CAUTION
Do not keep thestarter motorengaged
for more than10seconds. Ifthe engine
does notstart right away, placethe
ignition switchinthe OFF position and
wait 10seconds beforetryingagain.

Do not attempt tostart theengine bypushing.
CAUTION
. Continuously Variable Transmission
(CVT) models cannotbepush-
started ortow-started. Attempting
to do somay cause transmission
damage.
. Three-way catalystequipped mod-
els should notbestarted bypushing
since thethree waycatalyst maybe
damaged.
. Never trytostart thevehicle by
towing it; when theengine starts,
the forward surgecouldcause the
vehicle tocollide withthetow
vehicle.

CAUTION
. Do not continue todrive ifyour
vehicle overheats. Doingsocould
cause engine damage oravehicle
fire.
. To avoid thedanger ofbeing
scalded, neverremove theradiator
cap while theengine isstill hot.
When theradiator capisremoved,
pressurized hotwater willspurt out,
possibly causingseriousinjury.
. Do not open thehood ifsteam is
coming out.
If your vehicle isoverheating (indicatedbyan
extremely hightemperature gaugereading) ,or if
you feel alack ofengine power, detectabnormal
noise, etc.,takethefollowing steps:
1. Move thevehicle safelyoffthe road and
apply theparking brake.
2. Continuously Variable Transmission
(CVT) models:
Move theshift lever tothe P(Park) position.
Manual Transmission (MT)models:
Move theshift lever tothe N(Neutral)
position.

Do not stop theengine.
3. Turn offthe airconditioner (ifso equipped) .
Open allthe windows, movetheheater orair
conditioner temperature controltomaximum
hot and fancontrol tohigh speed.
4. Get outofthe vehicle. Lookandlisten for
steam orcoolant escaping fromtheradiator
before opening thehood. (Ifsteam or
coolant isescaping, turnoffthe engine.)
Do not open thehood further untilnosteam
or coolant canbeseen.
5. Open theengine hood.
WARNING
If steam orwater iscoming fromthe
engine, standcleartoprevent getting
burned.
6. Visually checkthedrive beltfordamage or
looseness. Alsocheck ifthe cooling fanis
running. Theradiator hosesandradiator
should notleak water. Ifcoolant isleaking or
the cooling fandoes notrun, stop the
engine.
WARNING
Be careful nottoallow yourhands, hair,
jewelry orclothing tocome intocontact
with, orget caught in,engine beltsor
the engine cooling fan.Theengine
cooling fancan start atany time.
7. After theengine coolsdown, checkthe
coolant levelinthe reservoir withtheengine
running. Addcoolant tothe reservoir if
necessary .Have yourvehicle repaired ata
NISSAN dealer.

The engine cooling systemisfilled atthe factory
with apre-diluted mixtureof50% Genuine
NISSAN LongLifeAntifreeze/Coolant (blue)and
50% water toprovide year-round anti-freeze
and coolant protection. Theanti-freeze solution
contains rustandcorrosion inhibitors. Additional
engine cooling systemadditives arenot neces-
sary .
WARNING
. Never remove theradiator orcool-
ant reservoir capwhen theengine is
hot. Wait untiltheengine and
radiator cooldown. Serious burns
could becaused byhigh pressure
fluid escaping fromtheradiator.
See precautions inªIf your vehicle
overheatsº (P.6-10) ofthis manual.
. The radiator isequipped witha
pressure typeradiator cap.To pre-
vent engine damage, useonly a
genuine NISSANradiatorcap.
. Ifthe engine wasstopped soon
when theengine ishot, thecooling
fan may operate forapproximately
10 minutes aftertheengine was
stopped tocool thecomponents in
the engine compartment. Whenthe cooling
fanisoperating, besure
that hands orother items donot get
caught init.
CAUTION
. Never useanycooling systemad-
ditives suchasradiator sealer.Ad-
ditives mayclog thecooling system
and cause damage tothe engine,
transmission and/orcooling sys-
tem.
. When adding orreplacing coolant,
be sure touse only Genuine
NISSAN LongLifeAntifreeze/Cool-
ant (blue) orequivalent. Genuine
NISSAN LongLifeAntifreeze/Cool-
ant (blue) ispre-diluted toprovide
antifreeze protection to-348F

CHECKING ENGINEOILLEVEL

1. Park thevehicle onalevel surface andapply
the parking brake.
2. Run theengine untilitreaches operating
temperature.
3. Turn offthe engine. Waitmore than10
minutes forthe oiltodrain backinto
the oilpan.
4. Remove thedipstick andwipe itclean.
Reinsert itall the way.
5. Remove thedipstick againandcheck theoil
level. Itshould bewithin therange
