When transporting children in your vehicle,some type of child restraint system should al-
ways be used according to the size of the child. This is required by law in most coun-
tries.
The regulations concerning driving with chil- dren in the front seat may differ from country
to country. You are advised to comply with the relevant regulations.
WARNINGl When possible, put children in the rear
seat. Accident statistics indicate that chil- dren of all sizes and ages are safer when
properly restrained in the rear seat rather than in the front seat.
l Holding a child in your arms is no substi-
tute for a restraint system. Failure to use
a proper restraint system can result in se- vere or fatal injury to the child.
l Each child restraint device or fixing is to
be used only by one child.WARNINGl When attaching a child restraint system
to the rear seat, adjust the front seat to
prevent the front seatbacks from touching the child’s feet and child restraint system.
Otherwise, the child could be seriously in-
jured in the event of hard braking or a

designed to deploy at the same time as the driver’s front airbag.

The front airbags and driver’s knee airbag ARE DESIGNED
TO DEPLOY when…
The front airbags and driver’s knee airbag are
designed to deploy when the vehicle suffers a moderate to severe frontal impact. The typi-
cal condition is shown in the illustration.
1- Head-on collision with a solid wall at
speed of approximately 25 km/h
(16 mph) or higher
2- Moderate-to-severe frontal impact with-
in the shaded area between the arrows
The front airbags and driver’s knee airbag
will deploy if the severity of impact is above
the designed threshold level, comparable to an approximately 25 km/h (16 mph) collision
when impacting straight into a solid wall that
does not move or deform. If the severity of the impact is below the above threshold level,
the front airbags and driver’s knee airbag may not deploy. However, this threshold
speed will be considerably higher if the vehi- cle strikes an object that absorbs the impact
by either deforming or moving (for example,
another stationary vehicle, pole or a guard
rail).
Because frontal collisions can easily move you out of position, it is important to always
properly wear your seat belts. Your seat belts will help keep you a safe distance from thesteering wheel and instrument panel during
the initial stages of airbag deployment. The
initial stage of airbag inflation is the most
forceful, and can possibly cause serious or fa- tal injuries. Moreover, the seat belts in your
vehicle are your primary means of protection in a collision. The SRS airbags are designed
to provide additional protection. Therefore, for your safety and the safety of all occu-
pants, be sure to always properly wear your seat belts.

The front airbags and driver’s
knee airbag MAY NOT DE- PLOY when…
With certain types of frontal collisions, thevehicle’s body structure is designed to absorb
the shock to help protect the occupants from harm. (The vehicle body’s front area may de-form significantly as it absorbs the impact.) Under such circumstances, the front airbags and driver’s knee airbag may not deploy irre-
spective of the deformation and damage to the vehicle body.
Examples of some typical conditions are shown in the illustration.
1- Collision with a utility pole, tree or other
narrow object
2- Vehicle slides under the rear body of a
truck
3- Oblique frontal impacts
Because the front airbags and driver’s knee
airbag do not protect the occupant in all types
of frontal collisions, be sure to always prop- erly wear your seat belts.

The front airbags and driver’s knee airbag are
not designed to deploy in conditions where they cannot typically provide protection to
the occupant.
Such conditions are shown in the illustration.

The seat belts in your vehicle are your pri-mary means of protection in a collision. The SRS side airbags and curtain airbags are de-
signed to provide additional protection. Therefore, for your safety and the safety of all occupants, be sure to always properly
wear your seat belts.

This lamp illuminates whenthe ignition switch is turnedto the “ON” position or the
operation mode is put in ON, and goes off after a few sec-onds.
Always make sure that the lamp goes off be- fore driving.
With the ignition switch or the operation mode in ON, the brake warning lamp illumi-
nates under the following conditions:
l When the parking brake lever has been
engaged.
l When the brake fluid level in the reser-
voir falls to a low level.
l When the brake force distribution func-
tion is not operating correctly.
With the ignition switch or the operation
mode in ON, a buzzer sounds under the fol- lowing condition:
l The vehicle speed exceeds 8 km/h
(5 mph) with the parking brake applied.
CAUTIONl In the situations listed below, brake perform-
ance may be compromised or the vehicle may become unstable if brakes are applied
suddenly; consequently, avoid driving at
high speeds or applying the brakes suddenly. Furthermore, the vehicle should be brought
to a stop in a safe location and to have it
checked.
• The brake warning lamp does not illumi-
nate when the parking brake is applied ordoes not turn off when the parking brake is released.
• The ABS warning lamp and brake warn-
ing lamp illuminate at the same time
For details, refer to “ABS warning lamp”
on page 6-57.
• The brake warning lamp remains illumi-
nated during driving.
l The vehicle should be brought to a halt in
the following manner when brake perform- ance has deteriorated.
• Depress the brake pedal harder than usual.
Even if the brake pedal moves down to
the very end of its possible stroke, keep it
pressed down hard.
• Should the brakes fail, use engine braking
to reduce your speed and pull the parking
brake lever.
Depress the brake pedal to operate the
stop lamp to alert the vehicles behind you.Check engine warning lamp

This lamp is a part of an on-
board diagnostic system
which monitors the emis-
sions, engine control system or A/T control system.
If a problem is detected in
one of these systems, this lamp illuminates or flashes.
Although your vehicle will usually be driva-
ble and not need towing, we recommend you
to have the system checked as soon as possi-
ble.
This lamp will also illuminate when the igni-
tion switch is turned “ON” or the operation mode is put in ON, and goes off after the en-gine has started. If it does not go off after the
engine has started, we recommend you to have the vehicle checked.
CAUTIONl Prolonged driving with this lamp on may
cause further damage to the emission control
system. It could also affect fuel economy and drivability.
l If the lamp does not illuminate when the ig-
nition switch is turned to the “ON” position
or the operation mode is put in ON, we rec- ommend you to have the system checked.

