The engine is warmed up enough for driv- ing when the bar graph of engine coolant temperature display starts to move. A lon- ger warm up period will only consumeextra fuel. [For vehicles equipped with the turbo- charger]The engine is warmed up enough for driv- ing when the bar graph of engine coolant temperature display starts to move. Driv-ing before the bar graph moves may causedeterioration of turbocharger performance and driveability. A longer warm up period will only consume extra fuel. On vehicles equipped with the Twin Clutch SST, the following may occur after the engine is started, but they do not indi-cate an abnormality. • You may hear operational sounds of the Twin Clutch SST and you may feelvibration in the vehicle body. • If you shift the gearshift lever into the “N” (NEUTRAL) position and depressthe accelerator pedal, increases in the engine speed will be limited.

[For vehicles equipped with the F.A.S.T.- key.]For information on operation for vehicles equipped with the F.A.S.T.-key, refer to “F.A.S.T.-key: Starting the engine” on page5-20. [Except for vehicles equipped with the F. A . S . T. - k e y. ]Your vehicle is equipped with an electroni- cally controlled fuel injection system, which automatically controls the release of fuel.
There is usually no need to depress the accel- erator pedal when starting the engine. The starter should not be run for more than 15seconds at a time.To prevent battery drain, wait a few seconds between attempts to restart the engine. 1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened 2. Insert the ignition key. 3. Make sure the parking brake is applied.4. Press and hold the brake pedal down withyour right foot. 5. Press and hold the clutch pedal all the way down (manual transaxle). 6. On vehicles with manual transaxle, place the gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral) position. On vehicles with continuously variable transmission (CVT) or Twin Clutch SST, make sure the selector lever (CVT) orgearshift lever (Twin Clutch SST) is in the “P” (PARK) position.
WA R N I N G Never run the engine in a closed or poorly ventilated area any longer than is needed to move your vehicle out of the area. Car- bon monoxide gas, which is odorless and extremely poisonous, could build up andcause serious injury or death.CAUTION Do not push-start the vehicle.Do not run the engine
at high rpms or drive
at high speeds until the engine has had a chance to warm up. Release the ignition switch as soon as the engine starts. Otherwise, the starter motorwill be damaged.

The selector lever has 5 positions.
The CVT has 2 forward selector positions and 1 reverse selector position.
NOTE
The selector lever cannot be moved from “P” (PARK) to another position if the ignition switch is at the “LOCK” or “ACC” position, or the key has been removed, or if the brakepedal is not pressed and held down.
Except for vehicles with manual gate
With the brake pedal depressed, set the selector lever in the gate to operate. Set the selector lever in the gate to operate.
WA R N I N G Always depress the brake pedal when shifting the selector lever into a selector position from the “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) position. When beginning to drive, do not shift theselector lever from the “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) position while depress- ing the accelerator pedal. Doing so is dan-gerous because the vehicle will “jump” forward or backward.NOTE
To ensure proper transmission operation, stop at each detent position when shifting. After shifting, check the position in the multi-information display. If the brake pedal is not depressed and held, the shift-lock device activates to prevent theselector lever from being moved from the “P” (PARK) position. For a shift indicated by in the illustration, depress the brake pedal before moving the selector lever. If y
ou attempt to move the

This position locks th
e transmission to pre-
vent the vehicle from moving. The engine canbe started from the “PARK” position.
Move the lever to this position only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop. At this position, the transmission is disen- gaged. It is the same as the neutral position ona manual transaxle and should be used when the vehicle is not moving for an extended length of time during driving, such as in atraffic jam.
This position is used for most city and high- way driving. The transmission will automati- cally and continuously change its gear ratio depending on road and driving conditions. This position is for driv
ing up very steep hills
and for engine braking at low speeds when driving down steep hills.
• Slow down your vehicle.• Stop your vehicle in a safe place, put the selector lever in the “P” (PARK) position, and open the engine hood with the enginerunning to allow the engine to cool down. After a while, confirm that the warning display is no longer showing. It is safe to continue driving if the display is no longershowing. If the warning display remains or flashes frequently, have your vehicle inspected by an authorized MitsubishiMotors dealer or a repair facility of your choice. [When warning display is showing] It may be that there is something unusual happening in the CVT, causing a safety device to activate. Have your vehicleinspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice as soon as possible.

