iarize yourself with the
following terms before loading your vehicle:  Vehicle maximum load on the tire: load on an individual tire that is determined by distributing to each axle its share of the maximum loaded vehicle weight anddividing by two.  Vehicle normal load on the tire: load on an individual tire that is determined by dis-tributing to each axle its share of the curb weight, accessory weight, and normal occupant weight and dividing by two. Maximum loaded vehicle weight: the sum of - (a) Curb weight;(b) Accessory weight; (c) Vehicle capacity weight; and (d) Production options weight.
 Curb weight: the weight of a motor vehi- cle with standard equipment including themaximum capacity of
fuel, oil, and cool-
ant.  Accessory weight: the combined weight (in excess of those st
andard items which
may be replaced) of automatic transaxle, power steering, power brakes, power win-dows, power seats, radio, and heater, to the extent that these items are available as factory- installed equipment (whether installed or not).  Vehicle capacity weight: the rated cargo and luggage load plus 150 lbs (68 kg) * times the vehicle’s designated seating capacity. Production options weight: the combined weight of those installed regular produc- tion options weighing over 5 lbs (2.3 kg)in excess of those standard items which they replace, not prev
iously considered in
curb weight or accessory weight, includ-ing heavy duty brakes,
ride levelers, roof
rack, heavy duty battery, and special trim.  Normal occupant weight: 150 lbs (68 kg) * times the number of
specified occupants

If your vehicle breaks down on the road, move to the shoulder and turn on the hazard warning flashers. If there is no shoulder, orthe shoulder is not safe, drive in the right lane slowly with the hazard
lights flashing, until
you come to a safe stopping place. Keep theflashers flashing. If the engine stops, there will be no power assist to the steering and brakes, making these difficult to use.  The brake booster will not work, so the brakes will not grip well. The brake pedal will be harder to press than usual.  Since there is no power steering assist, the steering wheel will be hard to turn.
Get help from your passengers, bystanders, etc. to push the vehicle
and move it to a safe
area.

If the engine cannot be started because the battery is weak or de
ad, you can start it with
the battery from anothe
r vehicle using jumper
cables. 1. Take off any metal jewelry such as watch bands or bracelets th
at might create an
accidental electrical contact. 2. Position the vehi
cles close enough
together so that the jumper cables canreach, but be sure the vehicles aren’t touching each other.
3. Set the parking brake firmly on your vehi- cle and move the selector lever into the “P” (PARK) position. 4. Set the parking brake firmly on the othervehicle. Put the automatic transaxle in “P”5. Turn the ignition switch (the engine switch) on each vehicle to the “LOCK” or “OFF” position. 6. Make sure your battery electrolyte is at the proper level. (Refer to “Battery” on page 9-13.)

Jump-starting the engine
WA R N I N G To reduce the risk of igniting flammable gas that may be emitted from the battery,carefully read this section before jump- starting the vehicle. Do not try to start you

or towing. This can cause an accident resulting in serious
injury or death and
can damage the vehicle.NOTE
 Do not use jumper cables if they have dam- age or corrosion.
CAUTION Check the other vehicle.
It must have a 12-
volt battery. If the other system isn’t 12-volt,both systems can be damaged.NOTE

7. Connect one end of one jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the dis- charged battery (A),
and then connect the
other end to the positive (+) terminal of the booster battery (B).

to the negative (-) terminal of the booster battery (B), a
nd then connect the
other end to the designated ground location of the vehicl
e with the discharged
battery (A) at the point farthest from the battery. 9. Start the engine in the vehicle providing the boost. Let the engine idle a few min- utes, then start the engine in the vehiclewith the discharged battery.
10. After the engine is
started, disconnect the
cables in the reverse order from the wayyou connected them.
WA R N I N G If the electrolyte flui
d is not visible, or
looks frozen, DO NOT ATTEMPT JUMPSTARTING!!The battery might split open or explode if the temperature is below the freezing point or if it is not filled to the properlevel.

