After operating the vehicle in rough road con- ditions, be sure to perform the followinginspection and maintenance procedures:  Check that the vehicle has not been dam- aged by rocks, gravel, etc.  Carefully wash the
vehicle with water.
Drive the vehicle slowly while lightly depressing the brake pedal in order to dryout the brakes. If the brakes still do not function properly, contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil-ity of your choice as
soon as possible to
have the brakes checked.  Remove the inse
cts, dried grass, etc. clog-
ging the radiator core.  After driving through water, check the engine, transaxle and
differential oil. If
the oil or grease is milky or cloudy because of water c
ontamination, it must
be replaced with new oil.  Check the inside of the vehicle. If water entry is found, dry the carpet etc. Inspect the headlights. If water is in the headlight housing, have
it drained at an
authorized Mitsubishi
Motors dealer or a
repair facility of your choice.

Since the driving torque can be applied to thefour wheels, the driving performance of the vehicle when operating in 4-wheel drive is greatly affected by the condition of the tires.
Pay close attention to the tires.  Install only the specified tires on all wheels. Refer to “Tires and wheels” onpage 11-7.  Be sure all four tire
s and wheels are the
same size
and type.
When it is necessary to replace any of the tires or wheels, replace all four.  All tires should be rotated before the wear difference between the
front and rear tires
is recognizable.
Good vehicle performance cannot be expected if there is a difference in wear between tires. Refer to “Tire rotation” on page 9-20.  Check the tire inflati
on pressure regularly.
CAUTIONNever drive through water that is deep enough to cover wheel hubs, axles or exhaustpipe. Do not change th
e selector lever posi-
tion while driving through water. Frequent driving through water can adversely affect the life
span of the vehicle;
consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair faci
lity of your choice and
take the necessary measures to prepare,inspect, and repair the vehicle. After driving through wa
ter, apply the brakes
to be sure they are functioning properly. If the brakes are wet and not functioning prop- erly, dry them out by
driving slowly while
lightly depressing the
brake pedal. Inspect
each part of the vehicle carefully.

Your vehicle is equipped with power brakes for more braking force with less brake pedal effort.Your brakes are designed to operate at full capacity, even if the power assist is not being used.If the power assist is not being used, the effort needed to press the brake pedal is greater. If you should lose the power assist for somereason, the brakes will still work. If the power brake unit or either of the two brake hydraulic systems stops working prop-erly, the rest of the brake system will still work, but the vehicle will not slow down as quickly.You will know this has happened if you find you need to press the brake down farther, or harder when slowing down or stopping, or ifthe brake warning light and the warning dis- play in the multi-information display come on.

CAUTION Do not tow 4-wheel drive vehicles with the front or rear wheels on the ground (Type A or Type B) as illustrate

damage to the drivetrain, or unstable towing.If you tow 4-wheel drive vehicles, use TypeC or Type D equipment. Even in “4WD ECO” (Electronically con- trolled 4WD) or “AWC ECO” (S-AWC) drive mode, the vehicle cannot be towed with the front or the rear wheels on theground.
Jacking up a 4-wheel drive vehicle
WA R N I N G Do not crank the engine while jacking up the vehicle. The tire on the ground may turn and thevehicle may roll off the jack.

WA R N I N G Do not leave any objects near the brake pedal or let a floor mat slide under it;doing so could prevent the full pedal stroke that would be necessary in an emergency. Make sure that the pedal canbe operated freely at all times. Make sure the floor mat is securely held in place.
CAUTION It is important not to drive the vehicle with your foot resting on the brake pedal whenbraking is not required.
This practice can
result in very high brake temperatures, pre- mature lining wear, a
nd possible damage to
the brakes.

 Do not overly rely on the brake auto hold system. On steep slope, depress the brakepedal firmly because the system may not hold the vehicle stationary. Never leave the vehicle while it is being stopped by the brake auto hold system. When leaving the vehi
cle, apply the park-
ing brake and move th
e selector lever to
the “P” (PARK) position. Do not use brake auto hold system when driving on slippery roads. The system may not hold the vehicle stationary and couldresult in an accident. NOTE

When the vehicle is
stopped by depressing
the brake pedal with the selector lever in any position other than “P” (PARK) or “R”and the vehicle will be
held stationary.
The brake auto hold indicator light in the instrument cluster will come on while thesystem activates.
NOTE
 When the brake auto hold system cannot be used, a buzzer will sound and the messagewill appear on the information screen in themulti information display.  If the brake auto hold
switch is pressed with
the driver’s seat belt is not fastened, a buzzer will sound and the me
ssage will appear on
the information screen in the multi informa- tion display.  If any of the following occur while the sys- tem is standby state, the brake auto hold sys-tem will be turned off automatically and the indicator light on the switch goes off. A buzzer will sound

belt is unfastened.
• When the driver’s door is opened.
• When there is a malfunction in the system  If keeping pressing the brake auto hold switch after setting the brake auto hold to ON (stand by), the brake auto hold willreturn to OFF as a protection function is operated. After returning to OFF, the brake auto holdwill not be switched to ON (Stand by) even if the brake auto hold switch is pressed. To set the brake auto hold to ON, restart the engineand press the brake auto hold switch again.NOTE

