Fuel selection
General information 3-3
3
Do not operate your vehicle on gasoline con- taining methanol (wood alcohol). Using thistype of alcohol could adversely affect the vehicle’s performance and damage critical parts of the vehicle’s fuel system. Many areas of the country require the use of cleaner burning fuel referred to as “Reformu- lated Gasoline”.Reformulated gasoline contains oxygenates and is specially blended to reduce vehicle emissions and improve air quality.Mitsubishi Motors Cor
poration strongly sup-
ports the use of reformulated gasoline. Prop- erly blended reformulated gasoline has noadverse effect on vehicle performance or the durability of the engine and fuel system. MMT is a manganese-containing metallic additive that is blended into some gasolinesto increase the octane number. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation recommends using gasolines without MMT.
Use of gasolines blended with MMT may adversely affect performance, and cause the malfunction indicator on your instrument panel to come on. If this happens, contact anauthorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice for assistance. Your vehicle may have been designed to sat- isfy California’s low-emission regulations based on clean-burning low-sulfur gasoline. Gasoline sold in parts of the country otherthan California is allowed to have a higher sulfur content. Using such gasoline could adversely affect the vehicle’s catalytic con-verter and cause the engine malfunction indi- cator (“SERVICE ENGINE SOON” or “Check engine light”) to come on. Illumina-tion of this indicator while you are using high-sulfur gasoline does not necessarily mean the vehicle’s emis
sion-control system is
malfunctioning. Your authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer may suggest you try using a different, lower-sulfur brand of unleaded gas-oline to determine whether the problem is fuel-related.
Methanol Reformulated gasoline MMT (methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl)
Sulfur in gasoline
NOTE
Poor-quality gasoline can cause problems such as poor starting,
stalling during idling,
abnormal engine noise, and poor accelera- tion. If you experience any of these prob- lems, try using a different brand of gasoline. If the engine malfunction indicator (“SER- VICE ENGINE SOON” or “Check engine light”) flashes, have the vehicle inspected assoon as possible by the nearest authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice. Repeatedly driving short distances at low speeds can cause deposits to form in the fuelsystem and engine, resulting in poor starting and poor acceleration. If these problems occur, you are advised to add a detergentadditive to the gasoline when you refuel the vehicle. The additive will remove the depos- its, thereby returning the engine to a normalcondition. Be sure to use a Mitsubishi Motors Genuine cleaning additive. Using an unsuitable additive could make the enginemalfunction. For details, please contact the nearest authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.

4. While filling with fuel, store the cap in the cap holder located on the inside of the fueltank filler door.
5. To fill with fuel correctly depends mainly on correct handling of the fuel filler noz- zle. Do not tilt the nozzle. Insert the noz- zle in the tank port as far as it will go. 6. When the nozzle stops automatically, do not attempt to add more fuel. 7. To close, turn the fuel tank filler cap slowly clockwise until you hear clickingsounds, then gently push the fuel tank filler door closed.

This vehicle should not be modified with non-Mitsubishi Motors genuine parts. Mit- subishi Motors designs and manufactures high quality vehicles
with an emphasis on
safety and durability. Modifications using non-Mitsubishi Motors genuine parts may affect the performance, safety and/or durabil-
WA R N I N G Since the fuel system may be under pres- sure, remove the fuel tank filler cap slowly. This relieves any pressure or vac- uum that might have built up in the fuel tank. If the cap is venting vapor or if youhear a hissing sound, wait until it stops before removing the cap. Otherwise, fuel may spray out, injuring you or others.
CAUTION Your vehicle can only be operated using unleaded gasoline. Serious engine and cata- lytic converter damage will result if leaded gasoline is used.CAUTION To avoid fuel spillage and overfilling, do not “top-off” the fuel tank. Spilled fuel coulddiscolor, stain, or crack the vehicle’s paint- work. If fuel spills on the paintwork, wipe it off with a soft cloth.WA R N I N G Make sure the fuel cap is securely closed. If the fuel cap is loose, fuel could leak, resulting in a fire.
CAUTION If you need to replace the fuel tank filler cap, use only the cap specified for your model vehicle. NOTE
If the fuel tank filler
cap is not tight while
driving, the engine malfunction indicator (“SERVICE ENGINE SOON” or “Check engine light”) may come on when theonboard diagnostic (OBD) system performs a self check. Always tighten the fuel tank filler cap untilyou hear clicking sounds. The indicator will go off after driving several times. If the indicator does not go off, con-tact your authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice as soon as possible.

Use the following procedure to test the sys- tem:
1. Lower the driver’s window. 2. Arm the system as explained in “Armed stage”. 3. Make sure that the theft-alarm indicatorcomes on and flashes for approximately 20 seconds. 4. Wait a few seconds and then unlock thedriver’s side door by using the inside door lock knob and open the door. 5. Check to be sure that the horn soundsintermittently and the headlights blink onand off when the door is opened. 6. Disarm the system by unlocking all doors and the rear hatch by using the keylessentry system or the F.A.S.T.-key opera- tion.
N00510800325
The main switch located on the driver’s door can be used to operate all door windows. A window can be opened or closed by operat- ing the corresponding switch.Press the switch down to open the window, and pull up the switch to close it. If the driver’s door window switch is fullypressed down/pulled up, the driver’s door window automatically opens/closes com- pletely.
NOTE
If the UNLOCK button on the remote control transmitter, or the driver’s or front passen- ger’s door lock/unlock switch is pressedwhen all doors and the rear hatch are closed and no door is opened
within approximately
30 seconds, re-arming will automaticallyoccur. The amount of time after unlocking until the vehicle relocks automatically can be adjusted. See an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for details. Once the system has been disarmed, it can- not be rearmed except by repeating the arm-ing procedure.

