especially

accept

ed gasolin

United
States,
fuel
suppliers
are
required
by
law
to add
deter
gents
to their
gas-
oline
to
minimize
fuel-injector
fouling
and
minimize
intake-valve
deposits.

gasoline
helps
keep
your
engine
in
tune
and
your
emission-control
system
working
prop-
erly
.
Your
vehicle
is
designed
to
operate
on
unleaded
gasoline
having
a minimum
octane
number of 87 [(MON+RON)/2], or 91 RON.MON: Motor Octane NumberRON: Research Octane Number Gasoline
sold
at
some
service
stations
con-
tains
oxygenates
such
as
ethanol,
although
the
oxygenates
may
not
be
identified
by
those
names.
Oxygenates
are
required

Do not use the gearshift lever as a handrest. This can result in premature wear of the transaxle shift forks.

The CVT will automatically and continuouslychange its gear ratio depending on road and driving conditions. This helps achievesmooth driving and excellent fuel efficiency. Also you can manually shift up and shift down the transmission. Refer to “Sportsmode” on page 5-64. The transmission prevents unnecessary upshifts even when the accelerator pedal is released and ensures smooth driving.

equipped with a continuously variable trans- mission have a shift-lock device that holdsthe selector lever in the “P” (PARK) position. To move the selector lever from the “P” (PARK) position to another position, followthe steps below. 1. Press and hold the brake pedal down. 2. Move the selector lever to the desired position.
The CVT has 2 forward selector positions and 1 reverse selector position. The CVT selects an optimum ratio automati-cally when the selector lever is in the “D” (DRIVE) or “L” (LOW) position, depending on the speed of the vehicle and the position ofthe accelerator pedal.The selector lever has 5 positions.

If the CVT does not shift while driving, or your vehicle does not pick up enough speed when starting on an uphill slope, there may be something unusual happening in the transmis-sion, causing a safety device to activate. Have your vehicle checked at an authorized Mit- subishi Motors dealer or a repair facility ofyour choice as soon as possible. 1. If your vehicle has difficulty moving uphill, shift the selector lever into “L” (LOW) position (except for vehicles withsport mode) or 2nd shift range of the sports mode. This method might not work dependingon the type of transmission malfunction.
 Do not rev the engine with the brake pedal pressed when the vehicle is stationary. This can damage the CVT. Also, when you depress the accelerator pedal while holding down the brake pedal with theselector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) position, the engine revolutions may not rise as high as when performing the same operation withthe selector lever in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position.
Passing acceleration

NOTE
 In sports mode, downshifts do not take place when the accelerator is depressed all the way to the floor.

CAUTION
CAUTION To avoid transmission overheating, never try to keep your vehicle stationary on a hill by using the accelerator pedal. Always apply the parking brake and/or service brake. Unexpected acceleration may occur if the selector lever is in a position other than “P”(PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL). Before driving off from a stop, make sure that the selector lever is in “D” (DRIVE)position or “Sports mode” position.
Parking

NOTE
 On a slope, be sure to apply the parking brake before moving the selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position. If you move the selec- tor lever to the “P” (PARK) position before applying the parking brake, it may be diffi-cult to disengage the selector lever from the “P” (PARK) position when next you drive the vehicle, requiring application of a strongforce to the selector lever to move from the “P” (PARK) position.

Good vehicle performance cannot be expected if there is a difference in wear between tires. Refer to “Tire rotation” on page 9-19.  Check the tire inflation pressure regularly.

Overuse of the brake can cause poor brake response and premature wear of the brake pads and linings.When driving down a long or steep hill, use engine braking by downshifting.
CAUTION Always use tires of the same size, same type, and same brand, and which have no wear dif-ferences. Using tires that differ in size, type, brands or the degree of wear, will increase the differential oil temperature, resulting inpossible damage to the driving system. Fur- ther, the drive train will be subjected to excessive loading, possibly leading to oilleakage, component seizure, or other serious problems.