 Open the terminal cover before connecting the jumper cable to the positive terminal of the battery.(Refer to “Battery” on page 9-13.)  Use the proper cables suitable for the battery size. Otherwise heat damage
to the cables could
result.
WA R N I N G Be sure to follow the proper order when connecting the batteries, of: 
 Make sure that the connection is made to the correct designated location (as shown in the illustration) properly. If theconnection is directly made to the negative (-) terminal of the battery, the flammable gases from inside the battery might catchfire and explode, caus
ing personal injury.
When connecting the jumper cable, do not connect the positive (+) cable to the nega- tive (-) terminal. Sparks can make the bat- tery explode.

If you drive your vehicl
e with a low battery
charge after the engine has been started byusing jumper cables, th
e engine may misfire.
This can cause the anti-lock braking system warning light to blink on
and off. This is only
due to the low battery voltage. It is not a problem with the brake system. If this hap- pens, fully charge the battery and ensure the charging system is operating properly.

When the engine is overheating, the warningwill be displayed in th
e instrument cluster as
follows.  The information screen in the multi infor- mation display will be interrupted and the engine coolant temp
erature warning dis-
play will appear. Also “ ” will blink. (Color liquid crystal display type) lamp will illuminate.

If these warnings are displayed:
1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place. Turn on the hazard warning flashers.2. With the engine st
ill running, carefully
raise the engine hood to vent the engine compartment.3. Check that the cooling fan is running. If the fan is not turn
ing, stop the engine

Charging the battery by using an external battery charger
WA R N I N G Always remove the
battery from your
vehicle when the battery is charged by an external battery charger. Keep sparks, cigarette
s, and flames away
from the battery because the battery couldexplode. Keep your work area well vented when charging or using
the battery in an
enclosed space. Remove all the caps before charging the battery. Electrolyte (battery acid) is made of corro- sive diluted sulfuric acid. If electrolyte comes in contact with your hands, eyes,clothes, or the pain
ted surface of your
vehicle, thoroughly
flush with water. If
electrolyte gets in your eyes, flush themimmediately and thor
oughly with water,
and get prompt medical attention. Always wear protective clothing and gog- gles when working near the battery. Keep the battery out of the reach of chil- dren.

WA R N I N G When checking or servicing the inside of the engine compartment, be sure theengine is stopped and has had a chance tocool down. If you need to work
in the engine compart-
ment with the engine running, be espe- cially careful that your clothing, hair, etc. does not get caught in the cooling fans,drive belts, or other moving parts. After performing the maintenance work, make sure that no tools or cloths are left behind in the engine compartment. If they are left behind, a fire or damage tothe vehicle may occur. The cooling fans can turn on automati- cally even if the engine is not running. Turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” position to be safe while you work in theengine compartment. Do not smoke or allow open flames around fuel or the battery. The fumes are flamma- ble. Be extremely careful when working around the battery. It
contains poisonous
and corrosive sulfuric acid. Do not get under your ve
hicle while it is on
a jack.Always use properly rated automotive jack stands.

Normally, the catalyti
c converter does not
require maintenance. However, it is importantto keep the engine properly tuned for the con- verter to continue to work properly. To reduce the possibili
ty of catalytic con-
verter damage:  Use UNLEADED GASOLINE ONLY of the type of recommended in the “Fuel selection”. Do not drive with an extremely low fuel level. Running out of gas could damage the catalytic converter.
 Do not try to start the engine by pushing or towing the vehicle. If the battery isweak or run down, use jumper cables to properly start the engine.  Do not idle the engine with any spark plug wires disconnected or removed, such as when performing
diagnosti
c tests.
 Do not idle the engine
for a long time if it
is idling roughly or otherwise obviously malfunctioning.  To prevent the catalytic converter from being damaged from unburned gas, do not race the engine when turning off the igni-tion switch.  Stop driving the vehicle if you think the performance is noticeably low, or theengine has a malfunction such as with the ignition, etc. If you are not able to stop driving immediately,
slow down and drive
for only a short time. Have your vehicle checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of yourchoice as soon
as possible.
 In unusual situations involving major engine problems, a burning odor mayindicate severe and abnormal catalytic converter overheating.
If this occurs, stop
in a safe place, shut the engine off and letthe vehicle cool. Once
the engine is cool,
immediately take
your vehicle to an
authorized Mitsubishi
Motors dealer or a
repair facility of your choice for service.

