Filling the fuel tank 3-4 General information

Front-wheel drive vehicles: 15.5 gal (59.0 L) All-wheel drive vehicles: 14.5 gal (55.0 L) 1. Before filling with fuel, stop the engine. 2. The fuel tank filler is located on the rear driver side of your vehicle. The fuel tank filler door can be openedfrom inside the vehicle with the fuel tank filler door release le
ver located at the left
side of the driver’s seat.
3. Open the fuel tank filler pipe by slowly turning the cap counterclockwise. 4. While filling with fuel, store the cap in the cap holder located on the inside of the fuel tank filler door.
5. To fill with fuel correctly depends mainly on correct handling of the fuel filler noz- zle. Do not tilt the nozzle. Insert the noz-zle in the tank port as far as it will go. 6. When the nozzle stops automatically, do not attempt to add more fuel.
 Keep the doors and windows closed while refueling the vehicle. If they were open, fuel vapor could get into the cabin.

WA R N I N G Since the fuel system may be under pres- sure, remove the fuel tank filler cap slowly. This relieves any pressure or vac-uum that might have built up in the fuel tank. If the cap is venting vapor or if you hear a hissing sound, wait until it stopsbefore removing the cap. Otherwise, fuel may spray out, injuring you or others.
CAUTION Your vehicle can only be operated using unleaded gasoline. Serious engine and cata-lytic converter damage will result if leaded gasoline is used.CAUTION To avoid fuel spillage
and overfilling, do not
“top-off” the fuel tank. Spilled fuel could discolor, stain, or crack the vehicle’s paint-work. If fuel spills on the paintwork, wipe it off with a soft cloth.

Type 2 When the ignition switch is in a position other than the “LOCK (PUSH OFF)”, if the door(s) are opened, the F.A.S.T. - key isremoved from the passenger compartment, and then the door(s) are closed, the warning display is displayed and the buzzer sounds 4times as a warning since it’s impossible to verify the ID codes of the F.A.S.T.-key and vehicle.

Type 1 Type 2 When the ignition switch is in the “LOCK (PUSH OFF)” position, the F.A.S.T.-key is left in the passenger compartment, all thedoors are closed, and someone tries to lock the vehicle by pressing the driver’s or front passenger’s door lock/unlock switch, thewarning display is displayed and the buzzer sounds for about 3 seconds as a warning, and the doors cannot be locked.If all the doors are manually locked andclosed while the ignition switch is in the “LOCK (PUSH OFF)” position and the F.A.S.T.-key is left in the car, the doors willautomatically unlock and a buzzer will sound for about 3 seconds.

1. Make sure that all electric devices, such as lights, air conditioning blower and rear window defogger, are turned off. 2. While depressing the brake pedal on vehi-cles equipped with continuously variable transmission (CVT) or the clutch pedal on the vehicles equipped with manual trans-axle, press the accelerator pedal halfway and hold it there, then crank the engine. Release the accelerator pedal, immedi-ately after the engine starts.3. If the engine still will not start, the engine could be flooded with too much gasoline. While depressing the brake pedal on vehi-cles equipped with CVT or the clutch pedal on the vehicles
equipped with man-
ual transaxle, push the accelerator pedalall the way down and hold it there, then crank the engine for 5 to 6 seconds. Return the ignition switch to the “LOCK”position and release the accelerator pedal. Wait a few seconds, and then crank the engine again for 5 to 6 seconds whiledepressing the brake pedal or the clutch pedal, but do not push the accelerator pedal. Release the ignition key if theengine starts. If the engine fails to start, repeat these procedures. If the engine still will not start, contact your local Mitsubi-shi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice for assistance.
When the ambient temperature is -4°F (-20°C) or lower, it may not be possible tostart from a standstill even with the selector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) or “R” (REVERSE) position.This phenomenon occurs because the trans- axle has not warmed up sufficiently; it does not indicate a problem. If this occurs, placethe selector lever in the “P” (PARK) positionand let the engine idle for at least 10 minutes. The transaxle will warm up, and you will be able to drive normally.Do not leave the vehicle during warm-up operation.

The emergency key is built into the F.A.S.T.- key.When the F.A.S.T.-key cannot be used, such as when the battery of the F.A.S.T.-key or the vehicle has run down, the emergency key can
be used to lock and unlock the driver’s door and to start the engine. To use the emergency key (1), unlock the lock knob (2) and remove it from the F.A.S.T.-key (3). Turn the emergency key toward the front of the vehicle to lock the door. After checking that the door is locked, turn the emergencykey back to the center and remove it.

The electronic immobilizer is designed to sig- nificantly reduce the possibility of vehicletheft. The purpose of the system is to immo- bilize the vehicle if an invalid start is attempted. A valid start attempt can only beachieved (subject to certain conditions) using a F.A.S.T.-Key “registered” to the immobi- lizer system.
WA R N I N G Make sure to remove the F.A.S.T.-key from the emergency key after the engine is started. If not removed, the F.A.S.T.-key could fall to the floor, which may interfere withpedal operation. Furthermore, the F.A.S.T.-key could pre- vent the driver’s knee airbag from inflat-ing normally or could be propelled to cause serious injury if the airbag inflates.NOTE
 When using the emergency key to start the engine, first remove the key from the key holder. If the emergency key is attached to a key holder (key ring), it may become impos-sible to insert the keyless operation key into the emergency key, and it may prevent the engine from being started.

Use the following procedure to test the sys-tem: 1. Lower the driver’s window. 2. Arm the system as explained in “Armed stage”. 3. Make sure that the theft-alarm indicatorcomes on and flashes for approximately 20 seconds. 4. Wait a few seconds and then unlock thedriver’s side door by using the inside door lock knob and open the door. 5. Check to be sure that the horn soundsintermittently and the headlights blink on and off when a door is opened. 6. Disarm the system by unlocking all doorsby the remote control transmitter or the F.  Never try to operate the main switch and sub switch in different directions at the sametime. This will freeze the window in posi- tion.  Operating the power windows repeatedly with the engine stopped will run down the battery. Use the window switches only whilethe engine is running. WA R N I N G Before operating the power windows, make sure that nothing can be trapped(head, hands, fingers, etc.) in the window.

The main switch located on the driver’s door can be used to operate all door windows. A window can be opened or closed by operat-ing the corresponding switch.Press the switch down to open the window, and pull up the switch to close it. If the driver’s door window switch is fullypressed down/pulled up, the driver’s door window automatically opens/closes com- pletely.If you want to stop the window movement, operate the switch lightly in the reverse direc- tion.
Each sub switch can be used for its own pas- senger door window, unless the driver’s win-dow lock switch is activated. The power windows can be run up or down when the ignition switch is in the “ON” posi- tion. The door windows can be opened or closedfor a 30 second period after the ignition switch is turned to the “ACC” or “LOCK” position. However, once the driver’s door orthe front passenger’s door is opened, the power windows cannot be operated.
 Never leave the vehicle with the key in the ignition switch.  Never leave a child alone in the vehicle.
