Your vehicle is equipped with an electroni- cally controlled fuel injection system. This isa system that automatically controls fuel injection. There is no need to depress the accelerator pedal when starting the engine.The starter motor should not be run for more than 15 seconds at a time. To prevent battery drain, wait a few secondsbetween attempts to restart the engine. 1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened. 2. Make sure the parking brake is applied. 3. Press and hold the brake pedal downfirmly with your right foot. 4. Press and hold the clutch pedal all the way down (manual transaxle). 5. On vehicles with manual transaxle, place the gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral) position.On vehicles with continuously variable transmission (CVT) make sure the selec- tor lever is in the “P” (PARK) position.
6. While pushing the ignition switch from “LOCK” (PUSH OFF) to “LOCK” (PUSH ON), set the ignition switch to the“ON” position and confirm that all warn-ing lights and warning displays are oper- ating properly. 7. Without pressing the accelerator pedal,slowly turn the ignition switch to the “START” position to start the engine. Release the ignition switch when theengine starts.
After several attempts, you may experience that the engine still does not start.
WA R N I N G Never run the engine in a closed or poorly ventilated area any longer than is needed to move your vehicle out of the area. Car-bon monoxide gas, which is odorless and extremely poisonous, could build up and cause serious injury or death.CAUTION Do not push-start the vehicle.Do not run the engine at high rpms or drive at high speeds until the engine has had a chance to warm up. Release the ignition switch as soon as the engine starts. Otherwise, the starter motorwill be damaged.

NOTE

Wait a few seconds, and then crank the engine again for 5 to 6 seconds whiledepressing the brake pedal or the clutch pedal, but do not push the accelerator pedal. Release the ignition key if theengine starts. If the engine fails to start, repeat these procedures. If the engine still will not start, contact your local Mitsubi-shi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice for assistance.
When the ambient temperature is -4°F (-20°C) or lower, it may not be possible tostart from a standstill even with the selector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) or “R” (REVERSE) position.This phenomenon occurs because the trans- axle has not warmed up sufficiently; it does not indicate a problem. If this occurs, placethe selector lever in the “P” (PARK) positionand let the engine idle for at least 10 minutes. The transaxle will warm up, and you will be able to drive normally.Do not leave the vehicle during warm-up operation.

The emergency key is built into the F.A.S.T.- key.When the F.A.S.T.-key cannot be used, such as when the battery of the F.A.S.T.-key or the vehicle has run down, the emergency key can
be used to lock and unlock the driver’s door and to start the engine. To use the emergency key (1), unlock the lock knob (2) and remove it from the F.A.S.T.-key (3). Turn the emergency key toward the front of the vehicle to lock the door. After checking that the door is locked, turn the emergencykey back to the center and remove it.

Turn the emergency key to the “LOCK” posi- tion. Turn the steering wheel until it is locked. Turn the emergency key to the “ACC” posi- tion while moving the steering wheel slightly. Tips for starting
 Do not operate the starter motor continu- ously for longer than 15 seconds as this could run the battery down or damage the starter motor. If the engine does not start,turn the emergency key back to the “LOCK” position, wait a few seconds, and then try again. Trying repeatedly withthe engine or starter motor still turning will damage the starter mechanism.  If the engine will not start because the bat- tery is weak or discharged, refer to“Jump-starting the engine” on page 8-2 for instructions.  A longer warm up period will only con- sume extra fuel. The electronic immobilizer is designed to sig- nificantly reduce the possibility of vehicletheft. The purpose of the system is to immo- bilize the vehicle if an invalid start is attempted. A valid start attempt can only beachieved (subject to certain conditions) using a F.A.S.T.-Key “registered” to the immobi- lizer system.
WA R N I N G Make sure to remove the F.A.S.T.-key from the emergency key after the engine is started. If not removed, the F.A.S.T.-key could fall to the floor, which may interfere withpedal operation. Furthermore, the F.A.S.T.-key could pre- vent the driver’s knee airbag from inflat-ing normally or could be propelled to cause serious injury if the airbag inflates.NOTE
 When using the emergency key to start the engine, first remove the key from the key holder. If the emergency key is attached to a key holder (key ring), it may become impos-sible to insert the keyless operation key into the emergency key, and it may prevent the engine from being started.

NOTE
 The indicator light (5) comes on each time a button is pressed.  The keyless entry system does not work if the key is in the ignition switch.  The F.A.S.T.-key can be used from about 40 feet (12 m) away. However, this distance may change if your vehicle is near a TVtransmitting tower, a power station, or a radio station.  If the UNLOCK button (2) is pressed when all doors are locked and no doors are openedwithin about 30 seconds, the doors will auto- matically re-lock.  If the following conditions are observed after pressing the buttons on the remote control transmitter, the battery in the remote controltransmitter may need to be replaced.
• The doors cannot be locked or unlocked. • The trunk lid cannot be opened.• The panic alarm cannot be operated.• The indicator light (5) is dim or does not come on.
 If you lose your F.A.S.T.-key, please contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for areplacement.  If you wish to obtain
an additional F.A.S.T.-
key, please contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. A maximum of four F.A.S.T.- key can be programmed for your vehicle.  To use the new remote control transmitters, it is necessary to register the key with both theelectronic immobilizer and keyless entry sys- tem. slightly. Lift it to
open the trunk. Press the trunk button (Vehicles with keyless entry system or F.A.S.T.-key) or OPEN switch (Vehicles with F.A.S.T.-key). (See
“Keyless entry system” on page 5-7, 5-30 or “Free-hand Advanced Security Transmitter (F.A.S.T.-key)” on page 5-12.) The trunk lid will pop up
to slightly. Lift it to
open the trunk. Pull the trunk lid release lever, located to the left of the driver’s seat, up to open the trunk.

WA R N I N G It is dangerous to drive with the trunk lid open since carbon monoxide (CO) gas can enter the cabin. CO is an invisible, odor- less gas that can cause unconsciousnessand even death. Do not allow children to have access to the trunk, either by climbing into the trunk from outside or through the inside of the vehicle. Always close the trunk lid whenyour vehicle is unattended. If trapped in the trunk, it is possible to escape from the trunk by using the in
side emergency trunk