Use the engine hood release lever (located under the instrument panel near the driver’s door) to unlock the engine hood. Pull the lever toward you to release the engine hood latch.

hot exhaust, since a fire could occur. Do not put undercoat paint on the cata- lytic converter.
Engine hood To open

The fluid level falls slightly with wear of the brake pads, but this
does not indicate any
abnormality. If the fluid level falls sealed tight in a short length of time, it indi
cates leaks from the
brake system. If this occurs, have the vehicle checked by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or arepair facility
of your choice.
Use the recommended brake fluid conform- ing to DOT 3 or DOT 4. The reservoir cap must be tightly sealed to keep dirt and water out.

The condition of the battery is very importantfor quick starting and to keep the vehicle’selectrical system work
ing properly. Check the
battery regularly. If battery performance is suspect, have the battery and charging system tested by anauthorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.
The electrolyte level
must be between the
limits shown on the outside of the battery. Fillit with distilled water as needed. The inside of the battery is divided into several compart- ments. Take the cap off of each compartmentand fill to the mark. Do not fill above the top line because a spill during driving could cause damage. The battery is weaker in cold temperatures. This has to do with it
s chemical and physical
properties and is why a very cold battery, especially one with a low charge, will have a hard time starting your vehicle.It is recommended th
at you have your battery
and charging system checked by an autho- rized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair
Fluid type
CAUTION Do not let any petrol
eum-based fluid touch,
mix with, or get into
the brake fluid. This
will damage the seals. Be careful when handli
ng brake fluid. It can
damage painted surfaces. Use only the listed brak
e fluid. Different
brands of brake fluid
have different addi-
tives, and these can cause a chemical reac- tion. Do not mix brands of brake fluid. Keep the reservoir ta
nk cap closed to keep
the brake fluid from evaporating.
Battery
NOTE
 After replacing the battery, the electronic control system data for the automatic trans-axle, etc., will be erased.As a result, shifting may be rough. Shifting will become
smoother after several
changes in speed.

battery life. To disconnect the battery cable, stop the engine. Disconnect the
negative (-) terminal
first, then the positive (+) terminal. To recon- nect the battery, first
connect the positive (+)
terminal and then the negative (-) terminal,before starting the vehicle.Disconnection and connection

 Open the terminal cover (A) before discon- necting or connecting
the positive (+) termi-
nal of the battery.  Loosen the nut (B) a
nd then disconnect the
battery cable from the positive (+) terminal.
WA R N I N G Never disconnect the battery while the engine is running, or you could damagethe vehicle’s electrical parts. Never short-circuit the battery. This could cause it to overheat and be damaged. Keep sparks, cigarettes, and flames away from the battery because the battery couldexplode. Electrolyte (battery acid) is made of corro- sive diluted sulfuric acid. If it spills on nearby parts, it can crack, stain, or dis- color them. And if it gets on your skin orin your eyes, it can cause burns or blind- ness. Please observe the following han- dling instructions:• If electrolyte gets on plastic parts orother nearby parts, wipe it off with a softcloth or chamois soak
ed in a solution of
water and neutral detergent then imme- diately rinse the affected parts withplenty of water.• If electrolyte gets on your hands orclothes, rinse thoroughly with water. If electrolyte gets in your eyes, flush them with water immediately and get immedi-ate medical attention.
 Open doors and wind
ows in any closed
space where you may be charging or working with the battery. Always wear protecti
ve clothing and gog-
gles when working with the battery, or have a skilled automobi
le technician do it.
If you are quick-ch
arging your battery,
first disconnect the battery cables. In order to prevent a
short-circuit, be sure
to disconnect the negative (-) terminal first, and reconnect it last. If the electrolyte level
is very low, have the
battery checked at an
authorized Mitsubi-
shi Motors dealer or
a repair facility of
your choice. Battery posts, terminals and related acces- sories contain lead
and lead compounds.
Wash hands after handling.NOTE
 Check each battery terminal for corrosion. You can prevent further corrosion by wash-ing with a solution of baking soda and water. Grease the posts and cl
amps after cleaning or
tightening them.  Ensure the battery is securely installed and cannot be moved. Also
check each terminal
for tightness.  If you will not be driving your vehicle for a long period of time, remove the battery andstore it in a place where the battery fluid will not freeze. The battery only should be stored with a full charge.  Before cleaning the battery, tighten all the filler port caps to keep
dirt and moisture out.
