FIRING ORDER & TIMING MARKS
WARNING: On the 3.0L V6, the firing order and the spark plug
connection order on the top of the distributor do not match.
Circuits internal to the distributor cap differ from the
external spark plug wire connections. This is intentional and
is done to avoid spark plug wires crossover. See Fig. 3.

ELECTRICAL
Starters
Diamante, Eclipse, Expo/Expo LRV, Galant, Mirage, Montero,
Pickup, Precis, 3000GT
DESCRIPTION
Starter is a conventional 12-volt, 4-pole brush-type motor,
with direct or gear reduction drive. The starter-mounted solenoid
shifts overrunning clutch and pinion into flywheel when starter is
energized.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
NOTE: See the TROUBLE SHOOTING - BASIC PROCEDURES article
in the GENERAL TROUBLE SHOOTING section.
NO LOAD TEST
CAUTION: Perform tests in less than 10 seconds to prevent coil
damage.
1) Install starter in soft-jawed vise. Connect starter in
series with a fully charged 12-volt battery. Connect a 100-amp ammeter
and carbon pile rheostat in series with positive battery post and
starter motor terminal. See Fig. 1.
2) Install voltmeter across starter motor. Adjust carbon pile
rheostat to full resistance. Connect cable from starter motor body to
negative battery terminal. Adjust carbon pile rheostat to proper test
voltage. See STARTER NO LOAD SPECIFICATIONS table.
3) Note that maximum amperage is within specification and
starter rotates smoothly. See STARTER NO LOAD SPECIFICATIONS table.

PULL-IN COIL TEST
CAUTION: Perform tests in less than 10 seconds to prevent coil
damage.
1) Disconnect field coil wire from terminal "M" at starter
solenoid. See Fig. 2. Connect jumper wire between positive battery
terminal of 12-volt battery and terminal "S" of solenoid.
2) Connect a second jumper wire from negative battery
terminal and touch terminal "M" of starter solenoid. See Fig. 2. If
solenoid plunger moves inward, solenoid is good. If not, replace
solenoid.

Lubricate ball joint with SAE J310 NLGI No. 2 grease. Apply
semi-drying sealant to ball joint grooves. Reverse removal procedure
to complete installation. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE
SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article.
NOTE: On Ram-50 and Pickup, replace upper control arm if ball
joint is defective.
UPPER BALL JOINT R & I (MONTERO)
REMOVAL
Remove snap ring and dust cover together from ball joint. See
Fig. 1 . Use Ball Joint Remover/Installer (MB990799-01 and MB990800-01)
and Clamp (MB990840-01) to press ball joint from control arm. Tighten
clamp to remove ball joint.
INSTALLATION
1) Before installing, align reference mark on ball joint with
center of control arm. Using bushing remover/installers, install ball
joint in control arm. See Fig. 1.
2) Install snap ring on ball joint. Lubricate ball joint with
SAE J310 NLGI No. 2 grease. Apply semi-drying sealant to ball joint
grooves. Install new dust cover and ring.
AUTOMATIC TYPE LOCKING HUB R & I
REMOVAL
1) Place hub must in the FREE position by placing transfer
case lever in 2H position and moving vehicle in Reverse approximately
4-6 feet.
2) Remove cover from locking hub. If necessary, wrap shop
towel around cover and use an oil filter wrench to loosen cover. Raise
and support vehicle. Remove wheel assembly.
3) Using snap ring pliers, remove snap ring and shim from end
of drive axle. See Fig. 2. Using hexagonal wrench, remove locking hub
retaining bolts. Remove locking hub assembly.

POWER STEERING OIL PRESSURE SWITCH
1) Power steering oil pressure switch is mounted on power
steering pump. Disconnect single wire connector at switch. Start
engine.
2) Connect ohmmeter between switch terminal and ground. If
continuity is present with steering wheel in straight-ahead position,
replace switch. If continuity is not present while turning steering
wheel, perform POWER STEERING IDLE-UP SYSTEM TEST. See IDLE-UP SYSTEMS
under IDLE CONTROL SYSTEM.
THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR
1) TPS is mounted to throttle body, at end of throttle shaft.
Disconnect TPS connector. See Fig. 6. Using ohmmeter, measure total
resistance between TPS connector terminals as specified in TPS
CONNECTOR TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION table. If resistance is not 3500-
6500 ohms, replace TPS.
2) Using an analog (needle-type) ohmmeter, measure variable
resistance between TPS connector terminals as specified in TPS
CONNECTOR TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION table.
3) Operate throttle valve from closed to wide open throttle.
If rate of resistance does not change smoothly within 3500-6500 ohms
throughout range of throttle valve movement, replace TPS.