CAUTION
“R” REVERSE
CAUTION Never shift into the “P” (PARK) or “R” (REVERSE) position while the vehicle is inmotion. If the lever is shifted into the “P” (PARK) or “R” (REVERSE) position while the vehicle is in motion, the transmissionmay be damaged.
“N” NEUTRAL
WA R N I N G Never move the selector lever to the “N” (NEUTRAL) position while driving since you could accidentally slip it into the “P”(PARK) or “R”(REVERSE) position, damaging the transmission.
To prevent the vehicle from rolling when stopped on a slope, the engine should be started in the “P” (PARK) position, not in “N” (NEUTRAL) position. To prevent rolling, always keep your foot on the brake pedal when the vehicle is in “N” (NEUTRAL) position, or when shift-ing into or out of “N” (NEUTRAL) posi- tion.
“D” DRIVE
CAUTION To prevent transmission damage, never shift into the “D” (DRIVE) position from the “R” (REVERSE) position while the vehicle is inmotion.

To maintain good running performance, the transmission may refuse to perform an upshift when the sportronic steering wheel paddle shifter is moved to the “+(SHIFT UP)” position at certain vehicle speeds. Also, to prevent over-revving of the engine, the transmission may refuse to perform a downshift when the sportronic steeringwheel paddle shifter is moved to the “- (SHIFT DOWN)” position at certain vehicle speeds. When this happens, a buzzer soundsto indicate that a downshift is not going to take place. Do not operate sportronic steering wheel paddle shifter violently. Excessive force could damage the sportronic steering wheelpaddle shifter.
Sports mode display
NOTE
NOTE
While driving in sports mode, the sports mode display may change to show “D” and shifting in sports mode may no longer bepossible. This indicates that controls to drive in the “D” position are operating normally in orderto lower the temperature of the continuously variable transmission (CVT) fluid; it does not indicate a malfunction. Once the temper-ature of the continuously variable transmis- sion (CVT) fluid drops, shifting in the sports mode will be possible again.
Operation of the CVT
CAUTION Before selecting a position with the engine running and the vehicle stationary, fully depress the brake pedal to prevent the vehi- cle from creeping.Do not release the brakes until you are ready to drive away. The vehicle will begin to move as soon as the CVT is engaged, espe-cially when the engine speed is high (fast idle or air conditioning on). Depress the brake pedal with the right foot. Using the left foot could cause driver move- ment delay in case of an emergency. To prevent sudden acceleration, never run the engine at high rpms when shifting fromthe “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) posi- tion. Operating the accelerator pedal while the other foot is resting on the brake pedal will affect braking efficiency and may cause pre-mature wear of brake pads. Use the selector lever in the correct shift position in accordance with driving condi- tions. Never coast downhill backward in the driv- ing shift position { “D” (DRIVE), “L” (LOW) or sports mode} or coast forward inthe “R” (REVERSE) position. Engine stopping and increased brake pedal and steering effort could lead to an accident.

The pull-ring (D) must be pulled up while the brake pedal is depressed to move the gearshift lever. The gearshift lever will move without pulling up the pull-ring (D). The pull-ring (D) must be pulled up to move the gearshift lever.
WA R N I N G If the pull-ring is always pulled up when using the gearshift lever, the gearshift lever may be accidentally shifted into the “P” (PARK) or “R” (REVERSE) position. Do not pull up the pull-ring when making shifts shown by in the illustration. Always depress the brake pedal when shifting the gearshift lever into another position from the “P” (PARK) or “N” When beginning to drive, do not shift the gearshift lever from the “P” (PARK) or“N” (NEUTRAL) position while depress- ing the accelerator pedal. Doing so is dan- gerous because the vehicle will “jump”forward or backward.NOTE
For a shift indicated by in the illustration, depress the brake pedal before moving the gearshift lever. If you attempt to move thegearshift lever before depressing the brake pedal, the gearshift lever will be immovable. Do not accelerate immediately after moving the gearshift lever. It may take some time for the transmission to shift to the selected gear. When the gearshift lever is operated when the Twin Clutch SST fluid temperature islow, the time required to shift to the selected gear may be longer than usual.
