avoid frequent, sudden acceleration. R
change gear in good time and use each gear
only up to 2
/ 3 of its maximum engine
speed.
R switch off the engine in stationary traffic. Returning used vehicles
Mercedes-Benz will take back your
Mercedes-Benz to dispose of it in an environ-
mentally-responsible manner, in accordance
with the European Union (EU) End of Life
Vehicles Directive.
The End of Life Vehicles Directive applies to
vehicles of up to 3.5 tgross vehicle weight, in
accordance with national regulations. For
several years, Mercedes-Benz has been
meeting all the legal requirements for a
design which allows for recycling and re-use.
There is a network of return points and dis-
assembly plants which can recycle yourv ehi-
cle in an environmentally-responsible man-
ner. The options for recycling vehicles and
parts are constantly being developed and
improved. This means that your Mercedes-
Benz will also continue to meet even the
increased recycling quotas in the future in
good time. You can obtain further information
from your national Mercedes-Benzh omepage
or your national hotline number. Operating safety
Safety notes

Risk of accident and injury
Always have work on the vehicle carried out
by a qualified specialist workshop. In particu-
lar, work relevant to safety or on safety-rela-
ted systems as well as maintenance work
must be carried out at aqualified specialist
workshop. The workshop must have the nec-
essary specialist knowledge and tools to carry
out the work required. Mercedes-Benz rec-
ommends that you use a Mercedes-Benz
Service Centre for this purpose. 18

brakes are applied again, the brake lamps
light up continuously. The hazard warning
lamps switch off automatically if you travel
faster than 10 km/ h.You can also switch off
the hazard warning lamps using the hazard
warning switch button (Y page 216).ESP
®
(Electronic Stability Program)
You can selec tbetween the three following
states of ESP ®
:
R ESP ®
is activated.
R ESP ®
Sport is activated.
R ESP ®
is deactivated.
ESP ®
is activated as soon as you start the
engine. When ESP ®
Sport is activated, the
0005 warning lamp lights up in the instrument
panel. When ESP ®
is deactivated, the 0001
and 0002 warning lamps light up in the instru-
ment panel.
Characteristics of ESP ®ESP
®
monitors driving stability and traction,
i.e. power transmission between the tyres
and the road surface.
If ESP ®
detects that the vehicle is deviating
from the direction desired by the driver, one
or more wheels are braked to stabilise the
vehicle. If necessary, the engine output is also
modified to keep the vehicle on the desired
course within physical limits. ESP ®
assists
the driver when pulling away on wet or slip-
pery roads. ESP ®
can also stabilise the vehi-
cle during braking.
When ESP ®
intervenes, the 0002warning
lamp flashes in the instrument panel. G
Risk of accident
If the 0002 warning lamp in the instrument
cluster flashes, proceed as follows: R
do not deactivate ESP ®
under any circum-
stances
R only depress the accelerator pedal as far as
necessary when pulling away
R adapt your driving style to suit the prevail-
ing road and weather conditions
Otherwise, the vehicle could go into a skid.
ESP ®
cannot reduce the risk of an acciden tif
you drive too fast. ESP ®
cannot override the
laws of physics.
i Only use wheels with the recommended
tyre sizes. Only then will ESP ®
function
properly.
ESP ®
is activated automatically when the
engine is running .Inthe following situations,
it may be better to activate ESP ®
Sport or
deactivate ESP ®
:
R when using snow chains
R in deep snow
R on sand or gravel G
Risk of accident
Activate ESP ®
as soon as the situations
described above no longer apply.O therwise,
ESP ®
will only be able to stabilise the vehicle
to a limited degree if the vehicle starts to skid
or if a wheel starts to spin.
Characteristics of ESP ®
Sport ESP
®
Sport raises the interventio nthreshold
for stabilising the vehicle. This allows for a
sportier driving style on designated race cir-
cuits and may in certain situations improve
the traction in comparison with ESP ®
.
If you activate ESP ®
Sport:
R ESP ®
only improves driving stability to a
limited degree.
R engine torque is only restricted to a limited
degree and the drive wheels are able to
spin. The spinning wheels produce a cut-
ting effect for better traction. Driving safety systems

General information about Bluetooth ®i
Bluetooth ®
-capable devices must corre-

device
has its own specific Bluetooth ®

Bluetooth ®
technology is the standard for
short-range wireless data transmission of up
to approximately 10 metres. Bluetooth ®
can
be used to exchange vCards, for example.

Connecting Bluetooth ®
devices i
To connect a Bluetooth ®
device, the Blue-
tooth ®
function must be activated in
COMAND and in the device concerned. The
Bluetooth ®
device must also be "visible" to
COMAND in order for COMAND to find and
display it. For the setting procedures,
please see the operating instructions for
the Bluetooth ®
device.
It is possible to establish a Bluetooth ®
con-
nection between COMAND and the following
types of device:
R mobile phone
R notebook
R laptop/PDA
i Bluetooth ®
-capable mobile phones must
correspond to particular profiles to be con-
nected to COMAND (Y page 129).
The volume of telephone conversations can
change after the phone has been connec-
ted.
You can connect up to ten devices to
COMAND.
The connection process includes searching
for the device and its subsequent authorisa-
tion. System settings

(Y page 132).
Switching telephony type when switch-
ing on COMAND's standard behaviour after being
switched on is as follows:
Bracket* for the mobile phone is inserted
COMAND starts convenience telephony*. If
no mobile phone is inserted in the mobile
phone bracket*, the following message
appears: Telephone not inserted. If there
is a mobile phone in the bracket*, the PIN
query (Y page 133) or the telephone basic menu for convenience telephony*
(Y

Bracket* for the mobile phone is not inser-
ted.
COMAND starts telephony via the Blue-

interface and searches for the last two
mobile phones to have been connected via
the Bluetooth ®
interface. If one of the two
mobile phones is found, the telephone basic
menu for Bluetooth ®
telephony
(Y page 132) appears. If neither of the two
mobile phones is found, the Ready for

remains on the display. You now have to con-
nect yourm obile phone (Y page 129).

next time COMAND is switched off if you
do not connect a different mobile phone via
the phone list. During the connection, only