Air Conditioner Switch
When A/C is turned on, signal is sent to ECU. With engine at
idle, ECU increases idle speed through Idle Speed Control (ISC) motor.\
Airflow Sensor
Incorporated in airflow sensor assembly, airflow sensor is a
Karmen Vortex-type sensor which measures intake airflow rate.
Intake air flows through tunnel in airflow sensor assembly.
Airflow sensor transmits radio frequency signals across direction of
incoming airflow, downstream of vortex. Intake air encounters vortex,
causing turbulence in tunnel.
Turbulence disrupts radio frequency, causing variations in
transmission. Airflow sensor converts frequency transmitted into a
proportionate electrical signal which is sent to ECU.
Airflow Sensor Assembly
Mounted inside air cleaner, incorporates airflow sensor,
atmospheric pressure sensor and intake air temperature sensor.
Atmospheric (Barometric) Pressure Sensor
Incorporated in the airflow sensor assembly, converts
atmospheric pressure to electrical signal which is sent to ECU. ECU
adjusts air/fuel ratio and ignition timing according to altitude.
Coolant Temperature Sensor
Converts coolant temperature to electrical signal for use by
ECU. ECU uses coolant temperature information for controlling fuel
enrichment when engine is cold.
Crankshaft Angle & TDC Sensor Assembly
Assembly is located in distributor on SOHC engines. On DOHC
engines, which use Direct (or Distributorless) Ignition System (DIS)\
,
assembly is separate unit mounted in place of distributor. Assembly
consists of triggering disc (mounted on shaft) and stationary optical
sensing unit. Camshaft drives shaft, triggering optical sensing unit.
ECU determines crank angle and TDC based on signals received from
optical sensing unit.
Detonation Sensor (Turbo Only)
Located in cylinder block, senses engine vibration during
detonation (knock). Sensor converts vibration into electrical signal.
ECU retards ignition timing based on this signal.
Engine Speed (Tach Signal)
ECU uses ignition coil tach signal to determine engine speed.
Idle Position Switch
On all DOHC engines and Sigma 3.0L, idle position switch is
separate switch mounted on throttle body. On all other models, idle
position switch is incorporated in ISC motor or throttle position
sensor, depending on vehicle application. When throttle valve is
closed, switch is activated. When throttle valve is at any other
position, switch is deactivated. This input from idle position switch
is used by ECU for controlling fuel delivery time during deceleration.
Ignition Timing Adjustment Terminal
Used for adjusting base ignition timing. When terminal is
grounded, ECU timing control function is by-passed, allowing base
timing to be adjusted.

motor to increase idle speed. To prevent A/C compressor from switching
on before idle speed has increased, ECU momentarily opens A/C relay
circuit.
Idle Speed Control (ISC) Motor
Controls pintle-type air valve (DOHC engines) or throttle
plate angle (SOHC engines) to regulate volume of intake air at idle.
During start mode, ECU controls idle intake air volume
according to coolant temperature input. After starting, with idle
position switch activated (throttle closed), fast idle speed is
controlled by ISC motor and fast idle air control valve (if equipped).\
When idle switch is deactivated (throttle open), ISC motor
moves to a preset position in accordance with coolant temperature
input.
When automatic transmission (if equipped) is shifted from
Neutral to Drive, A/C is turned on or power steering pressure reaches
a preset value, ECU signals ISC motor to increase engine RPM.
Fast Idle Air Control Valve
Some models use a coolant temperature-sensitive fast idle air
control valve, located on throttle body, to admit additional intake
air volume during engine warm-up. Control valve closes as temperature
increases, restricting by-pass airflow rate. At engine warm-up, valve
closes completely.
IGNITION SYSTEMS
DIRECT IGNITION SYSTEM (DIS) - DOHC ENGINES
Ignition system is a 2-coil, distributorless ignition system.
Crankshaft angle and TDC sensor assembly, mounted in place of
distributor, are optically controlled.
Power Transistors & Ignition Coils
Based on crankshaft angle and TDC sensor inputs, ECU controls
timing and directly activates each power transistor to fire coils.
Power transistor "A" controls primary current of ignition coil "A" to
fire spark plugs on cylinders No. 1 and 4 at the same time. Power
transistor "B" controls primary current of ignition coil "B" to fire
spark plugs on cylinders No. 2 and 3 at the same time.
Although each coil fires 2 plugs at the same time, ignition
takes place in only one cylinder since the other cylinder is on its
exhaust stroke when plug fires.
ELECTRONIC IGNITION SYSTEM - SOHC ENGINES
Mitsubishi breakerless electronic ignition system uses a disc
and optical sensing unit to trigger power transistor.
Power Transistor & Ignition Coil
Power transistor is mounted inside distributor with disc and
optical sensing unit. When ignition is on, ignition coil primary
circuit is energized. As distributor shaft rotates, disc rotates,
triggering optical sensing unit. ECU receives signals from optical
sensing unit. Signals are converted and sent to power transistor,
interrupting primary current flow and inducing secondary voltage.
IGNITION TIMING CONTROL SYSTEM
Ignition timing is controlled by ECU. ECU adjusts timing
based upon various conditions, such as engine temperature, altitude
and detonation (turbo vehicles only).

