Checking Brake Fluid Level
+Check ¯uid level in reservoir tank. It should be between Max
and Min lines on reservoir tank.
+ If ¯uid level is extremely low, check brake system for leaks.
+ If the brake warning lamp comes on, check brake ¯uid level
switch and parking brake switch.
Checking Brake Line
CAUTION:
If leakage occurs around joints, retighten or, if necessary,
replace damaged parts.
1. Check brake lines (tubes and hoses) for cracks, deterioration
or other damage. Replace any damaged parts.
2. Check for oil leakage by fully depressing brake pedal while engine is running.
Changing Brake Fluid
CAUTION:
+Re®ll with new brake ¯uid ``DOT 3''.
+ Always keep ¯uid level higher than minimum line on res-
ervoir tank.
+ Never reuse drained brake ¯uid.
+ Be careful not to splash brake ¯uid on painted areas; it
may cause paint damage. If brake ¯uid is splashed on
painted areas, wash it away with water immediately.
1. Clean inside of reservoir tank, and re®ll with new brake ¯uid.
2. Connect a vinyl tube to each air bleeder valve.
3. Drain brake ¯uid from each air bleeder valve by depressing brake pedal.
4. Re®ll until brake ¯uid comes out of each air bleeder valve. Use same procedure as in bleeding hydraulic system to re®ll
brake ¯uid. Refer to ``Bleeding Brake System'', BR-4.

ABS ACTUATOR AND ELECTRIC UNIT
Removal
1. Disconnect battery cable.
2. Drain brake ¯uid. Refer to ``Changing Brake Fluid'', BR-3.
3. Remove mounting bracket ®xing bolts and nuts.
4. Disconnect connector, brake pipes and remove ®xing nuts.
Installation
CAUTION:
After installation, re®ll brake ¯uid. Then bleed air. Refer to
Bleeding Brake System'', BR-4.
1. Connect brake pipes temporarily.
2. Tighten ®xing bolts and nuts.
3. Tighten brake pipes.
4. Connect connector and battery cable.

frequently.)
CHECK BRAKE FLUID PRESSURE.
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Check brake ¯uid pressure distribution.
Refer to proportioning valve inspection.
OK
cNG Perform Preliminary
Check, refer to BR-40.
CHECK WHEEL SENSOR.
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Check wheel sensor connector for ter- minal damage or loose connections.
2. Perform wheel sensor mechanical check.
Refer to Diagnostic Procedure 1,
BR-57.
OK
cNG Repair.
CHECK FRONT AXLES.
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Check front axles for excessive loose-
ness. Refer to FA section (``Front Wheel
Bearing'', ``ON-VEHICLE SERVICE'').

Repacking Front Wheel Bearing and Axle Joint
Grease
FRONT WHEEL BEARING GREASE
Apply multi-purpose grease sparingly to the following parts:
+Threaded portion of spindle
+Contact surface between wheel bearing washer and outer
wheel bearing
+Grease seal lip
+Wheel hub (as shown at the left)
AXLE JOINT GREASE
+Drain approximately 2 liters (1-3/4 Imp qt) of differential oil.
+Remove knuckle spindle.
+Slightly pull out axle and repack axle joint with recommended
grease.
Refer to FA section.
Checking Free-running Hub Grease
Check free-running hub grease for leakage and water or dust entry.
Checking Water Entry in Knuckle Flange
+Check for water entry in knuckle ¯ange by removing one bolt
of lower knuckle ¯ange bearing cap and probing with a suitable
thin bar.
+After checking, be sure to reinstall the bolt to a tightening torque
of 30 to 40 Nzm (3.1 to 4.1 kg-m, 22 to 30 ft-lb).
Checking Brake Fluid Level and Leaks
If ¯uid level is extremely low, check brake system for leaks.

1. Drain brake ¯uid from each air bleeder valve.
2. Re®ll until new brake ¯uid comes out from each air bleeder
valve. Use same procedure as in bleeding hydraulic system to
re®ll brake ¯uid. Refer to BR section.
+Re®ll with recommended brake ¯uid.
+Never reuse drained brake ¯uid.
+Be careful not to splash brake ¯uid on painted areas.
