Your vehicle is designed to use unleaded gas- oline only. It is equipped with a fuel fillertube especially designed to accept only a small diameter unlead
ed gasoline dispensing
nozzle. In the United States, fuel suppliers are required by law to add detergents to their gas-
oline to minimize fuel-injector fouling and minimize intake-valve deposits. Detergent gasoline helps keep your engine in tune and your emission-control system working prop-erly. Your vehicle is designed to operate on unleaded gasoline having a minimum octanenumber of 87 [(MON+RON)/2], or 91 RON. Your vehicle is designed to operate on pre- mium grade unleaded gasoline having a mini- mum octane number of 93 [(MON+RON)/2] or higher for optimum performance. In casepremium grade unleaded gasoline 93 [(MON+RON)/2] is not available, unleaded gasoline number of 91 [(MON+RON)/2] canbe used. However, the performance level is reduced. In order to maintain exhaust system durabil-ity, premium unleaded gasoline having an octane number of at least 91 [(MON+RON)/2] must be used.
If the premium grade unleaded gasoline num- ber of 91 [(MON+RON)/2] or higher is not available on journey, etc., regular unleaded gasoline having an octane number of 87[(MON+RON)/2] can be used temporarily as an emergency measure. MON: Motor Octane Number RON: Research Octane Number Gasoline sold at some service stations con- tains oxygenates such as ethanol, although the oxygenates may not be identified by thosenames. Oxygenates are required in some areas of the country. Such fuel can be used in your vehicle. A mixture of up to 10 % ethanol (grain alco- hol) and 90 % unleaded gasoline may be usedin your vehicle, provided the octane number is at least as high as that recommended for unleaded gasoline.
Fuel selection
WA R N I N G Gasoline is highly flammable and explo- sive. You could be burned, seriouslyinjured or killed when handling it. When- ever you refuel your vehicle, stop the engine and keep flames, sparks, andsmoking materials away from the vehicle. Always handle fuel in well-ventilated out- door areas.CAUTION Using leaded gasoline in your vehicle will damage the engine, catalytic converter, and the oxygen sensors. Also, using leaded gaso-line is illegal, and will void your warranty coverage of the engine, catalytic converter, and oxygen sensors.

Child safety locks help prevent rear passen- gers, especially children, from opening the rear door using the inside door handle. A lock lever for the child safety lock is pro- vided on each rear door. When the lever is in the lock position (1), therear door cannot be opened using the inside door handle. To open the rear door when the child safetylock lever is in the lock position, pull the out- side door handle. When the lever is in the release position (2),the child safety lock is released and the rear
door can be opened using the inside door han- dle.

WA R N I N G Always keep the doors tightly closed and locked when driving. An unlocked door may be accidentally opened by a passen-ger, especially by a child who could fall out. Also, if the doors are not locked, there is a greater risk of someone being thrownfrom the vehicle in an accident.
Trunk lid
WA R N I N G It is dangerous to drive with the trunk lid open since carbon monoxide (CO) gas canenter the cabin. CO is an invisible, odor- less gas that can cause unconsciousness and even death. Do not allow children to have access to the trunk, either by climbing into the trunkfrom outside or through the inside of the vehicle. Always close the trunk lid when your vehicle is unattended. If trapped in the trunk, it is possible to escape from the trunk by using the inside emergency trunkrelease lever. (See “Inside emergency trunk lid release” on page 5-42.)
CAUTION Do not stand behind the exhaust pipe when loading and unloading luggage. Heat from the exhaust could lead to burns.

The shift pattern below is shown on the gear-shift lever. Press the clutch pedal all the waydown while shifting gears.
 For vehicles with Twin Clutch SST, if the temperature inside the engine compartment is high, the cooling fans (A) will continue to operate for some time even if the engine is stopped.Therefore, the operation sound of the cooling fans may be heard even after the engine is stopped. This sound is normal and does notindicate a malfunction. After operating for a period of time, the cool- ing fans will stop automatically.NOTE

CAUTION Do not run the engine at high speeds (for example, by revving it or by acceleratingrapidly) immediately after starting it. Do not stop the engine immediately after high-speed or uphill driving. First allow the engine to idle to give the turbocharger a chance to cool down. Engine oil must be properly maintained to avoid engine and/or turbocharger damage.To better protect your engine and turbo- charger, use fully synthetic engine oil.

This light comes on in the event of a malfunc- tion in the charging system or when the igni- tion switch is turned to the “ON” position (engine off). A warning is also displayed inthe multi-information display. When the engine is started,
the light should go out.
Check to make sure that the light has goneout before driving.

Type 1 Type 2 This warning is displayed if the vehicle is being driven with the parking brake still applied. The warning light in the instrumentcluster only comes on when the parking brake is applied.
CAUTION Driving for a long time with the engine mal- function indicator on may cause more dam- age to the emission control system. This could also affect fuel economy and drivabil- ity. If this indicator does not come on when the ignition key is turned to the “ON” position,have the system checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice. If the engine malfunction indicator comes on while the engine is running, avoid driving athigh speeds. During vehicle operation with the indicator on, the vehicle may not accelerate when youdepress the accelerator pedal. When the vehicle is stationary with the indi- cator on, you must depress the brake pedalmore firmly than usual since the engine idling speed is higher than usual and a vehi- cle with a CVT or a Twin Clutch SST has astronger tendency to creep forward.
NOTE
 Do not disconnect the battery cable when the engine malfunction indicator (“SERVICE ENGINE SOON” or “Check engine light”) is on. The engine electronic control module storescritical OBD information (especially exhaust emission data), which may be lost if the bat- tery cable is disconnected while the enginemalfunction indicator is on. This will make it difficult to diagnose the cause of future prob- lems.

