Sta rting  the  en gine: 
Transmission in neutral, depress 
clutch ped a l fully , do  not 
ac celerate, turn key toY 
an d release
The  engine  cranking is  comp ute r controlle d 
and will c ontinue until the engine starts  or 
up to a  maximum  of  15  s econds . To s top 
the e ngine cranking,  turn the  ignition k ey 
back  to the AC C or J
JJ J position.
W hen the  fue l leve l is  low, the  controlle d 
cranking fe ature  is  disa bled  to  preve nt 
e ngine  dama ge.  Hold the k ey  in  the  Y 
position to start the e ngine.
Start a tte mpts should not last longer than 
1 5 se c o nd s.  If  en g i n e  d o es  n o t  s ta rt ,  w a i t  
1 0 se cond s b efore re peating  proce dure.
To switch  on ignition, only turn  the  ke y to I.

Advice when parking:
zDo  not the  park v ehicle  on  easily 
ig nitable surfaces.  The high  temperature 
of the  ex haust system  could  ignite  the 
su r f a c e.
zAlwa ys  apply  the  hand brak e firmly.  
Ap ply the  ha nd  brake  as  firm ly as  
possible on uphill or downhill slopes.  To 
re duce  operating forces , d epre ss  brake  
pedal  at the s ame  time .
zClose windows.
zBefore  switching off ignition, e ngage  first 
or re ve rse  ge ar. 
zIf the  vehicle  is parke d on a leve l surface  
or  an  up hill incline,  engag e firs t  gear 
before  switching off ig nition. O n an  up hill 
incline,  also  turn the  front whe els away  
fr o m  th e  k e r b .
zIf  the  ve hicle is  on a d ow nhill incline,  
engage  re vers e gear before s witc hing off 
the  ignition.  Also turn the front whee ls

zSw itch  off exterior lam ps,  otherwise the

Cont rol indica tor for im mobili se r oIlluminates brie fly  when the  ignition is 
switched on.
If the  control indicator s tays  illuminated 
after the  ignition is  s witched on, the re is a 
fault in the system;  the e ngine  cannot be  
starte d. S witch off the ig nition, rem ove the  
ke y and  re pe at the s tart attem pt.
If the  control indicator fails to ex tinguish, 
try to start the  engine using the spare  ke y 
and cons ult  a works hop.
Note
The im mobilise r does  not lock the  doors. 
There fore , after le aving the ve hicle alwa ys  
lock it.  See pa ge 24.Remote co ntro l
Used to operate:
zC entral locking s ys tem,
zL uggage  compartme nt  relea se ,

The  rem ote  control has  a range  of 
approx. 3 m etres .  This  range  can be

Accessory socket  
Acce ss ory s ockets  can b e us ed  to  conne ct 
electrical accessories. The battery is 
discharged if the engine is not running .
Do not dama ge the  sock ets by  using 
unsuitable plugs.  The ma ximum power 
consump tion of elec trica l a ccessories must 
not ex cee d 120 wa tts. 
Do not conne ct any  curre nt-delive ring 
acce ss ories , e .g.  ele ctrica l charging 
de vices  or ba tte ries . 
Ele ctrical acce s sories  connecte d to the 
s oc ket  m us t  co m p ly  w i t h  t h e  el ec tr o -
mag ne tic compatibility  requirem ents 
laid d ow n  in  DIN VDE 40 839, otherw ise

Control indicator flashes in g reen.
The rele vant control indicator fla shes when 
the turn signal is on. Both control ind ic ators 
flash  with  the hazard w arning la mps on.

If it flashes  when the engine is running:
Fault that can le ad to d estruction of the 
catalytic conve rter –  se e page 11 6 .

Illuminates  when the  ig nition is  switche d on

clutch fluid lev el is  too low. 
Flashes  at sp eeds  ov er 8 km /h (5 mph) if 
hand brak e is  app lie d.
Release ha nd brake before continuing 
journe y, to avoid ove rheating and 
dam aging the b rake  sy ste m.

1. Move out of the flow of tra ffic as quickly  
as  pos s ible w ithout impe ding other 
veh icles . 
2 . De pres s  clutch. 
3. Shift into ne utral.
4 . Switch off  ignition.Check  engine  oil  level before consulting a 
work shop.
