Disarming the ESP / ASR systems In certain conditions (vehicle stuck in
mud or snow, or on loose ground...),it could prove useful to disarm theASR system to make the wheelsspin and regain grip. ☞
Press the switch "ESP OFF",
situated to the left of the steering wheel.
The switch lights up and the indicatorlights come on, accompanied by themessage ''ASR/ESP de-activated''
on the multifunction display: the ESP
and ASR systems no longer affectthe operation of the engine or thebrakes. They engage again:☞ automatically when the ignition is
switched off,
☞ manually by pressing the switchagain. The ESP system offersincreased safety duringnormal driving, but shouldnot incite the driver to take
risks or to drive at high speed. The operation of the system isassured to the extent to which therecommendations of the manufac-turer regarding the wheels (tyresand wheel rims), the braking com-ponents, the electronic compo-nents and the assembly andrepair procedures within thePEUGEOT network are respect-ed.After an accident or impact, havethe system checked by a
PEUGEOT dealer.
Operating check When a system malfunctionoccurs, the switch lightflashes and the indicatorlight comes on.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer tocheck the system.
TRACTION CONTROL (ASR)
AND DYNAMIC STABILITY
CONTROL (ESP) These systems are linked and com-
plement the ABS.
The ASR system optimises drive to prevent the wheels skidding, by act-ing on the brakes of the drive wheelsand on the engine. It also allows thedirectional stability of the vehicle tobe improved on acceleration. Ifthere is a variation between the tra-jectory followed by the vehicle and
that required by the driver, the ESPsystem automatically acts on theengine and the brake of one or morewheels, in order to put the vehicleback on course.
Operation of the ASR and ESP systems
When one of these two sys-tems is operating, this lightflashes.

CRUISE CONTROL Cruise control enables the vehicle to maintain a steady speed pro-
grammed by the driver, regardless ofthe road characteristics and withoutthe driver having to touch the accelerator or brake pedals. In order for it to be memorised, the vehicle speed must be greater than25 mph (40 km/h) or 37 mph (60 km/h), depending on the engine, and fourth gear at least must beengaged (second gear for the auto-matic gearbox). Operation ☞
Place switch 1in the ONposition.
A speed can be memorised.
☞ Place switch 1in the OFF position
to cancel.
Memorising a speedAs soon as you reach the chosen speed, press button 2or 3. This
memorises the speed, which will be
maintained automatically. Note:
It is possible to accelerate and drive
momentarily at a speed greater than the memorised speed. When the acceleratorpedal is released, the vehicle will return tothe memorised speed. Cancelling the memorised speed If you wish to cancel the memorised speed: ☞ Press button 4or the brake or
clutch pedal.
Recalling the memorised speedAfter cancellation, press button 4.
Y our vehicle will return to the last
memorised speed. Changing a memorised speed
To memorise a speed higher than
the previous one: ☞ press button 3;
☞ release it when you have reached the required speed.
To memorise a speed lower than the
previous one: ☞ press button 2;
☞ release it when you have reached the required speed.
Cancelling the cruise control ☞ place switch 1in the OFF position
or switch off the ignition.
Do not use cruise control on slippery roads or inheavy traffic. THE ABS ANTI-LOCK BRAKINGSYSTEM
When used with approved tyres in
good condition, the ABS increasesthe stability and manoeuvrability ofyour vehicle, particularly on poor orslippery road surfaces. The anti-lock braking system comes into operation automatically whenthere is a risk of wheel lock.
EMERGENCY BRAKING
ASSISTANCE SYSTEM
In an emergency, this system enables the optimum braking pres-
sure to be reached more quickly, thus reducing the stopping distance. It is triggered by the speed at which
the brake pedal is activated. The
effect of this is a reduction in theresistance of the pedal and an
increase in braking efficiency. The normal operation of the ABSmay make itself felt by slightvibrations of the brake pedal. In emergency braking, press very firmly without releasingthe pressure.