Be sure that the parking brake is firmly set when parked and that the selector lever (CVT) or gearshift lever (Twin Clutch SST) is in the “P” (PARK) position.When parking on a hill, it is important to set the parking brake before moving the selector lever (CVT) or gearshift lever (Twin ClutchSST) to the “P” (PARK) position. This pre-vents loading the parking brake against the transaxle gear. When this happens, it is diffi- cult to move the selector lever (CVT) or gear-shift lever (Twin Clutch SST) out of the “P” (PARK) position. Never leave the engi

take a short sleep/rest. Also, never leave theengine running in a closed or poorly venti- lated place.
Your front bumper can be damaged if you scrape it over curbs or parking stop blocks.Be careful when traveling up or down steep slopes where your bumper can scrape the road. When leaving the vehicle unattended, always carry the key and lock all doors.Always try to park your vehicle in a well lit area.

Where you park
WA R N I N G Do not park your vehicle in areas where combustible materials such as dry grass or leaves can come in contact with a hotexhaust, since a fire could occur.

Place the gearshift lever in the “Neutral” position. Turn the ignition switch to the “ACC” posi-tion and secure the steering wheel in a straight-ahead position with a rope or tie- down strap. Never place the ignition switch inthe “LOCK” position when towing.
Release the parking brake. Place the gearshift lever in the “Neutral” position (manual transaxle) or the selectorlever in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position (CVT).

ive vehicles with the
front or rear wheels on the ground (Type B or Type C) as illustrated. This could result inthe driving system damage or vehicle may jump at the carriage. If you tow all-wheel drive vehicles, use TypeD or Type E equipment. Do not tow continuously variable transmis- sion (CVT) vehicles with the driving wheels on the ground (Type B) as illustrated. If the vehicle is towed like this, the continuouslyvariable transmission (CVT) fluid may not reach all parts of the transmission, thus dam- aging it.If you tow CVT vehicles, use Type C, D or E equipment. If the manual transaxle is malfunctioning or damaged, transport the vehicle with the driv- ing wheels on a carriage (Type C, D or E) as illustrated.
 [For front-wheel drive vehicle equipped with the active stability control (ASC)] If the vehicle is towed with the ignition switch in the “ON” position and only the front wheels or only the rear wheels raisedoff the ground, the ASC may operate, result- ing in an accident. When towing the vehicle with only the front wheels or only the rearwheels raised, keep the ignition switch in the “LOCK” or “ACC” position. [For vehicle equipped with the Electronically controlled 4WD system] Even in “2WD” mode, the vehicle cannot betowed with the front or the rear wheels on the ground.

To reduce the possibility of catalytic con- verter damage:  Use UNLEADED GASOLINE ONLY of the type of recommended in “Fuel selec- tion”.  Do not drive with an extremely low fuel level. Running out of gas could damage the catalytic converter.  Do not try to start the engine by pushing or towing the vehicle. If the battery is weak or run down, use jumper cables to properly start the engine.
 Do not idle the engine with any spark plug wires disconnected or removed, such as when performing diagnostic tests.  Do not idle the engine for a long time if it is idling roughly or otherwise obviously malfunctioning.  To prevent the catalytic converter from being damaged from unburned gas, do not race the engine when turning off the igni- tion switch.  Stop driving the vehicle if you think the performance is less than normal, the engine is running oddly or there is any other engine trouble, such as with theignition, etc. If you
are not able to stop
driving immediately, slow down and drive for only a short time. Have an inspectionmade by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice as soon as possible.  In unusual situations involving major engine problems, a burning odor may indicate severe and abnormal catalyticconverter overheating. If this occurs, stop in a safe place, shut the engine off and let the vehicle cool. Once the engine is cool,immediately take your vehicle to a dealer or a repair facility of your choice for ser- vice.

Check the wiper blades occasionally. Cleanthem regularly to remove deposits of salt androad film. Use a sponge or cloth and a mild detergent or non-abrasive cleaner to clean the blades and glass areas.Replace the blades if they continue to streak or smear. If the blades are frozen to the windshield or rear window, do not operate the wipers until the ice has melted and the blades are freed,otherwise the wiper motor may be damaged.

The maintenance services listed in the “WARRANTY AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL” must be performed at the times or mileages listed to keep the emission-con-trol system working properly. These, and allthe other “general” maintenance services listed in this manual, need to be performed to keep your vehicle running properly and reli-ably. You may need more frequent maintenance if you drive your vehicle in harsh conditions such as dusty areas or
do a lot of start-and-
stop driving. To be sure the emission-control system works properly, have your vehicle inspected and maintained by an authorized MitsubishiMotors dealer or a repair facility of your choice following the schedule in the “WAR- RANTY AND MAINTENANCE MAN-UAL”. You should also have an inspection and ser- vice any time you suspect a malfunction.
