 The indicator light (5) comes on each time a button is pressed.  The keyless entry system does not work if the key is in the ignition switch.  The F.A.S.T.-key can be used from about 40 feet (12 m) away. However, this distance may change if your vehicle is near a TVtransmitting tower, a power station, or a radio station.  If the UNLOCK button (2) is pressed when all doors are locked and no doors are openedwithin about 30 seconds, the doors will auto- matically re-lock.  If the following conditions are observed after pressing the buttons on the remote control transmitter, the battery in the remote controltransmitter may need to be replaced.
• The doors cannot be locked or unlocked. • The trunk lid cannot be opened.• The panic alarm cannot be operated.• The indicator light (5) is dim or does not come on.
 If you lose your F.A.S.T.-key, please contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for areplacement.  If you wish to obtain
an additional F.A.S.T.-
key, please contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. A maximum of four F.A.S.T.- key can be programmed for your vehicle.  To use the new remote control transmitters, it is necessary to register the key with both theelectronic immobilizer and keyless entry sys- tem. Also refer to “Electronic immobilizer (Anti-theft starting system): Customer F.A.S.T.- key programming” on page 5-28.

5. Close the remote control transmitter case firmly. 6. Check the keyless entry system to see that it works.

4. The system has entered the armed stage after about 20 seconds, when the theft- alarm indicator (A) flashing becomes slower.The theft-alarm indicator (A) continues to flash while the system is in the armed stage.

The alarm will be activated if any of the fol-lowing occur while the vehicle is parked andthe system is armed.
 One of the doors is opened without using the remote control transmitter or the F. A . S . T. - k e y.  The engine hood or the trunk lid is opened.
When the alarm is activated: 1. The headlights blink on and off for 3 min- utes.After 3 minutes the headlights automati- cally shut off. 2. The horn will sound intermittently for 3minutes.

NOTE
 If the engine hood or the trunk lid is open, the theft-alarm indicator (A) illuminates and the system cannot enter the armed stage. The system enters the armed stage about 20 sec-onds after the engine hood or the trunk lid is closed.  The system will be disarmed if, while the theft-alarm indicator (A) is illuminated, all doors are unlocked by remote control trans-mitter or the F.A.S.T.-key.  The system will be disarmed if, while the theft-alarm indicator is illuminated, the igni- tion switch is turned to the “ON” position.  The system will not be
armed if a door or the
trunk lid or the engine hood is not com- pletely closed. If this happens, rearm the sys-tem as described above.

tion switch to turn to the “LOCK” position.CAUTION Do not remove the ignition key from the ignition switch while driving. The steering wheel will lock, causing loss of control. If the engine is turned off while driving, the power brake booster will stop functioning and braking efficiency will be reduced. Also,the power steering system will not function and it will require greater effort to manually steer the vehicle.CVT
 Do not leave the key in the “ON” position for a long time when the engine is not running. This will cause the battery to run down. Do not turn the key to the “START” position when the engine is running. It will damage the starter motor.

Trying repeatedly withthe engine or starter motor still turning will damage the starter mechanism.  If the engine will not start because the bat- tery is weak or discharged, refer to “Jump-starting the engine” (on page 8-2) for instructions. The engine is warmed up enough for driv- ing when the bar graph of engine coolant temperature display starts to move. A lon-ger warm up period will only consume extra fuel.

There is usually no need to depress the accel- erator pedal when starting the engine. The starter should not be run for more than 15 seconds at a time.To prevent battery drain, wait a few seconds between attempts to restart the engine. 1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened 2. Insert the ignition key. 3. Make sure the parking brake is applied.4. When the selector lever cannot be shifted from the “P” (PARK) position to another position while the brake pedal is pressed and held down with the ignition switch at the“ON” position, the battery may be flat or the shift-lock mechanism may be malfunction- ing.Immediately have your vehicle checked by anauthorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice. If you need to move the vehicle, shift theselector lever as follows. 1. Make sure the parking brake is fully applied. 2. Stop the engine if it is running.3. Insert a screwdriver with a cloth over its tip into the notch (A) of the cover. Pry gently as shown to remove the cover.
4. Depress the brake pedal with the right foot. 5. Turn the ignition switch to the “ACC”position. 6. Insert a screwdriver in the shift-lock release hole (B). Shift the selector lever to the “N” (NEUTRAL) position whilepressing the screwdriver down.
Set the selector lever in the gate to operate.
WA R N I N G Always depress the brake pedal when shifting the selector lever into a selectorposition from the “P” (PARK) or “N” When beginning to drive, do not shift theselector lever from the “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) position while depress- ing the accelerator pedal. Doing so is dan-gerous because the vehicle will “jump” forward or backward.NOTE
 To ensure proper transmission operation, stop at each detent position when shifting. Even if the cause of the warning display is not eliminated, you can return to the screen that was displayed before the warning dis-play. This light comes on in the event of a malfunc- tion in the charging system or when the igni- tion switch is turned to the “ON” position (engine off). A warning is also displayed inthe multi-information display. When the engine is started,

Type 1 Type 2 This warning is displayed if the vehicle is being driven with the parking brake still applied. The warning light in the instrumentcluster only comes on when the parking brake is applied.
CAUTION Driving for a long time with the engine mal- function indicator on may cause more dam- age to the emission control system. This could also affect fuel economy and drivabil- ity. If this indicator does not come on when the ignition key is turned to the “ON” position,have the system checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice. If the engine malfunction indicator comes on while the engine is running, avoid driving athigh speeds. During vehicle operation with the indicator on, the vehicle may not accelerate when youdepress the accelerator pedal. When the vehicle is stationary with the indi- cator on, you must depress the brake pedalmore firmly than usual since the engine idling speed is higher than usual and a vehi- cle with a CVT has a stronger tendency tocreep forward.
NOTE
 Do not disconnect the battery cable when the engine malfunction indicator (“SERVICE ENGINE SOON” or “Check engine light”) is on. The engine electronic control module storescritical OBD information (especially exhaust emission data), which may be lost if the bat- tery cable is disconnected while the enginemalfunction indicator is on. This will make it difficult to diagnose the cause of future prob- lems.

When changing lanes, or to making a gradual turn, hold the lever in
the “lane change” posi-
tion (1). It will return to the neutral positionwhen you let go. Use the full position (2) when making a normal turn. The lever will return to the neutral position when the turn iscomplete. There may be times when the lever does not return to the neutral position. This usually happens when the steering wheel isturned only slightly. You can easily return the lever by hand. Also, when you move the lever to (1) slightlythen release it, the turn signal lights and indi- cator light in the instrument cluster will flash three times.

If you press the flasher switch, the front andrear turn signals will flash intermittently, and so will the hazard warning lights. This is an emergency warning system and should not beused when the vehicle is in motion, except foremergencies. If you need to leave your vehicle, the flashers will keep working afte

 A light in the instrument panel flashes to show when the front and rear turn signal lights are working properly.If this light flashes faster than usual, check for a burned out light bulb or malfunctioning connection.If the panel light does not come on when the lever is moved, check for a blown fuse or a burned out bulb in the panel.Have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.  The turn signal light 3-flash function for lane changes can be deactivated.See your authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for details.  You can adjust the time required to operate the lever for the 3-flash function.