AIR BAGS
The air bags have been designed to maximise the safety of the occupantsin the event of serious collisions. They work in conjunction with theforce-limiting seat belts. The electronic detectors register and analyse any abrupt deceleration ofthe vehicle: if the triggering thresholdis reached, the air bags inflateinstantly and protect the occupantsof the vehicle. Immediately after the impact, the air bags deflate rapidly so that they donot hinder the visibility of the occu-pants nor their exit if necessary fromthe vehicle. The air bags are not deployed in the case of collisions which are not seri-
ous, for which the seat belt is suffi-cient to ensure maximum protection. The seriousness of a collisiondepends on the nature of the obsta-cle and the speed of the vehicle atthe moment of the collision. Air bags only operate when the ignition is switched on. Note:
the gas escaping from the air
bags can be a minor irritant. FRONT AIR BAGSThese are folded in the centre of the steering wheel for the driver and in
the fascia for the front passenger.
They are deployed simultaneously, except in cases where the passen-ger air bag is disarmed.
Front air bag fault If this warning light comes on, accompanied by anaudible signal and the mes-
sage "Air bag fault" on the
multiÐfunction display, contact a
PEUGEOT dealer to have the sys-tem checked. Passenger air bag precautions For a vehicle fitted with a passenger air bag disarming switch:
- disarm the airbag if you installa rear-facingchild seat on thefront passengerseat,
- arm the air bag for an adult pas-
senger.
For a vehicle not fitted with a pas-senger air bag disarming switch: - do not install a rear-fac-ing child seat on thefront passenger seat.
Never place your feet or any objecton the fascia.

to the "OFF"position, then
remove the key keeping the slot inthis position.
The air bag warning light on theinstrument panel is lit throughout thedisarming process. In the "OFF" position, the passenger
air bag will not be triggered in the event of an impact. As soon as the child seat is removed, turn the air bag slot to the"ON" position to re-activate the air
bag and thus ensure the safety ofyour passenger in the event of animpact.
* According to destination. SIDE AIR BAGS The side air bags are incorporated into the backs of the front seats, onthe door side. They are deployed independently of
each other, on whichever side thecollision occurs.

CHECKING THE LEVELS Oil level Check the level regularly and top up between changes. Maximumconsumption is 0.5 litres per 600miles (1 000 km). The oil level should be checked with the vehicle level and the engine coldusing the oil gauge or the dipstick.Dipstick There are two marks on the dipstick: A= maximum
Never fill past this mark. B = minimum
To maintain the reliability
of the engines and of the emission control sys-tems, the use of additivesin the engine oil is prohi-bited.
Oil change According to the indications of the
"PEUGEOT SERVICES" .
Note: avoid any prolonged contact of
used oil with the skin. V iscosity selection
In all cases, the oil selected must meet the manufacturer's require-ments.

Brakes and clutch level: -The level should always be bet- ween the DANGER and MAX
marks on the reservoir.
- If the level drops substantially,
contact a PEUGEOT dealer imme-
diately.
Fluid change - must be carried out according to the manufacturer's servicing sche-dule.
- use fluids recommended by the
manufacturer, which fulfil DOT 4standards.
Note: the brake fluid is noxious and
very corrosive. Avoid any contactwith the skin. Coolant level Use the fluid recommended by the
manufacturer. When the engine is warm, the tem- perature of the coolant is controlledby the engine fan. Because this fan
can operate with the ignition off andbecause the cooling system is pres-surised, wait for at least one hourafter the engine has stopped beforecarrying out any work.
To avoid any risk of burns, slacken
the cap to the first notch to release the pressure. When the pressure hasdropped, remove the cap and top upthe level. Used products Do not dispose of used oil, brake fluid or coolant down drains or on theground. Power steering fluid level Open the reservoir with the engine cold. The level should always beabove the MINI mark, close to theMAXI mark. W
