Passenger Compartment Air Filter
Passenger compartment air, both outside and
recirculated air, is routed through a passenger
compartment filter. The filter removes certain
contaminants from the air, including pollen and dust
particles Reductions in airflow, which may occur more
quickly in dusty areas, indicate that the filter needs to be
replaced early. For how often to change the air filter, see
Part A: Scheduled Maintenance Services on page 6-4.
The access panel for the passenger compartment air
filter is located in the back of the glove box. To replace
the filter, do the following:
1. Pull the tab located on the outer access panel up
and out.

2. Then push the tab, located on the left of the inner
access panel, to the right.
3. The first air filter will pull straight out. To remove the
second, reach in and slide it toward the opening.
Pull
the second filter out.
4. Replace the filters by reversing Step 3. Make sure
the filters are inserted
so that the sealing foam is
angled in the same direction on both filters. For the

5. Close the inner access door, while squeezing the

Engine Air CleanedFilter
The engine air cleaner/filter is located at the front of the
engine compartment,
on the driver’s side of the vehicle,
under the engine coolant reservoir. See
Engine
Compartment Overview
on page 5- 72 for more
information on location.
Checking or Replacing the Engine
Air Cleaner/Filter
3. Unlatch the two hooks on top of the engine air
4. Remove and replace the engine air cleaner/filter.
5. Align the tabs located on the bottom of the
panel with the slots at the bottom of the housing.
6. Latch the hooks to secure the panel in place. If the
panel moves easily, check that the tabs are seated
correctly in the slots.

duct back on and reinstall the clamps.
1. Remove the two clamps on the duct.
2. Remove the duct. Operating the engine with the air cleaner/filter
off can cause you or others to be burned.
The air cleaner not only cleans the air,
it stops
flame if the engine backfires.
If it isn’t there
and the engine backfires, you could be burned. Don’t drive with
it off, and be careful working
on the engine with the
air cleaner/filter off.
I
Notice: If the air cleanedfilter is off, a backfire
can cause a damaging engine fire. And, dirt
can easily get into your engine, which will
damage it. Always have the air cleanedfilter in
place when you’re driving.

What to Use
Use a mixture of one-half clean, drinkable water and
one-half
DEX-COOL@ coolant which won’t damage
aluminum parts.
If you use this coolant mixture,
you don’t need
to add anything else.
Adding on
, plain wa ~ ~ * to your cooling
system can be dangerous. Plain water, or
some other liquid such as alcohol, can boil
before the proper coolant mixture will. Your
vehicle’s coolant warning system
is set for the
proper coolant mixture.
With plain water or the
wrong mixture, your engine could get too hot but you wouldn’t get the overheat warning.
Your engine could catch fire and you or others
could be burned. Use a
50/50 mixture of clean,
drinkable water and
DEX-COOL@ coolant.
Notice: If you use an improper coolant mixture,
your engine could overheat and be badly damaged.
The repair cost wouldn’t be covered by your
warranty.
Too much water in the mixture can freeze
and crack the engine, radiator, heater core and
other parts.
If you have to add coolant more than four times a year,
have your dealer check your cooling system.
Notice: If you use the proper coolant, you don’t
have to add extra inhibitors or additives which claim
to improve the system. These can be harmful.

Part A: Scheduled Maintenance
Services
This part contains engine oil and chassis lubrication
scheduled maintenance which explains the engine oil
life system and how
it indicates when to change
the engine oil and filter. Lubricate chassis components
with each
oil change. Also, listed are scheduled
maintenance services which are to be performed at the
mileage intervals specified.
Using Your Maintenance Schedule
We at General Motors want to help you to keep your
vehicle in good working condition. But we don’t know
exactly how you’ll drive it. You may drive short distances
only a few times a week. Or you may drive long distances
all the time in very hot, dusty weather. You may use your
vehicle in making deliveries. Or you may drive it to work,
to do errands or in many other ways.
Because of all the different ways people use their
vehicles, maintenance needs vary. You may need more
frequent checks and replacements.
So please read
the following and note how you drive. If you have any
questions on how to keep your vehicle in good condition,
see your dealer. This part tells
you the maintenance services you
should have done and when you should schedule them.
When you go to your dealer for your service needs,
you’ll know that GM-trained and supported service
people will perform the work using GM parts.
The proper fluids and lubricants to use are listed in
Part
D. Make sure whoever services your vehicle uses
them.
All parts should be replaced and all necessary
repairs done before you or anyone else drives the
vehicle.
This schedule is for vehicles that:

Scheduled Maintenance
The services shown in this schedule up to 100,000 miles
(1 66 000 km) should be repeated after 100,000 miles
(1 66 000 km) at the same intervals for the life of
this vehicle. The services shown at
150,000 miles
(240 000 km) should be repeated at the same interval
after
150,000 miles (240 000 km) for the life of this
vehicle.

Engine Oil and Chassis Lubrication
Scheduled Maintenance
Change engine oil and filter as indicated by the GM
Oil Life System (or every 12 months, whichever
occurs first). Reset the system.
Your vehicle has a computer system that lets you know
when to change the engine oil and filter. This is based on
engine revolutions and engine temperature, and not on
mileage. Based on driving conditions, the mileage at
which an oil change will be indicated can vary
considerably. For the oil life system to work properly,
you must reset the system every time the
oil is changed.
When the system has calculated that oil life has been
diminished, it will indicate that an oil change is
necessary.
A change engine oil message will come on.
Change your oil as soon
as possible within the next
two times you stop for fuel. It
is possible that, if you are
driving under the best conditions, the oil life system may not indicate that an oil change is necessary for over
a year. However, your engine oil and filter must be
changed at least once a year and at this time the system
must be reset. It is also important to check your oil
regularly and keep it at the proper level.
