designed primarily for
use on pavement. But its unique 4 -wheel
drive system allows
you to occasionally travel on unpaved roads, to campgrounds, picnic
sites, and similar
locations.Not only does this ensure better handling on dry, paved roads but al
so permits better trac-
tion when driving on slippery, wet or snow- covered roads and when moving out of mud.But it is not suitable for heavy off road use or towing in rough conditions. It is particularly im
portant to note that 4-
wheel drive may not gi
ve sufficient hill
climbing ability and e
ngine braking on steep
slopes. You should try to avoid driving onsteep slopes. Also, you must exercise caution when driving on sand and mud and when driving through water because sufficie
nt traction may not be
available in certain circumstances.Please avoid driving the vehicle through areas where the tires may get stuck in deep sand or mud.

 If the drive mode is switched in any mode after the drive mode is switched in “AWCECO”, the drive mode will not be changed even if the ECO mode switch is switched OFF.

When turning a sharp corner in “4WD LOCK” (Electronically
controlled 4WD) or
“LOCK” (S-AWC) position at low speed, a slight difference in
steering may be experi-
enced similar to feeling as if the brakes wereapplied. This is calle
d tight corner braking
and results from each of the four tires being at a different distance from the corner. The phe-nomenon is typical of 4-
wheel drive vehicles.
If this occurs, either straighten out the steer- ing wheel or change to another mode. Set the drive mode-selector to “4WD AUTO”, “4WD LOCK” (Electronically con-trolled 4WD) or “SNOW” (S-AWC) in accor- dance with the road conditions, and then gradually depress the accelerator pedal for asmooth start.

Turning sharp corners On snowy or icy roads
NOTE
 The use of snow tires is recommended.  Maintain a safe distan
ce between vehicles,
avoid sudden braking, and use engine brak- ing (downshifting).CAUTION Avoid sudden braking,
sudden acceleration
and sharp turning. Skidding occurs and con-trol of the vehicl
e could be lost.
Driving on sandy or muddy roads
CAUTION Do not force the vehicle or drive recklessly on sandy surfaces. In comparison with nor- mal road surfaces, th
e engine and other
drive-system components are put underexcessive strain when driving on such a sur- face. This could lead to accidents.
 If any of the following conditions occur while the vehicle is
being driven, immedi-
ately park your vehicle
in a safe place and
follow these procedures:• If the engine coolan

flashes on the information screen in the multi-information di
splay or the engine

Your vehicle may not provide sufficient hill climbing ability and engine braking on steep slope. Avoid driving on steep slopes even though the vehicle is an 4-wheel drive vehi-cle.

 Check that the vehicle has not been dam- aged by rocks, gravel, etc. Carefully wash the

depressing the brake pedal in order to dryout the brakes. If the brakes still do not function properly, contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil-ity of your choice as soon as possible to have the brakes checked.  Remove the insects, dr

ging the radiator core.  After driving through water, check the engine, transaxle and
differential oil. If
the oil or grease is milky or cloudy because of water cont
amination, it must
be replaced with new oil.  Check the inside of the vehicle. If water entry is found, dry the carpet etc. Inspect the headlights. If water is in the headlight housing, have it drained at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or arepair facility of your choice.
NOTE
 Avoid sudden braking,
sudden acceleration
and sharp turning; such operations couldresult in the vehicle becoming stuck.  If the vehicle become
s stuck in sandy or
muddy roads, it can often be moved with arocking motion. Move the selector lever alternately between the “D” (DRIVE) and “R” (REVERSE) positi
ons while pressing

celerator pedal.
 Driving on rough road can cause rust on the vehicle; wash the vehi

as possible after such use.
Climbing/descending sharp grades Driving through water
CAUTION Never drive through water that is deep enough to cover wheel hubs, axles or exhaust pipe. Do not change th
e selector lever posi-
tion while driving through water. Frequent driving through water can adversely affect the life
span of the vehicle;
consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facili
ty of your choice and
take the necessary measures to prepare,inspect, and repair the vehicle. After driving through water, apply the brakes to be sure they are
functioning properly. If
the brakes are wet a
nd not functioning prop-
erly, dry them out by driving slowly whilelightly depressing the brake pedal. Inspect each part of the vehicle carefully.