CAUTION Do not tow all-wheel drive vehicles with the front or rear wheels on the ground (Type Aor Type B) as illustrated. This could result in damage to the drivetrain, or unstable towing. If you tow all-wheel drive vehicles, use Type C or Type D equipment. [For vehicle equipped with the Electronically controlled 4WD system] Even in “2WD” mode, the vehicle cannot betowed with the front or the rear wheels on the ground.
Jacking up a all-wheel drive vehicles
WA R N I N G Do not start or run the engine while the vehicle is on the jack.The jack could slip out of position and result in an accident.

WA R N I N G Do not leave any objects near the brake pedal or let a floor mat slide under it; doing so could prevent the full pedal stroke that would be necessary in anemergency. Make sure that the pedal can be operated freely at all times. Make sure the floor mat is securely held in place.

Your vehicle is equipped with power brakes for more braking force with minimal brakepedal effort. Your brakes are designed to operate at full capacity, even if the power assist is lost.If the power assist is lost, the effort needed to press the brake pedal is greater. If you should loose the power assist for somereason, the brakes will still work. If the power brake unit or either of the two brake hydraulic systems stops working prop-erly, the rest of the br
ake system will still
work, but the vehicle will not slow down as quickly.You will know this has happened if you find you need to depress the brake pedal down further, or harder when slowing down or stop-ping, or if the brake warning light and the warning display in the multi-information dis- play come on.

The disc brakes have an alarm that makes ametallic squeal when the brake pads haveworn down enough to need service. If you hear this sound, have the brake pads replaced at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer ora repair facility of your choice.

The brake assist system is a device assistingdrivers who cannot depress the brake pedalfirmly such as in emergency stop situations and provides greater braking force. If the brake pedal is depressed suddenly, the brakes will be applied with more force thanusual.
CAUTION It is important not to drive the vehicle with your foot resting on the brake pedal when braking is not required. This practice can result in very high brake temperatures, pre- mature pad and lining wear, and possibledamage to the brakes.
Power brakes
WA R N I N G Never coast downhill with the engine OFF. Keep the engine running whenever your vehicle is in motion. If you turn off the engine while driving, the power brake booster will stop working and your brakeswill not work as well. If the power assist is
lost or if either brake
hydraulic system stops working properly, take your vehicle to an authorized Mit- subishi Motors dealer or a repair facilityof your choice immediately.
Brake pad wear alarm
WA R N I N G Driving with worn brake pads will make it harder to stop, and can cause an accident.
Brake assist system
CAUTION The brake assist system is not a device designed to exercise braking force greater than its capacity. Make sure to always keep asufficient distance between vehicles in front of you without relying too much on the brake assist system.NOTE
 Once the brake assist system is operational, it maintains great braking force even if the brake pedal is lightly released. To stop its operation, completely remove your foot from the brake pedal.  The brake assist system may become opera- tional when the brake pedal is fullydepressed even if it has not been depressed suddenly.

Rheostat meter illumination button
NOTE
 You can adjust to 8 different levels respec- tively for when the tail lights are illuminated and when they are not.  If the vehicle is equipped with the automatic light control, when the light switch is in a position other than the “OFF” position, themeter illumination switches automatically to the adjusted brightness, depending on the brightness outside the vehicle.
 The brightness level of the instruments is stored in memory when the ignition switch is turned off.  If you press and hold the button for longer than about 1 second when the parking lights are illuminated, the brightness level changes to the maximum level. Pressing and holdingthe button for longer than about 1 second again returns the brightness level to the pre- vious level.NOTE

The multi-information meter switch is a but- ton marked “INFO” on the left side of the dash.Each time the multi-information meter switch is operated, a sound is emitted and the multi- information display changes between infor-mation such as warnings, odometer, trip odometer, service reminder, engine coolant temperature (Type 1), average and momen-tary fuel consumption, driving range, and average speed. It is also possible to
change elements such as
the language and units used on the multi-
information display by operating the multi- information meter switch.
