The brake assist system is a device assisting drivers who cannot depress the brake pedal firmly such as in emergency stop situationsand provides greater braking force. If the brake pedal is depressed suddenly, the brakes will be applied with more force than usual.

The hill start assist makes it easy to start off on a steep uphill slope by preventing thevehicle from moving backwards. It keeps the braking force for about 2 seconds when you move your foot from the brake pedal to theaccelerator pedal.

Brake assist system
CAUTION The brake assist system is not a device designed to exercise braking force greaterthan its capacity. Make sure to always keep a sufficient distance between vehicles in front of you without relying too much on the brakeassist system.NOTE
 Once the brake assist system is operational, it maintains great braking force even if the brake pedal is lightly released. To stop its operation, completely removeyour foot from the brake pedal.
 The brake assist system may become opera- tional when the brake pedal is fully depressed even if it has not been depressed suddenly.  When the brake assist system is in use while driving, you may feel as if the depressed brake pedal is soft, the pedal moves in smallmotions in conjunction with the operation noise, or the vehicle body and the steering wheel vibrate. This occurs when the brakeassist system is operating normally and does not indicate faulty operation. Continue to depress the brake pedal.  You may hear an operation noise when the brake pedal is suddenly or fully depressedwhile stationary. This does not indicate a malfunction and the brake assist system is operating normally.
Hill start assist (vehicles with Twin Clutch SST)
NOTE
CAUTION Do not overly rely on the hill start assist to prevent backwards movement of the vehicle. Under certain circumstances, even when hill start assist is activated, the vehicle may move backwards if the brake pedal is not suf-ficiently depressed, if the vehicle is heavily loaded, or if the road is very steep or slip- pery. The hill start assist is not designed to keep the vehicle stopped in place on uphill slopesfor more than 2 seconds. When facing uphill, do
not rely on using the
hill start assist to maintain a stopped position as an alternative to depressing the brake pedal.Doing so could cause an accident. Do not turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” or “ACC” position while the hill start assist is operating. The hill start assist could stop operating, which could result inan accident.

 When using the anti-lock brakes (sudden braking), steering is slightly different from normal driving conditions. Use thesteering wheel carefully.  Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Even if your vehi-cle is equipped with the anti-lock braking system, leave a greater braking distance when:• Driving on gravel or snow-coveredroads. • Driving on uneven road surfaces.  Operation of anti-lock braking system is not restricted to situations where brakes are applied suddenly. This system may also prevent the wheels from lockingwhen you drive over manholes, steel roadwork plates, road markings, or any uneven road surface.  When the anti-lock braking system is in use, you may feel the brake pedal vibrat- ing and hear a unique sound. You mayalso feel as if the pedal resists being pressed. In this situation, si
mply hold the brake
pedal down firmly. Do not pump the brake, which will result in reduced braking performance.
NOTE
 The hill start assist is activated when all of the following conditions are met. • The engine is running. (The hill start assist will not be activated while the engine is starting or immediatelyafter the engine is started.) • The gearshift lever is in any position other than “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL). • The vehicle is completely stationary, with the brake pedal depressed. • The parking brake is released. The hill start assist w
ill not operate if the
accelerator pedal is depressed before thebrake pedal is released.  The hill start assist also operates when reversing on an uphill slope.

CAUTION If the warning is displayed, the hill start assist will not operate. Start off carefully. Park your vehicle in a safe place and stop the engine. Restart the engine and check whether the display/indicator goes out, in which case the hill start assist is
again working normally.
If they remain displayed or reappear fre- quently, it is not necessary to stop the vehicle immediately, but the vehicle should beinspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice as soon as possible.

Under normal conditions, the anti-lock brak-ing system warning light only comes on when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position and goes off a few seconds later.

CAUTION The anti-lock braking system cannot prevent accidents. It is your responsibility to take safety precautions and to drive carefully.  To prevent failure of the anti-lock braking system, be sure all four wheels and tires are the same size and the same type. Never install a limited slip differential as the ABS may not function normally. Please consult an authorized MitsubishiMotors dealer.NOTE
 After your vehicle is driven a short distance after starting the engine, you will hear thesound coming from the engine compartment. These are the normal sounds the anti-lock braking system makes when performing aself-check. It does not indicate a malfunc- tion.  The anti-lock braking system can be used after the vehicle has reached a speed over approximately 6 mph (10 km/h). It stopsworking when the vehicle slows below approximately 3 mph (5 km/h).

e. This system, like
any other system, has limits and cannot help you to maintain traction and control of thevehicle in all circumstances. Reckless driv- ing can lead to accidents. It is the driver’s responsibility to drive carefully, This means taking into account the traffic, road and envi- ronmental conditions. Be sure to use the same specified type and size of tire on all four wheels. Otherwise, theASC may not work properly.
 Do not install any aftermarket limited slip differential (LSD) on your vehicle. The ASC may stop functioning properly.NOTE
 An operation noise may be emitted from the engine compartment in the following situa- tions. The sound is associated with checkingthe operations of the ASC. At this time, you may feel a shock from the brake pedal if you depress it. These do not indicate a malfunc-tion. • When the ignition switch is set to the “ON” position. • When the vehicle is driven for a while after the engine is turned on.
 When the ASC is activated, you may feel a vibration in the vehicle body or hear a whin- ing sound from the engine compartment. This indicates that the system is operatingnormally. It does not indicate a malfunction.  When the anti-lock braking system warning light is illuminated, the ASC is not active.

CAUTION
CAUTION When driving a vehicle on a snowy or icy road, be sure to install snow tires and drive the vehicle at moderate speeds.
Skid control function

NOTE
 The skid control function operates at speeds of about 9 mph (15 km/h) or higher.

