Take care that the positive clamp con-
nected toa battery does not come into
contact with vehicle parts. #
Never place me tal objects or tools on a
batter y. #
When connecting and disconnecting the
batter y,alw ays obser vethe sequence of
battery clamps described. #
Take care toonly connect battery term i-
nals of identical polarity when receiving
starting assistance. #
Obser vethe sequence described for con-
necting and disconnecting the jump
leads when receiving starting assistance. #
Do not connect or disconnect the battery
te rm inals while the engine is running. &

ARNI NGDanger of chemical burns from
th e battery acid
Battery acid is caustic. #
Avoid contact with the skin, eyes or
clo thing. #
Do not lean overth e batter y. #
Do not inhale battery gases. #
Keep children away from the batter y. #
Immediately rinse bat tery acid o. thor-
oughly with plenty of clean water and
seek medical attention immediatel y.*

TE Damage toelectronic components
due towo rkcar ried out incor rectly on the
battery If
th e star ter battery is disconnected before
th eke y is remo ved from the ignition loc k,elec-
tronic components or assemblies, such as the
alternator, can be damaged. #
Switch o. theve hicle and remo vethe
ke y from the ignition loc k. #
Check tosee that there are no indicator
lamps lit in the inst rument cluster. #
Always disconnect the negative clamp
/rst and then the positive clamp. #
Do not inter change the battery clamps. Alw
ays ha veworkon the battery car ried out at a
qu ali/ed specialist workshop. If, in
exceptional circums tances, you must discon-
nect the battery yourself, pay attention tothefo l-
lowing:
R Obser vethe no tes on the 12 V battery
(/ page 238).
R Secure theve hicle toprev ent it from rolling
awa y.
R ATer the battery has been disconnected, the
parking brake is automatically applied. You can
th en no longer mo vetheve hicle.
R Forve hicles with an automatic transmission,
th e transmission is loc ked in position jaTer
disconnecting the batter y.Yo u can then no lon-
ge r mo vetheve hicle.
R The battery and the co ver of the positive term i-
nal clamp must be /t tedsecurely during opera-
tion. Seat base (e
xample:right-hand front seat)
The following description on connecting and /tting
th e battery uses theex ample of the star ter battery
in the seat base of theright-hand front seat. #
Switch o. all electrical consumers. #
Switch o. theve hicle and remo vetheke y from
th e ignition loc k. #
Open the front right-hand door. #
Press bo thcatch springs 1down and remo ve
co ver2 upwards from the seat base. #
Remo vecover2 bypulling upwards at an
angle from the seat base. Breakdown assistance

Secure theve hicle against rolling away. #
Consult a quali/ed specialist workshop.

here is water in the fuel /lter. The water must be drained o.. #

ARNING Risk of burns when opening the bonnet
If yo u open the bonnet in theev ent of an overheated engine or /re
in the engine compartment, thefo llowing situations may occur:
R You may come into contact with hot gases.
R You may come into contact with other escaping hot operating
0uids. #
Before opening the bonnet, allow the engine tocool down. #
Intheev ent of a /re in the engine compartment, keep the
bonnet closed and call the /re service. &

ARNING Risk of scalding from hot coolant
If yo u open the cap, you could be scalded. #
Letthe mo tor cool down before opening the cap. #
When opening the cap, wear pr otective glo ves and saf ety
glasses. #
Open the cap slo wlytorelease pressure. #
