To idle your vehicle with the DRL or automatic headlamps
off, set the parking brake while the ignition is in OFF.
Then start your vehicle. The DRL, headlamps and parking
lamps will stay off until you release the parking brake.
To turn off the automatic headlamp feature when it's
dark outside, move the exterior lamp control to the
parking lamp position. Your parking lamps will remain
illuminated and your headlamps will turn off. The fog
lamps (if equipped) will also be lit if they were on when
you switched to the parking lamp position.
As with any vehicle, you should turn on the regular
headlamp system when you need it.Fog Lamps (If Equipped)
To turn the fog lamps on,
press the top of the fog
lamp switch located
on the left side of the
instrument panel.
A light will glow on the switch to let you know that they
are on. The parking lamps must be on or your fog lamps
will not illuminate. Press the bottom of the switch to
turn the fog lamps off.
The fog lamps will go off whenever you change to
high
-beam headlamps. When you return to low beams,
the fog lamps will come on again.

LOWER: This setting sends most of the air
through the ducts near the floor. The rest comes out
of the defroster and side window vents. When using
this setting in the recirculation mode, the windows
may fog up. See ªRecirculationº in the Index for
more information.
DEFOG: This setting allows half of the air to go
to the floor ducts and half to the defrost and side
window vents. The air conditioning compressor will run
automatically in this setting unless the outside
temperature is below 38F (3.3C). (Even when the
compressor is running, you can control the temperature.)
DEFROST: This setting directs most of the air
through the defrost and side window vents. Some of the
air goes to the floor ducts. The air conditioning
compressor will run automatically in this setting unless
the outside temperature is below 38F (3.3C).
(Even when the compressor is running, you can control
the temperature.)Air Conditioning Compressor Button
Press the A/C button in to operate the air conditioning
compressor. The indicator light on the button will flash
briefly and stay on solid to let you know your air
conditioning will come on. If the light on the A/C button
turns off after the flashing has stopped your air
conditioning will not come on. Your air conditioning
will not come on for two reasons:

The outside temperature is below 38F (3.3C).

The refrigerant pressure is too low or too high. If the
outside temperature is above 38F (3.3C). See ªAir
Conditioning Refrigerantsº in the Index.
Recirc Button
: This button is used to recirculate much of the air
inside your vehicle. This setting is not available in
DEFOG or DEFROST. Operating the system in the
RECIRC may cause the windows to fog up when the
weather is cold and damp. To clear the fog, use the
DEFOG or DEFROST modes and increase the fan
speed. To avoid refogging of the windows, use the
OUTSIDE AIR mode.
Outside Air Button
: This button is used to bring in outside air.

3-4 Air Conditioning
On very hot days, open the windows long enough to let
hot inside air escape. This reduces the time the
compressor has to run, which should help fuel economy.
For quick cool
-down on very hot days, use RECIRC
with the temperature knob turned all the way to the blue
area and the A/C button pushed. If this setting is used
for long periods of time, the air in your vehicle may
become too dry.
For normal cooling on hot days, use UPPER with the
temperature knob turned to the blue area. With the A/C
button and the outside air button pushed in, the system
will bring in outside air and cool it.
On cool but sunny days, the sun may warm your upper
body, but your lower body may not be warm enough. To
remedy this, you can use BI
-LEVEL with the
temperature knob in the middle with the A/C button and
the outside air button pushed in. The system will bring
in outside air and direct it to your upper body, while
sending slightly warmed air to your lower body. You
may notice the temperature difference more at some
times than others.
Heating
On cold days use FLOOR and the outside air button
pushed in with the temperature knob turned all the way
to the red area. The system will bring in outside air, heat
it and send it to the floor ducts.
If your vehicle has an engine coolant heater, you can use
it to help your system provide warm air faster when it's
cold outside (0
F (
-18
C) or lower). An engine
coolant heater warms the coolant your engine and
heating system use to provide heat. See ªEngine
Coolant Heaterº in the Index.
Ventilation
For mild outside temperatures when little heating or
cooling is needed, use UPPER and the outside air button
to direct air through your vehicle. Your vehicle also has
the flow
-through ventilation system described later in
this section.
Defogging and Defrosting
Your system has two settings for clearing the front and
side windows. To defrost the windows quickly, use
DEFROST with the temperature knob turned all the way
to the red area. To warm passengers while keeping the
windows clear, use DEFOG.

3-7 Manual Control of the Automatic System
If you prefer to manually control the heating, cooling
and ventilation in your vehicle, set the system to the
temperature and fan speed you want. Next, push the
mode button to select your desired airflow direction.
The system will try to maintain the temperature you set
using the mode you select. The following suggestions
will help the system run more efficiently in manual mode.
Fan Button
: The button below the display is used to manually
select the force of air you want. The display will show
the fan speed. Fan control is no longer automatic, but
the system remains in auto temperature control.
If the airflow seems very low when the fan knob is turned
to the highest setting regardless of the mode setting, your
passenger compartment air filter (if equipped) may need to
be replaced. See ªMaintenance Scheduleº in the Index.
Econ Button
Press the ECON button to turn the compressor on and
off. The indicator light is illuminated when the
compressor is off. AUTO will be not be illuminated, but
the system will maintain automatic air delivery and fan
speed control. The system will attempt to control the
temperature without the help of the compressor.Mode Button
The MODE button is used to control the direction of
airflow when the system is not in AUTO. The first press
will display the current airflow direction. Repeated
pressing will cycle through the following air flow
directions shown in the display.
UPPER: This setting directs air through the
instrument panel outlets.
BI-LEV: This setting directs air two ways. Half of
the air is directed through the instrument panel outlets.
Most of the remaining air is directed through the floor
ducts and a little to the defrost and side window vents.
LOWER: This setting sends most of the air
through the ducts near the floor. The rest comes out of
the defrost and side window vents. When using this
mode and RECIRC, the windows may fog up when the
weather is cold and damp. See ªRecirculationº in the
Index for more information.
DEFOG: This setting allows half of the air to go
