NOTE
Fitting of a towing bar requires specialized
skills and equipment. Contact an authorized
MITSUBISHI dealer for details.
If you are going to tow a trailer, pay careful
attention to the following points.
Maximum towable weight with brake
and maximum trailer-nose weight
Never exceed the maximum towable weight
with brake and the maximum trailer-nose
weight as listed in the specifications. (Refer
to pages from 10–6 to 10–9)
If you tow a trailer at an altitude of more than
1000m above sea-level, reduce your weight
by 10% of the gross combination weight for
every increase of 1000m above sea-level,
as the engine output is lowered owing to de-
crease in atmospheric pressure.C21A015a

Operating hints
(1) Do not let the clutch slip (vehicles with a
manual transmission only) and do not
increase the engine speed more than
necessary when starting.
(2)Be sure that the driving speed does not
exceed the 100 km/h for trailer oper-
ation.
It is also recommended that you obey
the local regulations in case driving
speed with a trailer is limited to less than
100 km/h.
(3)To prevent shocks from the overrun
brake, depress the brake pedal lightly at
first and then more strongly.
(4) To make full use of engine braking,
change to a lower gear before descend-
ing a slope.
(5) The body, brakes, clutch, and chassis
will be under additional strain when tow-
ing a trailer.

Starting the engine
(Petrol-powered vehicles)
This vehicle is equipped with an electroni-
cally controlled fuel injection system which
is automatically controlled. When starting
the engine, do not depress the accelerator
pedal.
Normal conditions
The starting procedure is as follows :
1. Insert the ignition key and fasten the
seat belt.
2. Apply the parking brake.
3. Depress and hold the brake pedal.
4. Place the gearshift lever (manual
transmission) in the “N” (Neutral) or
the selector lever (automatic trans-
mission) in the “P” (PARK) position.
5. Fully depress the clutch pedal (man-
ual transmission).
6. After turning the ignition key to the
“ON” position, make certain that all
warning lamps are functioning proper-
ly before starting the engine.
7. Turn the ignition key to the “START”
position without depressing the accel-
erator pedal, and release it when the
engine starts.
NOTE
A ticking noise may be heard after starting
the engine. This is not an abnormal condi-
tion. The noise will disappear after a short
time of engine running.
If the ticking noise continues after the engine
is warmed up, have your vehicle checked at
an authorized MITSUBISHI dealer.
Flooded engine
If the engine has become flooded during
starting, first operate the starter for 5 to 6 sec-
onds while fully depressing the accelerator
pedal, then start the engine without depres-
sing the accelerator pedal.
At extreme cold ambient
temperature
If the engine won’t start, depress the accel-
erator pedal about halfway while cranking
the engine. Once the engine starts, re-
lease the accelerator pedal.
CAUTION
When starting the engine, make sure
that you press on the brake pedal. At
extreme cold ambient temperature,
move your foot to the brake pedal im-
mediately after the engine has
started.

Starting the engine
(Diesel-powered vehicles)
1. Insert the ignition key and fasten the
seat belt.
2. Apply the parking brake.
3. Depress and hold the brake pedal.
4. Place the gearshift lever in the “N”
(Neutral) position.
5. Fully depress the clutch pedal.
6. Turn the ignition key to the “ON” posi-
tion. The diesel preheat indication
lamp will first illuminate in amber, and
then after a short time go out, indicat-
ing that preheating is completed.
7. Turn the ignition key to the “START”
position without depressing the accel-
erator pedal, and release it when the
engine starts.NOTE
(1) If the engine is cold, the diesel preheat
indication lamp is on for a longer time.
(2) When the engine has not been started
within about 5 seconds after the diesel
preheat indication lamp will go out, re-
turn the ignition key to the “LOCK” posi-
tion. Then, turn the key to the “ON” posi-
tion to preheat the engine again.
(3) When the engine is warm, the diesel
preheat indication lamp does not come
on, even if the ignition key is placed in
the “ON” position.
Start the engine by turning the ignition
key right to the “START” position.

The shift pattern is shown on the gearshift
lever knob. Be sure to always fully depress
the clutch pedal before attempting to shift the
lever.
For smooth gearchanging
Depress the clutch pedal completely.
1st and 2nd gear: first move the gear
lever fully left and then forward or back
into 1st and 2nd gear.
3rd and 4th gear: move the gear lever
forward or back from neutral (N).
5th gear: first move the gear lever right
and then into 5th gear.