NOTElThe indication lamp blinks while the rear
differential lock is being switched between
its activated and deactivated conditions. When the switching operation is complete,
the indication lamp is either illuminated steadily or not illuminated.
l The ASTC and ABS functions are suspen-
ded while the rear differential lock is activa-
ted.
ASTC indication lamp, ASTC OFF indica- tion lamp and ABS warning lamp are illumi- nated while these functions are suspended.
It does not indicate a problem. When the
rear differential lock is disengaged, these lamps go out and function again.
Refer to “ABS warning lamp” on page
6-57, “ASTC indication lamp, ASTC OFF in-
dication lamp” on page 6-62.
l If the indication lamp continues blinking af-
ter the switch has been pressed to deactivate
the rear differential lock, hold the steering
wheel in the straight ahead position then slowly depress and release the accelerator
pedal several times.
l If the indication lamp continues blinking af-
ter the switch has been pressed to activate the rear differential lock, bear in mind thefollowing instructions:
• If the vehicle speed is 12 km/h or higher,
decelerate to a speed of 2.5 km/h or low-er. The indication lamp will illuminate
steadily and the rear differential lock will be activated.NOTE• If the vehicle speed is 12 km/h or lower,
turn the steering wheel from side to side
until the indication lamp illuminates steadily. If the vehicle is stuck in softground, make sure the area around the ve-
hicle is clear then repeatedly attempt to
drive forward and backward. The indica- tion lamp will illuminate steadily and the
rear differential lock will be activated.CAUTIONl If a problem is detected in the rear differen-
tial lock system, a safety device will acti- vate. The rear differential lock indication lamp will blink rapidly (twice per second),
and the rear differential lock will deactivate. Park your vehicle in a safe place, turn off the
engine for a few moments. Restart the en- gine. It is safe to continue driving if the lamps resume normal operation. If the rear differential lock indication lamp blinks whenthe rear differential lock is reactivated, have
the vehicle checked by a MITSUBISHI
MOTORS Authorized Service Point as soon
as possible.Examples of effective use of the

CAUTIONl Use the rear differential lock only as an
emergency measure when the vehicle is stuck and cannot be freed with the drivemode-selector in “4L” or “4H” position (Easy select 4WD) or in “4LLc” or “4HLc” position (Super select 4WD II). Deactivate

WARNINGlGo straight up. Do not try to traverse
across a steep slope.
l If you begin to lose traction, ease off the
accelerator pedal and gently turn the
steering wheel alternatively left and right to regain adequate traction again.NOTEl Choose as smooth a slope as possible with
few stones or other obstacles.
l Before attempting to drive up the slope,
walk up it to confirm that the vehicle canhandle the grade.
Descending sharp grades
Set the drive mode-selector to “4L” position
(Easy select 4WD), “4LLc” position (Super
select 4WD II), use the engine brake (down- shifting) and descend slowly.
WARNINGl Avoid snaking down a sharp grade. De-
scend the grade as straight as possible.NOTEl When descending a sharp grade, if the
brakes are applied suddenly because of an
obstacle encountered, control of the vehicle
could be lost. Before descending the slope,
walk down it and confirm the path.
l Before descending a grade, it is necessary to
choose the appropriate gear. Avoid changing
gears or depressing the clutch while de- scending the grade.

negligent operation of a vehicle. All techni- ques of vehicle operation described herein depend on the skill and experience of the op-
erator and other participating parties and any
deviation from the recommended operation instructions above is at their own risk.
Turning sharp corners
When turning a sharp corner in “4H” or “4L”
position (Easy select 4WD), “4HLc” or “4LLc” position (Super select 4WD II) at low
speed, a slight difference in steering may be experienced similar to as if the brakes wereapplied. This is called tight corner braking
and results from each of the 4 tyres being at a different distance from the corner.
Crossing a stream
4-wheel drive vehicles are not necessarily
waterproof. If the electrical circuits become
wet, further operation of the vehicle will be impossible; therefore, avoid crossing streams
unless absolutely necessary. If crossing a
stream is unavoidable, use the following pro- cedure: 1. Check depths of a stream and geographi-
cal features before attempting to cross a
stream and ford the stream where the water is as shallow as practicable.
2. Set the drive mode-selector to “4L” po-
sition (Easy select 4WD), “4LLc” posi-
tion (Super select 4WD II).
3. Drive slowly at a speed of approximate-
ly 5 km/h (3 mph) to avoid splashing too
much water.
CAUTIONl Never cross a stream where the water is
deep.
Do not change gears while crossing the stream.
Frequent crossing of streams can adversely affect the life span of the vehicle; we recom-mend you to take the necessary measures toprepare, inspect, and repair the vehicle.
