The shift pattern below is shown on the gear- shift lever. Press the clutch pedal all the way down while shifting gears.
Press the clutch pedal all the way down and shift into 1st or “R” (Reverse) position. Then gradually release the

For the best fuel economy and performance in using your manual transaxle, upshift as listed below. At low altitude locations, shift at the vehicle speeds listed. Upshifting earlier during cruise conditions (relatively

To start

CAUTION Do not move the gearsh
ift lever into reverse
while the vehicle is moving forward; doing so will damage the transaxle. Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal because this will cause premature clutchwear or damage. Do not coast in the “N” (Neutral) position (illegal in many states). Do not use the gearshift lever as a handrest, because this can result in premature wear ofthe transaxle shift forks.NOTE
 If it is hard to shift into 1st, depress the clutch pedal a second tim
e; the shift will then
be easier.
 To shift into reverse from 5th gear, move the gearshift lever to the “N” (Neutral) position,and then shift it into reverse.

It is recommended th
at you downshift to a
lower gear when needed to maintain the desired speed, according to the table. Avoid downshifting at
too high a speed. The
engine may suffer damage.
To maintain a safe speed and prolong brake life, shift down to 2nd or 1st when descend-ing a steep hill. Downshifting is also important to avoid “lug- ging” the engine at t
oo low a speed, such as
when turning a corner or when driving up a steep hill.

 Do not use the gearshift lever as a han- drest. This can result
in premature wear of
the transaxle shift forks.
 The table above shows the maximum rec- ommended driving speed for in each gear. Do not drive near or at these speeds forprolonged periods of time.

The CVT will automatically and continuously change its gear ratio depending on road and driving conditions. This helps achievesmooth driving and excellent fuel efficiency. The transmission prevents unnecessary upshifts even when the accelerator pedal is released and ensures smooth driving.

Cruise control is an automatic speed control system that keeps a set
speed. It can be acti-
vated at speeds from about 25 mph (40 km/h). Cruise cont
rol does not work at
speeds below about 25 mph (40 km/h).
Used to turn on and off the cruise control. Used to reduce the set speed and to set the desired speed.
Used to increase the set speed and to return to the original set speed. Used to deactivate the set speed driving.

1. With the ignition switch is in “ON” posi- tion or the operation mode is in ON, press the CRUISE CONTROL ON/OFF switch (A) to turn on the cruise control. The indi-cator in the meter cluster will come on.

CAUTION When you do not wish to drive at a set speed, turn off the cruise control for safety. Do not use cruise control when driving con- ditions will not allow
you to stay at the same
speed, such as in heavy traffic or on roads that are winding, icy, snow-covered, wet,slippery, on a steep downhill slope. On vehicles equipped
with manual transaxle,
do not move the gearshift lever to the “N” (Neutral) position whil
e driving at a set
speed without depressi
ng the clutch pedal.
The engine will run too fast and might be damaged.NOTE
 Cruise control may not
be able to keep your
speed on uphills or downhills.  Your speed may decr
ease on a steep uphill.
You may use the acce
lerator pedal if you
want to stay at your set speed.
 Your speed may increase to more than the set speed on a steep downhill. You have to usethe brake to control your speed. As a result,the set speed driving is deactivated.

2. Accelerate or decele
rate to your desired
speed, then press and release the SET - switch (B) when the indicator is illumi-nated. The vehicle will then maintain the desired speed.

There are 2 ways to increase the set speed. Press and hold the RES + switch (C) while driving at the set speed, and your speed will then gradually increase.When you reach your desired speed, release the switch. Your new
cruising speed is now
set.
To increase your speed in small amounts, press the RES + switch
for less than about 1
second and release it. Each time you press the RES + switch, your vehicle will go about 1 mph (1.6 km/h) faster. While driving at the set speed, use the accel- erator pedal to reach
your desired speed and
then press the SET - switch (B) and release the switch momentarily to set a new desiredcruising speed.

Press and hold the SET - switch (B) while driving at the set speed, and your speed will slow down gradually.When you reach your desired speed, release the switch. Your new cruising speed is now set. To slow down your sp

The set speed driving can be deactivated as follows:  Press the CRUISE CONTROL ON/OFF switch (A). (Cruise control will be turnedoff.)  Press the CANCEL switch (D).  Depress the brake pedal.
The set speed driving is
deactivated automati-
cally in any of the following ways.  When you depress the clutch pedal (on vehicles equipped w
ith manual transaxle).
 When your speed slows to about 10 mph (15 km/h) or more below the set speed because of a hill, etc.  When your speed slows to about 25 mph (40 km/h) or less.
 When the active stability control (ASC) starts operating.Refer to “Active stability control (ASC)” on page 5-49.
Also, the set speed driving may be deacti- vated as follow:  When the engine speed rises and approaches the tachometer’s red zone (thered-colored part of the tachometer dial).

If the set speed driving is deactivated by the condition described in “To deactivate” on page 5-55, you can resu
me the previously set
speed by pressing the RES + switch (C) while driving at a speed of about 25 mph (40 km/h) or higher. Under either of the following conditions, however, using the sw
itch does not allow you
to resume the previously set speed. In these situations, repeat the
speed setting procedure:
 The CRUISE CONTROL ON/OFF switch is pressed.  [Except for vehicles equipped with the F. A . S . T. - k e y ] Turn the ignition switch to the “OFF” or “ACC” position. [Vehicles equipped with the F.A.S.T.-key]