Type 1

Reverse gear (R) (Type 1): Lift the lock
knob (A) under the gear lever knob with
two fingers, move the gear lever to the
far left and then forward into reverse.
Reverse (R) gear (Type 2): First move
the gear level fully right and then back-
ward into reverse.
Type 2, LHD

CAUTION
(1) Do not move the gearshift lever
into reverse while the vehicle is
moving forward; doing so will
damage the transmission.
(2) Do not rest your foot on the clutch
pedal while driving as this will
cause premature clutch wear or
damage.
NOTE
(1) If it is hard to shift into 1st, depress the
clutch pedal again; the shift will then be
easier to make.
(2) To shift into reverse from 5th gear, move
the gearshift lever to the “N” position
(Neutral) and then shift it into reverse.
(Type 2)

CAUTION
(3) In the case of vehicles with a man-
ual transmission, if while driving
at the set speed, the shift lever is
set to the “N” (Neutral) position
without depressing the clutch
pedal, the engine speed will in-
crease excessively, and the en-
gine may be damaged.
NOTE
(1) When the ignition switch is switched
OFF, the main switch will also automati-
cally switch off. If you wish to maintain a
constant speed while driving, be sure
the main switch has been switched ON
again.
(2) Note that the set vehicle speed may not
be maintained on uphill or downhill
slopes.
(3) The vehicle speed may drop to less
than the set speed on a steep uphill
grade, so the accelerator must be used
if you want to maintain that speed.
(4) The vehicle speed may increase to
more than the set speed on a steep
downhill grade. When the vehicle speed
increases excessively, deactivate the
auto–speed control. (Refer to ”To
deactivate” on page 5–37.)

To increase the set speed
There are 2 ways to increase the set speed.
Auto–speed control leverPull up the auto–speed control lever. And
hold it until you reach the higer speed you
want. Release the lever when the desired
speed is reached.
To increase your speed in small amounts,
just pull up the auto–speed control lever for
less than 0.5 second and release it. Each
time you operate the lever, your vehicle will
go about 2.0 km/h faster.

AcceleratorUse the accelerator pedal to increase the ve-
hicle’s speed and, when the desired speed
is reached, pull down the auto–speed control
lever.

To deactivate
The auto–speed control can be deactivated
by the following ways.
(1) Push the main switch at the end of the
lever. (Main switch OFF)
(2) Pull the auto–speed control lever to-
ward you.
The auto–speed control can be deactivated
automatically in any of the following ways.
(3) By slightly tapping the brake pedal or
depressing it to reduce the speed.
(4) By depressing the clutch pedal (for mo-
dels with the manual transmission).
(5) By moving the selector lever to the “N”
(for models with the automatic trans-
mission).
(6) When, on a steep slope, etc., the ve-
hicle speed decreases to a speed which
is 15 km/h or more below the set speed.(7) When the vehicle speed decreases to
40 km/h or less.
WARNING
Although the auto–speed control can
be deactivated by moving the selec-
tor lever to the “N” position, never
move the selector lever to the “N”
position while driving.
A serious accident could occur; the
engine braking would be lost.

To resume set speed
If the vehicle speed remains 40 km/h or
higher when the auto–speed control is
deactivated by operating the auto–speed
control lever or by any one of the (2) to (7)
conditions noted above, the previously set
speed can be automatically resumed by pul-
ling up the auto–speed control lever.

Petrol-powered vehicle
To check the clutch fluidThe clutch fluid in the master cylinder
should be checked when performing other
underhood services. In addition, the sys-
tem should be checked for leakage at the
same time.
Check to make certain that the clutch fluid
level is always between the “MAX” and
“MIN” level markings on the fluid reservoir
and refill the fluid, if necessary.
A rapid fluid loss indicates a leak in the
clutch system which should be inspected
by your authorized MITSUBISHI dealer
and repaired immediately.
To replace the fluidRecommended brake fluid conforming to
DOT 3 or DOT 4 should be used.
The reservoir cap must be fully tightened to
avoid contamination from foreign matter or
moisture.
DO NOT ALLOW PETROLEUM-BASED
FLUID TO CONTACT, MIX WITH, OR
OTHERWISE CONTAMINATE THE
BRAKE FLUID. SEAL DAMAGE WILL RE-
SULT.
WARNING
Take care in handling brake fluid as it
is harmful to the eyes and may also
cause damage to painted surfaces.
When the fluid is spilt, wipe it up im-
mediately.
Diesel–powered vehicle
The reservoir for the clutch fluid also serves
as the reservoir for the brake fluid. Refer to
the paragraph on the “Brake fluid”.

Check the washer fluid level in the container.
If the level is low, replenish as required.
NOTE
The washer fluid container serves the wind-
screen, rear window, and headlamps (if so
equipped).
During cold weather
To ensure proper operation of the washers at
low temperatures, use a fluid containing an
anti–freezing agent.

Parking brake lever strokeEM19A–Xd
Pull the parking brake lever up to check the
number of ”clicks” that the ratchet makes.
One click represents a lever movement of
one notch. The lever should move the speci-
fied number of notches for normal brake ap-
plication.

(Parking brake adjustment when pulled
with the force of 200N)
If the parking brake lever stroke is out of the
standard range, have the brake lever ad-
justed at an authorized MITSUBISHI dealer.
