CAUTION
(2) When luggage is loaded onto the
vehicle, please make sure to drive
slowly and avoid excessive man-
euvers such as sudden braking or
quick turning.
In addition, place the luggage on
the carrier so that its weight is dis-
tributed evenly with the heaviest
items on the bottom. Do not load
items that are wider than the roof
carrier.
The additional weight on the roof
could heighten the vehicle’s centre
of gravity and affect the vehicle
handling characteristics.
As a result, driving errors or emerg-
ency maneuvers could lead to a
loss of control and result in an acci-
dent.
CAUTION
(3) Before driving and after travelling a
short distance, always check the
load to make sure it is securely fas-
tened to the roof carrier.
Check periodically during your
travel that the load remains secure.
If the load is not secure, it could fall
from the vehicle and damage your
vehicle, another vehicle or create
road hazard.
NOTE
(1) To prevent wind noise or reduction in
gas mileage, remove the roof carrier
when not in use.
(2) Before using an automatic car wash,
check with the attendant to determine if
the roof carrier should be removed.
(3) Be sure that adequate clearance is
maintained for raising the sunroof (For
vehicles with sunroof) and tailgate
(hatchback) when installing a roof
carrier.

3–point type seat belt (with
emergency locking mechanism)
This type of belt requires no length adjust-
ment. Once worn, the belt adjusts itself to the
movement of the wearer, but in the event of
a sudden or strong shock, the belt automati-
cally locks to restrain the wearer’s body.

To fastenPull the seat belt out slowly while holding the
latch plate.
NOTE
When the seat belts cannot be pulled out in
a locked condition, pull the belts once force-
fully and then return them. After that, pull the
belts out slowly once again.
Insert the latch plate into the buckle until a
”click” is heard.
CAUTION
(1) Never wear the lap portion of the
belt across your abdomen. Dur-
ing accidents it can press sharply
against your abdomen and in-
crease the risk of injury.
(2) The seat belts must not be
twisted when worn.
Pull the belt slightly to adjust looseness as
desired.

5. After confirming that the belt is locked,
grab the shoulder part of the belt near
the buckle and pull up to remove any
slack from the lap part of the belt. Re-
member, if the lap part of the belt is not
tight, the child restraint will not be se-
cure. It may help to put weight on the
child restraint or to push on the seat-
back while pulling up on the belt.
6. Before putting the child in the restraint,
push and pull the restraint in all direc-
tions to be sure it is secure. Do this be-
fore each use.
7. To deactivate the ALR mode in order
to remove a child restraint etc., after
removing the child from the restraint,
unlatch the buckle, unroute the seat
belt, let the belt fully retract and rewind
the belt.NOTE
If the seat belt does not lock, rewind it fully,
then perform step 2 to 7 again.
WARNING
(1) Before putting the child in the re-
straint, be absolutely sure to
make the conversion of the re-
tractor from the ELR mode to the
ALR mode. By doing so, the child
restraint system is always tightly
secured to the seat by the auto-
matic lock. If the conversion to
ALR is not made, the child re-
straint system could move for-
ward in the event of sudden brak-
ing or an accident, seriously in-
juring the child or other occu-
pants.
(2) If a person wearing the seat belt
moves one’s upper body signifi-
cantly such that the belt com-
pletely unwinds, the retractor
may switch to its ALR mode and
lock, thus preventing further
movement. If this happens, the
person should switch the retrac-
tor back to its ELR mode by tak-
ing off the seat belt and fully re-
winding it. The person should
then wear the seat belt again.

Installing a child restraint system
to a 3–point type seat belt (with
emergency locking mechanism)

For safety, you are advised to install the
child restraint system using a 3–point type
seat belt with emergency/automatic lock-
ing mechanism. If you cannot avoid instal-
ling it using another type of seat belt, follow
the instructions given below.
Installation:
1. Fasten the seat belt to secure the child
restraint system. Make sure you hear
a ”click” when you insert the latch plate
in the buckle.
2. 3–point type seat belts require no
length adjustment. Remove all slack
by using the locking clip.
3. Push and pull the child restraint in all
directions to be sure it is secure.

ly (once per second)]
The automatic transmission safety
device may be operating due to a mal-
function.
Have your vehicle inspected by an
authorized MITSUBISHI dealer as
soon as possible.

P - PARKThis position locks the transmission to pre-
vent the vehicle from moving. The engine
can be started in this position.
R - REVERSEMove the lever to this position only after the
vehicle has come to a complete stop.
CAUTION
Never shift into the “P” (PARK) or “R”
(REVERSE) position while the vehicle
is in motion. If the lever is shifted into
the “P” or “R” position while the ve-
hicle is in motion, the transmission
may be damaged.
N - NEUTRALAt this position, the transmission is disen-
gaged. It is the same as the neutral position
on a manual transmission, and should be
used when the vehicle is stationary for an ex-
tended length of time during driving, such as
in a traffic jam.
WARNING
(1) Never move the selector lever to
the “N” position while driving.
A serious accident could occur
since you could accidentally
move the lever into the “P” or “R”
position and engine braking
would be lost.
(2) On a slope gradient, the engine
should be started in the “P”
(PARK) position, not in the “N”
(NEUTRAL) position.
(3) Always keep your right foot on
the brake pedal when the vehicle
is in “N” (NEUTRAL), or when
shifting into or out of “N” (NEU-
TRAL), to minimize the risk of
loss of control.
D - DRIVEThis position is for normal driving.
The transmission automatically selects a
suitable gear for your speed and acceler-
ation.
Engine braking is automatically applied
when necessary, depending on road condi-
tions.
Please refer to “Uphill/downhill driving” on
page 5–24.

WARNING
(1) Keep sparks, cigarettes, and
flames away from the battery be-
cause the battery could explode.
(2) The battery electrolyte is extremely
caustic. Do not allow it to come in
contact with your eyes, skin, cloth-
ing, or the painted surfaces of the
vehicle. Spilled electrolyte should
be flushed immediately with ample
amounts of water.
Irritation to eyes or skin from con-
tact with electrolyte requires im-
mediate medical attention.
(3) Ventilate when charging or using
the battery in an enclosed space.
CAUTION
(1) Never disconnect the battery with
the ignition switch in the “ON”
position; doing so could damage
the vehicle’s electrical compo-
nents.
(2) Never short - circuit the battery;
doing so could cause it to over-
heat and damage it.
CAUTION
(3) Always wear protective eye
goggles when working near the
battery.
(4) If the battery is to be
quick -charged, first disconnect
the battery cables.
(5) In order to prevent a short circuit,
be sure to disconnect the nega-
tive (–) terminal first.
(6) Keep it out of the reach of
children.
NOTE
(1) Keep the terminals clean. After the bat-
tery is connected, apply terminal protec-
tion grease. To clean the terminals, use
lukewarm water.
(2) Check to see if the battery is securely in-
stalled and cannot be moved during
travel. Also check each terminal for
tightness.
(3) When the vehicle is to be left unused for
a long period of time, remove the battery
and store it in a place where the battery
fluid will not freeze. The battery should
be stored only in a fully charged condi-
tion.

Brake fluidEM08A-Oh
Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir.
The brake fluid level must be between the
“MAX” and “MIN” marks on the reservoir.
The fluid level falls slightly with wear of the
brake pads, but this does not indicate any
abnormality.
If the brake fluid level falls markedly in a short
length of time, it indicates leaks from the
brake system.
If this occurs, have the vehicle checked by
an authorized MITSUBISHI dealer.
