CONTROL (ESP)Disarming the ASR/ESP systems
In exceptional conditions (starting a
v e h i c l e w h i c h i s b o g g e d d o w n , s t u c k
i n s n o w , o n s o f t g r o u n d ) , i t m a y b e
advisable to disarm the ASR and
E S P s y s t e m s , s o t h a t t h e w h e e l s c a n
move freely and regain grip.
F Press the "ESP OFF" s w i t c h ,
l o c a t e d u n d e r t h e s t e e r i n g w h e e l
to the right. Operating check
The ASR/ESP systems
offer exceptional safety
i n n o r m a l d r i v i n g , b u t t h i s
should not encourage the
driver to take extra risks or drive at
high speed.
The correct functioning of these
systems depends on observation
of the manufacturer's recommen-
d a t i o n s r e g a r d i n g w h e e l s ( t y r e s
a n d r i m s ) , t h e b r a k i n g c o m p o -
n e n t s , t h e e l e c t r o n i c c o m p o n e n t s
and the PEUGEOT assembly and
operation procedures.
A f t e r a n i m p a c t , h a v e t h e s y s t e m
checked by a PEUGEOT dealer.
Operation of the ASR and ESP
systems T h e s w i t c h l i g h t s u p a n d t h e
w a r n i n g l i g h t c o m e s o n , a c
-
companied by a message
on the multifunction display:
the ASR and ESP systems are dis-
armed.
These are triggered again :
F automatically if the ignition is
s w i t c h e d o f f ,
F m a n u a l l y b y p r e s s i n g t h e s w i t c h
again. When a malfunction of the
s y s t e m s o c c u r s , t h e s w i t c h
l i g h t l a s h e s a n d t h e w a r n i n g
light comes on.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer to have
the systems checked.
T h e w a r n i n g l i g h t l a s h e s i f
the ASR or ESP is activated.
Activation of the ASR and ESP
systems
W h e n t h e i g n i t i o n i s o n , t h e A S R a n d
E S P s y s t e m s a r e a l w a y s a c t i v e .
These systems are linked and com-
plement the ABS.
The ASR system optimises drive to
p r e v e n t t h e w h e e l s s k i d d i n g , b y a c t
-
i n g o n t h e b r a k e s o f t h e d r i v e w h e e l s
a n d o n t h e e n g i n e . I t a l s o a l l o w s t h e
directional stability of the vehicle to
be improved on acceleration.
I f t h e r e i s a v a r i a t i o n b e t w e e n t h e t r a -
j e c t o r y f o l l o w e d b y t h e v e h i c l e a n d
t h a t r e q u i r e d b y t h e d r i v e r , t h e E S P
system automatically acts on the en-
gine and the brake of one or more
w h e e l s , i n o r d e r t o p u t t h e v e h i c l e
b a c k o n c o u r s e , w i t h i n t h e l i m i t s o f
t h e l a w s o f p h y s i c s .

CHECKING THE LEVELS

To maintain the reliability
of engines and emission
c o n t r o l s y s t e m s , t h e u s e
of additives in engine oil
is prohibited.
Oil change
According to the information given in
the servicing booklet.
Note: avoid used oil coming into pro-
l o n g e d c o n t a c t w i t h t h e s k i n . E m p t y
the used oil into the containers intend-
ed for this purpose in the PEUGEOT
n e t w o r k .
Brake fluid level:
T h e b r a k e l u i d m u s t b e c h a n g e d a c -
cording to the manufacturer's servic-
ing schedule.
U s e l u i d s r e c o m m e n d e d b y t h e
m a n u f a c t u r e r , w h i c h f u l i l D O T 4
standards.
Note: b r a k e l u i d i s h a r m f u l t o h e a l t h
and very corrosive. Avoid all contact
w i t h t h e s k i n . Used oil
D o n o t d i s p o s e o f u s e d o i l , b r a k e l u i d
or coolant into drains or onto the
ground.
Dipstick
Viscosity selection
I n a l l c a s e s , t h e o i l s e l e c t e d m u s t
meet the manufacturer's require-
ments. Cooling system
U s e t h e l u i d r e c o m m e n d e d b y t h e
manufacturer.
W h e n t h e e n g i n e i s w a r m , t h e t e m
-
perature of the coolant is controlled
by the engine fan. As this fan can ope-
r a t e w i t h t h e i g n i t i o n k e y r e m o v e d
and because the cooling system is
p r e s s u r i s e d , w a i t f o r a t l e a s t o n e h o u r
after the engine has stopped before
c a r r y i n g o u t a n y w o r k .
S l a c k e n t h e c a p b y t w o t u r n s t o r e -
lease the pressure to prevent any
risk of scalding. When the pressure
h a s d r o p p e d , r e m o v e t h e c a p a n d
top up the level.
Note: the coolant does not need to
be changed.
For vehicles equipped with a
p a r t i c l e i l t e r , t h e e n g i n e f a n m a y
operate after the ignition has been
switched off, even when the en-
gine is cold. Power steering reservoir

Oil level

Check the level regularly and

maximum consumption is 0.5 l
per 600 miles (1 000 km).

on the instrument panel or the dip-
stick.

Where the handbrake travel is too
great or there is a reduction in the
p e r f o r m a n c e o f t h e s y s t e m , t h e
h a n d b r a k e s h o u l d b e a d j u s t e d , e v e n
b e t w e e n s e r v i c e s .
Have the system checked by a
PEUGEOT dealer. Only use products recom-
mended by PEUGEOT
or products of equivalent
q u a l i t y a n d s p e c i i c a t i o n s .

RUNNING OUT OF FUEL
(DIESEL)
I f y o u s h o u l d r u n o u t o f f u e l , i t i s n e c e s -
sary to re-prime the circuit:
- i l l t h e f u e l t a n k w i t h a t l e a s t i v e l i t r e s o f d i e s e l ,
- squeeze and release the manual r e - p r i m i n g p u m p , u n t i l f u e l
appears in the transparent pipe
u n d e r t h e b o n n e t ,
- operate the starter until the engine starts.
Brake pads

distances.
It may be necessary to check the

C h a n g e t h e i l t e r r e g u l a r l y , i n a c c o r -
d a n c e w i t h t h e s e r v i c i n g s c h e d u l e .
Air filter and passenger
compartment filter
H a v e t h e i l t e r e l e m e n t s r e p l a c e d r e g -
ularly. If you drive in dusty condi-
tions, change them twice as often.
Manual gearbox
This does not require an oil change.
C h e c k t h e l e v e l i n a c c o r d a n c e w i t h t h e
manufacturer's servicing schedule.

with the manufacturer's servicing
schedule, refer to the pages of
the servicing booklet which corre-
spond to your vehicle's engine.
Battery

Unclip the boot side trim.
Unclip the foam cover and reach
b e h i n d t h e c o v e r t o l o c a t e t h e w i n g
nut.
R e m o v e t h e w i n g n u t .
Release the light unit.
Press the lug A and disconnect the
connector.
Remove the foam.
Move aside the tabs B and remove
the bulb holder.
Change the faulty bulb.
W h e n r e i t t i n g , e n s u r e t h a t t h e b u l b
h o l d e r , t h e l i g h t a n d t h e f o a m c o v e r
are repositioned correctly. Third brake light 5 bulbs

2 nuts

Release the light unit.
S q u e e z e t h e t w o t a b s B to release
the bulb holder.
Change the faulty bulb.