Since the driving torque can be applied to the four wheels, the driving performance of the vehicle when operating in 4-wheel drive is greatly affected by the condition of the tires. Pay close attention to the tires. Install only the specified tires on all wheels. Refer to “Tires and wheels” onpage 11-7.  Be sure all four tires and wheels are the same size and type.When it is necessary to replace any of the tires or wheels, replace all four.  All tires should be ro

damage to the drivetrain, or unstable towing. If you tow 4-wheel drive vehicles, use Type C or Type D equipment. Even in “4WD ECO” (Electronically con- trolled 4WD) or “AWC ECO” (S-AWC)drive mode, the vehicle cannot be towed with the front or the rear wheels on the ground.
Jacking up a 4-wheel drive vehicle

If you should lose the power assist for some reason, the brakes will still work. If the power brake unit or either of the twobrake hydraulic systems stops working prop- erly, the rest of the brake system will still work, but the vehicle
will not slow down as

Make sure that the pedal can be operated freely at all times. Make surethe floor mat is securely held in place.CAUTION It is important not to drive the vehicle with your foot resting on the brake pedal when braking is not required. This practice can result in very high brake temperatures, pre-mature lining wear, a
nd possible damage to
the brakes.
Power brakes

Keep the engine running whenever your vehicle is in motion. If you turn off the engine while driving, the power brakebooster will stop wo

drivers who cannot depress the brake pedal firmly such as in em
ergency stop situations
and provides greater braking force. If the brake pedal is depressed suddenly, the brakes will be applied
with more force than
usual.
CAUTION Do not overly rely on th
e hill start assist to
prevent backwards movement of the vehicle.Under certain circumstances, even when hillstart assist is activated, the vehicle may move backwards if the brake pedal is not suf- ficiently depressed, if
the vehicle is heavily
loaded, or if the road is very steep or slip- pery. The hill start assist
is not designed to keep
the vehicle stopped in
place on uphill slopes
for more than 2 seconds. When facing uphill, do not rely on using the hill start assist to ma
intain a stopped position
as an alternative to depressing the brake pedal. Doing so could cause an accident. Do not turn the igniti
on switch to the “OFF”,
“LOCK” or “ACC” pos
ition while the hill
start assist is operating. The hill start assist could stop operating, wh
ich could result in
an accident.

 The hill start assist is activated when all of the following conditions are met. • The engine is running. (The hill start assist

the brake pedal depressed. • The parking brake is released.  The hill start assist will not operate if the accelerator pedal is
depressed before the
brake pedal is released.  The hill start assist also operates when reversing on an uphill slope.

CAUTION If the warning is displayed, the hill start assist will not operate. Start off carefully. Park your vehicle in a

to stop the vehicle
immediately, but th

The anti-lock braking system helps prevent the wheels from locking up when braking.This helps maintain vehicle drivability and steering wheel handling.  When using the anti-lock brakes (sudden braking), steering is slightly different from normal driving conditions. Use the steering wheel carefully. Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Even if your vehi- cle is equipped with
the anti-lock braking
system, leave a greater braking distance when: • Driving on gravel or snow-coveredroads. • Driving on uneven road surfaces.
 Operation of anti-lock braking system is not restricted situations where brakes areapplied suddenly. This system may also prevent the wheels from locking when you drive over manholes, steel roadworkplates, road markings
, or any uneven road
surface.  When the anti-lock braking system is in use, you may feel the brake pedal vibrat- ing and hear a unique sound. It may also feel as if the pedal
resists being pressed.
In this situation, si
mply hold the brake
pedal down firmly. Do not pump thebrake, which will result in reduced braking performance.
CAUTION The brake assist system is not a device designed to exercise
braking force greater
than its capacity. Make sure to always keep asufficient distance be
tween vehicl
es in front
of you without relying too much on the brake assist system.NOTE
 Once the brake assist system is operational, it maintains great braking force even if the brake pedal is lightly released. To stop its operation, completely removeyour foot from the brake pedal.  The brake assist system may become opera- tional when the brake pedal is fully depressed even if it
has not been depressed
suddenly.  When the brake assist system is in use while driving, you may feel as if the depressedbrake pedal is soft, the pedal moves in small motions in conjunction with the operation noise, or the vehicle body and the steeringwheel vibrate. This occurs when the brake assist system is ope
rating normally and does
not indicate faulty
operation. Continue to
depress the brake pedal.  You may hear an operation noise when the brake pedal is suddenl
y or fully depressed
while stationary. This does not indicate a malfunction and the brake assist system is operating normally.
 When the anti-lock brake system warning light or only active st
ability control warning
light illuminate, the brake assist system innot functioning.

vated to prevent overheating of the power steering system. This f
unction will make the
steering wheel graduall
y harder to turn. In
this event, limit your turning of the steering wheel for a while. When the system hascooled down, the steering effort will return to normal.  If you turn the steering wheel while the vehi- cle is stationary with the headlights on, the headlights may become
dim. This behavior
is not abnormal. The he
adlights will return to
their original brightness after a short while.

responsibillty to drive carefully, This means taking into account the traffic, road and envi- ronmental conditions. Be sure to use the same specified type and size of tire on all four
wheels. Otherwise, the
ASC may not work properly. Do not install any aftermarket limited slip differential (LSD) on your vehicle. The ASC may stop functioning properly.NOTE
 An operation noise may be emitted from the engine compartment in the following situa-tions. The sound is associated with checkingthe operations of the ASC. At this time, you may feel a shock from the brake pedal if you depress it. These do not
indicate a malfunc-
tion. • When the ignition switch is set to the “ON” position. • When the vehicle is driven for a while after the engine is turned on.
 When the ASC is acti