When the ASC is deactivated, the dis- play/indicator will turn on. To reactivate the ASC, momentarily press the “ASC OFF” switch ; the display/indicator is turned off.

CAUTION For safety reasons, the “ASC OFF” switch should be operated when your vehicle isstopped.  Be sure to keep the ASC on while driving in normal circumstances.NOTE
 Using the “ASC OFF” switch turns off both the skid control function and the tractioncontrol function.
 When moving out of mud, sand or fresh snow, pressing the accelerator pedal may not allow the engine speed to increase. In such situations, temporarily turning off ASC with the “ASC OFF” switch will make it easier tomove out your vehicle.  If you continue to press the “ASC OFF” switch after the ASC is turned off, the “mis- taken operation protection function” will activate and the ASC will turn back on.

CAUTION When display/indicator blinks, ASC is operating, which means that the road is slip- pery or that your vehicle’s wheels are begin- ning to slip. If this happens, drive slower. If the temperature in the braking system con- tinues to increase due to continuous brake control on a slippery road surface, the display/indicator will blink. To prevent the brake system from overheating, the brake control of the traction control function willbe temporarily suspended. The engine con- trol of the traction control function and nor- mal brake operation will not be affected.Park your vehicle in a safe place. When the temperature in the braking system has come down, the display/indicator will be turned off and the traction control function will start operating again.NOTE
 The display/indicator may come on when you start the engine. This means that the bat- tery voltage momentarily dropped when theengine was started. It does not indicate a malfunction, provided that the display goes out immediately.  When a spare tire has been put on your vehi- cle, the gripping ability of the tire will be lower, making it more likely that the dis- play/indicator will blink.

Cruise control is an automatic speed control system. It lets you keep the same driving speed. Cruise control can be activated atabout 25 mph (40 km/h) or more. It is espe-cially useful for freeway driving. Cruise con- trol does not work at speeds below about 25 mph (40 km/h).
Electric power steering system (EPS)
(if so equipped)NOTE
 During repeated full-lock turning of the steering wheel (for example, while you are manoeuvring the vehicle into a parkingspace), a protection function may be acti- vated to prevent overheating of the power steering system. This function will make thesteering wheel gradually harder to turn. In this event, limit your tu
rning of the steering
wheel for a while. When the system hascooled down, the steering effort will return to normal.  If you turn the steering wheel while the vehi- cle is stationary with the headlights on, the headlights may become dim. This behavioris not abnormal. The headlights will return to their original brightness after a short while.
Electronic power steering system warning display

CAUTION If the warning display appears while the engine is running, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer ora repair facility of your choice as soon as possible. It may become harder to turn the steering wheel.
Cruise control
(if so equipped)
CAUTION For safety reasons, the cruise control system should be set to the “OFF” position by press- ing the “ON OFF” switch (A) when you are not using the cruise control system. Do not use cruise control when driving con- ditions will not allow you to stay at the same speed, such as in heavy traffic or on roadsthat are winding, icy, snowy, wet, slippery or on a steep downhill slope. On vehicles with manual transaxle, do not move the gearshift lever to the “N” (Neutral) position while driving at a set speed withoutdepressing the clutch pedal. The engine will run too fast and might be damaged. NOTE
 Cruise control may not be able to keep your speed on uphills or downhills.  Your speed may drop on a steep uphill. You may have to use the accelerator pedal if you want to stay at your set speed.  Your speed may increase to more than the set speed on a steep downhill. You must use the brake to control your speed.

Press and hold the “COAST SET” switch (B), the speed will slow down (coast) gradually. When you reach your desired speed, releasethe “COAST SET” switch. Your cruising speed is now set. To decrease the speed in small amounts, press the “COAST SET” switch (B) for less than 1 second and release it. Every time you press the “COAST SET” switch (B), the speed willdecrease by approximately 1 mph (1.6 km/h). Press the brake pedal (which disengages the cruise control) and wh
en the desired speed is
reached, press the “COAST SET” switch (B) and release the switch momentarily to set a new desired cruise speed.

The cruise control can be turned off as fol- lows:  Press the “ON OFF” switch (A). (Cruise control will be turned off.)  Press the “CANCEL” switch (D).  Depress the brake pedal or lightly tap it.
The cruise control will be turned off automat- ically in the following conditions:  When you depress the clutch pedal (on vehicles with manual transaxle).  Your speed slows to about 10 mph (15 km/h) or more below the set speedbecause of an uphill, etc.  Your speed slows to about 25 mph (40 km/h) or less. When the Twin Clutch SST control mode is set to “Sport” mode (on vehicles with Twin Clutch SST).Refer to “Twin Clutch SST control mode” on page 5-74.  When the active stability control (ASC) starts operating (if so equipped).

Also, the set speed driving may be deacti- vated as follow:  When the engine speed rises and approaches the tachometer’s red zone (thered-colored part of the tachometer dial).

You would have no engine braking andthis could cause a serious accident.CAUTION When the set speed driving is deactivated automatically in any situation other than those listed above, there may be a systemmalfunction. Fully apply the parking brake and move the shift lever into the “N” position (man- ual transaxle), the selector lever {continu- ously variable transmission (CVT)} or thegearshift lever (Twin Clutch SST) into the “P” position. 2. When you lightly press the multi-informa-tion meter switch, the information screen changes to the function setting screen. Refer to “Information screen (With igni-tion switch in the “ON” position)” onpage 5-116.
3. Press and hold the multi-information meter switch (for about 2 seconds or more) to switch from the setting mode screen to the menu screen.
4. Select the item to change on the menu screen and change to the desired setting. For further details on the operation meth- ods, refer to the following sections.