the types of injector circuits that your noid lights are designed for.
There are three. They are:
* Systems with a voltage controlled injector driver. Another
way to say it: The noid light is designed for a circuit with
a "high" resistance injector (generally 12 ohms or above).
* Systems with a current controlled injector driver. Another
way to say it: The noid light is designed for a circuit with
a low resistance injector (generally less than 12 ohms)
without an external injector resistor.
* Systems with a voltage controlled injector driver and an
external injector resistor. Another way of saying it: The
noid light is designed for a circuit with a low resistance
injector (generally less than 12 ohms) and an external
injector resistor.
NOTE: Some noid lights can meet both the second and third
categories simultaneously.
If you are not sure which type of circuit your noid light is
designed for, plug it into a known good car and check out the results.
If it flashes normally during cranking, determine the circuit type by
finding out injector resistance and if an external injector resistor
is used. You now know enough to identify the type of injector circuit.
Label the noid light appropriately.
Next time you need to use a noid light for diagnosis,
determine what type of injector circuit you are dealing with and
select the appropriate noid light.
Of course, if you suspect a no-pulse condition you could plug
in any one whose connector fit without fear of misdiagnosis. This is
because it is unimportant if the flashing light is dim or bright. It
is only important that it flashes.
In any cases of doubt regarding the use of a noid light, a
lab scope will overcome all inherent weaknesses.
OVERVIEW OF DVOM
A DVOM is typically used to check injector resistance and
available voltage at the injector. Some techs also use it check
injector on-time either with a built-in feature or by using the
dwell/duty function.
There are situations where the DVOM performs these checks
dependably, and other situations where it can deceive you. It is
important to be aware of these strengths and weaknesses. We will cover
the topics above in the following text.
Checking Injector Resistance
If a short in an injector coil winding is constant, an
ohmmeter will accurately identify the lower resistance. The same is
true with an open winding. Unfortunately, an intermittent short is an
exception. A faulty injector with an intermittent short will show
"good" if the ohmmeter cannot force the short to occur during testing.
Alcohol in fuel typically causes an intermittent short,
happening only when the injector coil is hot and loaded by a current
high enough to jump the air gap between two bare windings or to break
down any oxides that may have formed between them.
When you measure resistance with an ohmmeter, you are only
applying a small current of a few milliamps. This is nowhere near
enough to load the coil sufficiently to detect most problems. As a
result, most resistance checks identify intermittently shorted
injectors as being normal.
There are two methods to get around this limitation. The
first is to purchase an tool that checks injector coil windings under

3800 engines were suffering from exactly this. The point is that a
lack of detail could cause misdiagnosis.
As you might have guessed, a lab scope would not miss this.

THE TWO TYPES OF INJECTOR DRIVERS
OVERVIEW
There are two types of transistor driver circuits used to
operate electric fuel injectors: voltage controlled and current
controlled. The voltage controlled type is sometimes called a
"saturated switch" driver, while the current controlled type is
sometimes known as a "peak and hold" driver.
The basic difference between the two is the total resistance
of the injector circuit. Roughly speaking, if a particular leg in an
injector circuit has total resistance of 12 or more ohms, a voltage
control driver is used. If less than 12 ohms, a current control driver
is used.
It is a question of what is going to do the job of limiting
the current flow in the injector circuit; the inherent "high"
resistance in the injector circuit, or the transistor driver. Without
some form of control, the current flow through the injector would
cause the solenoid coil to overheat and result in a damaged injector.
VOLTAGE CONTROLLED CIRCUIT ("SATURATED SWITCH")
The voltage controlled driver inside the computer operates
much like a simple switch because it does not need to worry about
limiting current flow. Recall, this driver typically requires injector
circuits with a total leg resistance of 12 or more ohms.
The driver is either ON, closing/completing the circuit
(eliminating the voltage-drop), or OFF, opening the circuit (causing \
a
total voltage drop).
Some manufacturers call it a "saturated switch" driver. This
is because when switched ON, the driver allows the magnetic field in
the injector to build to saturation. This is the same "saturation"
property that you are familiar with for an ignition coil.
There are two ways "high" resistance can be built into an
injector circuit to limit current flow. One method uses an external
solenoid resistor and a low resistance injector, while the other uses
a high resistance injector without the solenoid resistor. See the left
side of Fig. 1.
In terms of injection opening time, the external resistor
voltage controlled circuit is somewhat faster than the voltage
controlled high resistance injector circuit. The trend, however, seems
to be moving toward use of this latter type of circuit due to its
lower cost and reliability. The ECU can compensate for slower opening

times by increasing injector pulse width accordingly.
NOTE: Never apply battery voltage directly across a low resistance
injector. This will cause injector damage from solenoid coil
overheating.

CURRENT CONTROLLED CIRCUIT ("PEAK & HOLD")
The current controlled driver inside the computer is more
complex than a voltage controlled driver because as the name implies,
it has to limit current flow in addition to its ON-OFF switching
function. Recall, this driver typically requires injector circuits
with a total leg resistance of less than 12 ohms.
Once the driver is turned ON, it will not limit current flow
until enough time has passed for the injector pintle to open. This
period is preset by the particular manufacturer/system based on the
amount of current flow needed to open their injector. This is
typically between two and six amps. Some manufacturers refer to this