Anti-lock braking system

The anti-lock braking system helps prevent the wheels from locking up when braking.This helps maintain vehicle drivability and steering wheel handling.  When using the anti-lock brakes (sudden braking), steering is slightly different from normal driving conditions. Use the steering wheel carefully. Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Even if your vehi- cle is equipped with
the anti-lock braking
system, leave a greater braking distance when: • Driving on gravel or snow-coveredroads. • Driving on uneven road surfaces.
 Operation of anti-lock braking system is not restricted situations where brakes areapplied suddenly. This system may also prevent the wheels from locking when you drive over manholes, steel roadworkplates, road markings
, or any uneven road
surface.  When the anti-lock braking system is in use, you may feel the brake pedal vibrat- ing and hear a unique sound. It may also feel as if the pedal
resists being pressed.
In this situation, si
mply hold the brake
pedal down firmly. Do not pump thebrake, which will result in reduced braking performance.
CAUTION The brake assist system is not a device designed to exercise
braking force greater
than its capacity. Make sure to always keep asufficient distance be
tween your vehicle and
a vehicle in front of
you without relying too
much on the brake assist system.NOTE
 Once the brake assist system is operational, it maintains great braking force even if the brake pedal is lightly released. To stop its operation, completely removeyour foot from the brake pedal.  The brake assist system may become opera- tional when the brake pedal is fully depressed even if it
has not been depressed
suddenly.  When the brake assist system is in use while driving, you may feel as if the depressedbrake pedal is soft, the pedal moves in small motions in conjunction with the operation noise, or the vehicle body and the steeringwheel vibrate. This occurs when the brake assist system is ope
rating normally and does
not indicate faulty
operation. Continue to
depress the brake pedal.  You may hear an operation noise when the brake pedal is suddenl
y or fully depressed
while stationary. This does not indicate a malfunction and the brake assist system is operating normally.
 When the anti-lock brake system warning light or only active st
ability control warning
light illuminate, the brake assist system innot functioning.

Under normal conditions, the anti-lock brak-ing system warning light only comes on when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON”and goes off a few seconds later.

vated to prevent overheating of the power steering system. This f
unction will make the
steering wheel graduall
y harder to turn. In
this event, limit your turning of the steering wheel for a while. When the system hascooled down, the steering effort will return to normal.  If you turn the steering wheel while the vehi- cle is stationary with the headlights on, the headlights may become
dim. This behavior
is not abnormal. The he
adlights will return to
their original brightness after a short while.

responsibillty to drive carefully, This means taking into account the traffic, road and envi- ronmental conditions. Be sure to use the same specified type and size of tire on all four
wheels. Otherwise, the
ASC may not work properly. Do not install any aftermarket limited slip differential (LSD) on your vehicle. The ASC may stop functioning properly.NOTE
 An operation noise may be emitted from the engine compartment in the following situa-tions. The sound is associated with checkingthe operations of the ASC. At this time, you may feel a shock from the brake pedal if you depress it. These do not
indicate a malfunc-
tion. • When the ignition switch is set to the “ON” position. • When the vehicle is driven for a while after the engine is turned on.

ed from three levels.
If the vehicle in front decelerates, the ACC will automatically apply limited braking to maintain the distance, a
nd if the front vehicle
then accelerates, the ACC will automatically accelerate your vehicle up to the set speed. If your vehicle is approa
ching too close to the
front vehicle, a buzzer will sound and a warn- ing is shown in the multi information display.When the ACC detects no vehicle ahead, the set speed will be maintained. Conventional cruise cont

Cruise control switch

1- “ACC ON/OFF” switch
Used to turn on and off the ACC sys-tem.
2- “SET -” switch
Used to set a desired speed or to reducethe set speed.
3- “RES +” switch
Used to resume the control function after cancelling the ACC or the conven-tional cruise control. Also used to increase the set speed.
4- “CANCEL” switch
Used to cancel the control function of the ACC or the cruise control.
5- ACC distance switch
Used to set or change the following dis- tance between your
vehicle and a vehi-
cle in front.NOTE
 Operate the individual
switches correctly and
one after another. The ACC may be turned off or its control function may be canc
elled if two or more
switches are pressed concurrently