NOTE
Never try to operate the main switch and sub switch in different directions at the same time. This will freeze the window in posi- tion. Operating the power windows repeatedly with the engine stopped will run down the battery. Use the window switches only whilethe engine is running. WA R N I N G Before operating the power windows, make sure that nothing can be trapped(head, hands, fingers, etc.) in the window. Never leave the vehicle with the key in the ignition switch. Never leave a child alone in the vehicle.

lever position and held stationary with the service brake. For longer waiting periods with the engine running, place the gearshift lever in the “N”(NEUTRAL) position and apply the parking brake, while holding the vehicle stationary with the service brake.Prior to moving off after having stopped the vehicle, make sure that the gearshift lever is in “D” (DRIVE) position or manual shiftposition.

To park the vehicle, first bring it to a com- plete stop, fully engage the parking brake, and then move the gearshift lever to the “P”(PARK) position.
N00541200051
If there is a problem in the Twin Clutch SST or engine electronic control module, the fol- lowing may occur. Twin Clutch SST does not shift. Vehicle cannot move. Twin Clutch SST acceleration is slow. Vehicle does not creep. “Shift shock” is large. Shifting occurs at higher engine speed. Response is slow.
If any of these occurs, perform the following procedure. The temperature of Twin Clutch SST fluid is high. Refer to “Warning display” on page 5-73 and follow the appropriate measures. There could be a malfunction in the engine electronic control module.
CAUTION Do not rev the engine unnecessarily while the vehicle is stationary. Unexpected acceler- ation may occur if the gearshift lever is in aposition other than “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL). Do not keep the vehicle in a stopped position on an uphill slope by depressing the acceler- ator pedal instead of the brake pedal. The transmission may be damaged and an accident may occur due to the following con- ditions.• The Twin Clutch SST fluid temperaturewill rise and can cause transmission dam- age.
• If the vehicle is kept in a stopped positionby depressing the accelerator pedal instead of the brake pedal, the vehicle will vibrate or the warning display will appear on the information screen in the multi-infor- mation display to alert the driver that the Twin Clutch SST fluid temperature hasrisen. After that, if the Twin Clutch SST fluid temperature rises even higher, the transmis-sion protection control will operate. If this occurs, the vehicle may suddenly reverse as if the gearshift lever was in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position and cause an accident. If the warning display appears or the transmission protection control operates, refer to “When warning display is showing” on page 5-73.

Anti-lock braking system 5-88 Features and controls
5
N00517900282
The anti-lock braking system helps prevent the wheels from lockin
g up when braking.
This helps you keep control of your vehicle and its direction.
When using the anti-lock brakes (sudden braking), steering is slightly different from normal driving conditions. Use thesteering wheel carefully. Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Even if your vehi-cle is equipped with the anti-lock braking system, leave a greater braking distance when:• Driving on gravel or snow-coveredroads. • Driving on uneven road surfaces. Operation of anti-lock braking system is not restricted to situations where brakes are applied suddenly. This system may also prevent the wheels from lockingwhen you drive over manholes, steel roadwork plates, road markings, or any uneven road surface. When the anti-lock braking system is in use, you may feel the brake pedal vibrat- ing and hear a unique sound. You mayalso feel as if the pedal resists being pressed. In this situation, simply hold the brakepedal down firmly. Do not pump the brake, which will result in reduced braking performance.
NOTE
Once the brake assist system is operational, it maintains great braking force even if the brake pedal is lightly released. To stop its operation, completely remove your foot from the brake pedal. The brake assist system may become opera- tional when the brake pedal is fullydepressed even if it has not been depressed suddenly. When the brake assist system is in use while driving, you may feel as if the depressed brake pedal is soft, the pedal moves in smallmotions in conjunction with the operation noise, or the vehicle body and the steering wheel vibrate. This occurs when the brakeassist system is operating normally and does not indicate faulty operation. Continue to depress the brake pedal. You may hear an operation noise when the brake pedal is suddenly or fully depressedwhile stationary. This does not indicate a malfunction and the brake assist system is operating normally.
Anti-lock braking system
Driving hints
CAUTION The anti-lock braking system cannot prevent accidents. It is your responsibility to take safety precautions and to drive carefully. To prevent failure of the anti-lock braking system, be sure all four wheels and tires are the same size and the same type. Never install a limited-slip differential as the anti-lock braking system may not function normally. Please consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.NOTE
After your vehicle is driven a short distance after starting the engine, you will hear the sound coming from the engine compartment. These are the normal sounds the anti-lockbraking system makes when performing a self-check. It does not indicate a malfunc- tion. The anti-lock braking system can be used after the vehicle has reached a speed overapproximately 6 mph (10 km/h). It stops working when the vehicle slows below approximately 3 mph (5 km/h).
