Unified Control Meter System Description
UNIFIED CONTROL METER
Speedometer, odo/trip meter, tachometer, fuel gauge and water
temperature gauge are controlled totally by unified meter control
unit.
Meter/gauge Operation and Odo/Trip Meter
Segment Check in Diagnosis Mode
DIAGNOSIS FUNCTION
lOdo/trip meter segment can be checked in diagnosis mode.
lMeters/gauges can be checked in diagnosis mode.
HOW TO ALTERNATE DIAGNOSIS MODE
1. Turn ignition switch to ON and change odo/trip meter to
``TRIP A'' or ``TRIP B''.
2. Turn ignition switch to OFF.
3. Turn ignition switch to ON when pushing odo/trip meter
switch.
4. Confirm that trip meter indicates ``000.0''.
5. Push odo/trip meter switch more than three times within 5
seconds.
6. All odo/trip meter segments should be turned on.
NOTE: If some segments are not turned on, unified meter
control unit should be replaced.
At this point, the unified control meter is turned to diagnosis
mode.
7. Push odo/trip meter switch. Indication of each meter/gauge
should be as shown left during pushing odo/trip meter switch
if it is no malfunctioning.
NOTE: It takes about 1 minute for indication of fuel gauge
to become stable.

AUXILIARY MECHANISM: Temperature setting
trimmer
The trimmer compensates for differences in range of 3ÉC
between temperature setting (displayed digitally) and tempera-
ture felt by driver.
Operating procedures for this trimmer are as follows:
lBegin Self-diagnosis STEP 4 mode.
lPress(fan) switch to set system in auxiliary mode.
lTurn temperature dial clockwise or counterclockwise as
desired. Temperature will change at a rate of 1ÉC each time
a switch is pressed.
When battery cable is disconnected, trimmer operation is
canceled. Temperature set becomes that of initial condition,
i.e. 0ÉC.

17. Measure ring gear-to-drive pinion backlash with a dial indi-
cator.
Ring gear-to-drive pinion backlash:
0.13 - 0.18 mm
(0.0051 - 0.0071 in)
lIf backlash is too small, decrease thickness of right shim and
increase thickness of left shim by the same amount.
If backlash is too great, reverse the above procedure.
Never change the total amount of shims as it will change the
bearing preload.
18. Check total preload with Tool.
When checking preload, turn drive pinion in both directions
several times to seat bearing rollers correctly.
Total preload:
P
1+ [0.3 to 1.5 N´m (3 to 15 kg-cm, 2.6 to 13.0 in-
lb)]
P
1: Pinion bearing preload
Refer to SDS, PD-2014.
Tool number: ST3127S000
lIf preload is too great, remove the same amount of shim from
each side.
lIf preload is too small, add the same amount of shim to each
side.
Never add or remove a different number of shims for each
side as it will change ring gear-to-drive pinion backlash.
19. Recheck ring gear-to-drive pinion backlash because
increase or decrease in thickness of shims will cause change
of ring gear-to-pinion backlash.
20. Check runout of ring gear with a dial indicator.
Runout limit:
0.05 mm (0.0020 in)
lIf backlash varies excessively in different places, the vari-
ance may have resulted from foreign matter caught between
the ring gear and the differential case.
lIf the backlash varies greatly when the runout of the ring gear
is within a specified range, the hypoid gear set or differential
case should be replaced.
21. Check tooth contact.
Refer to ªADJUSTMENTº of original Service Manual.
22. Install rear cover and gasket.

HOW TO CHANGE SELF-DIAGNOSIS MODE
With CONSULT
From User mode to Diagnosis mode
After selecting AIR BAG on the ``SELECT SYSTEM'' screen, User mode automatically changes to Diagno-
sis mode.
From Diagnosis mode to User mode
To return to User mode from Diagnosis mode, touch ``BACK'' key of CONSULT until ``SELECT SYSTEM''
appears, Diagnosis mode automatically changes to User mode.
Without CONSULT
From User mode to Diagnosis mode
Diagnosis mode activates only when a malfunction is detected,
by pressing the driver's door switch at least 5 times within 7
seconds after turning the ignition ``ON''. SRS will not enter Diag-
nosis mode if no malfunction is detected.
From Diagnosis mode to User mode
After a malfunction is repaired, switch the ignition ``OFF'' for at least 1 second, then back ``ON''. Diagnosis
mode returns to User mode. If switching from Diagnosis mode to User mode is required while malfunction
is being detected, switch the ignition ``OFF'', then back ``ON'' and press the driver's door switch at least 5
times within 7 seconds.
