THE KEYS The keys allow you to switch on the ignition and to independentlyoperate the locks on the frontdoors, the fuel filler cap, the glovebox and the passenger air bagdisarming switch. Central lockingFrom the doors, the keys allow you to lock, deadlock, close thewindows keeping the key in thelock, in the locking position, for afew seconds and unlock thedoors and the boot. If one of the front doors or the boot is open, it is impossible tooperate the central locking; anaudible signal indicates this whenlocking by remote control. The remote control performs the same functions at a dis-tance except automatic closingof the windows.The remote control key Deadlocking Deadlocking renders the internal and external door locking con-trols inoperative. ELECTRONIC ENGINE IMMOBILISER This locks the engine control sys- tem a few moments after the igni-
tion has been switched off andtherefore prevents starting of thevehicle by anyone who does not
have the key. Operation Each key has an electronic chip which has a special code. When the ignition is switched on, the key code is recognised andstarting is possible. If the key does not have a code or
has a different code from that
stored in the system memory, thevehicle will not start.

Steering lock Before starting, unlock the steer-
ing if necessary, by gently turningthe steering wheel at the same
time as you turn the key. It is advisable to press the clutch
pedal while operating the starter
to make starting easier. Starting a petrol engine
Do not press the accelerator.
Operate the starter, without
releasing the key, until the engineturns.
Starting a diesel engine
Do not press the accelerator.
Turn the key to the second notch.If the engine is warm enough, the pre-heat light does not come on
and you can start immediately. If the pre-heat light comes on, wait for it to go out before operat-
ing the starter. If the engine stalls, it is necessary
to return the key to the STOPposition before restarting. Never race a coldengine. Never run the engine in a confined space.
Do not make any modifications tothe steering lock.
STARTING
STOP position:

1st notch, Accessories position:
The ignition is off but the acces- sories can be used. 2nd notch, Running position: The ignition is on. Starting position:

FRONT AIR BAGS Disarming the passenger air bag*
Insert the ignition key in switch1and turn it to:
Ð the " ON" position, the passen-
ger air bag is armed.
Ð the " OFF" position, the passenger
air bag is disarmed.
Operating check With the igntition
switched on (2nd notch) this warning light, accompanied by anaudible signal and the message"Passenger air bag deactivat-ed" on the multi-function display,
indicates that the passenger airbag is disarmed (switch in the"OFF" position).
The warning light remains on throughout the disarming process. Passenger air bagprecautions For a vehicle fitted with a disarm- ing switch:
Ð disarm the airbag if youinstall a rear-facing childseat.
Ð arm the air bag for anadult
passenger.
For a vehicle not fitted with a disarming switch: Ð do not install rear-facing child seats onthe front passengerseat.
Never place your feet or anyobject on the fascia. SIDE AIR BAGS These are incorporated into the front seat back, on the door side.
They are triggered independently, on the side on which the collisionoccurs.
Operating check
This is by means of the warning light on the instrument panel. It comes on for six seconds when the ignition is switched on. If the warning light:
Ð does not come on when the ignition is switched on or,
Ð does not switch off after six seconds or,
Ð flashes for five minutes then remains on,
Consult your PEUGEOT dealer.

Moving Off
With the engine running, to move off from position P:
press the brake pedal to change out of position P (shift lock),
select the required position ( R, D, 3, 2or 1) then gradually release the brake pedal; the vehicle moves off
immediately.
You can also move off from position N:
release the handbrake, keeping your foot on the brake pedal,
select the required position ( R, D, 3, 2or 1) then gradually release the brake pedal; the vehicle moves off
immediately.
The four speed automaticgearbox offers a choice between the comfort of integral operation,enhanced by a
sport programme (switch A) and a snowprogramme (switch B).
Gear selection gate Move the lever in the gate to select a position.
Once the position is selected, the indicator light for that position illuminates on the instrument panel display.
P ark: for immobilising the vehicle and starting the engine , with the handbrake on or off.
R everse: for reversing (select this position with the vehicle stationary, engine at idle).
N eutral: for starting the engine and for parking, with the handbrake on.
D rive: for driving in autoadaptive mode (automatic changing of the four gears).
3 : for driving in townor on winding roads (automatic changing of the first 3 gears only).
2 : for driving in the mountainsor for towing a trailer (automatic changing of the first 2 gears only).
1 : for tackling steep gradients (selection of first gear only).
Special feature of the gearbox (2 litre petrol engine) Selection of first gear is by pressing switch Cwith the selector lever in
position 2.
To change out of first gear, pressswitch Cagain or move

FUEL FILLER FLAP
To open:firmly pull the handle on
the floor to the outside of the driver's seat.
To close: from outside the vehi-
cle, push back the flap and check
that it is secured correctly. Filling with fuel Switch off the engine.
A filler cap hook is provided.
A label on the inside of the flap shows which fuels are permitted and which are not. The capacity of the tank is approximately 15.4 gallons (70 litres).
Low fuel level warning lightFrom the time this light comes on, the range remaining is approximately 30 miles (50 km).
Outside the vehicle:Raise the catch andopen the bonnet.

SERVICE INDICATOR This is a visual reminder of when the
next service is due. This service is tobe carried out according to the man-ufacturer's servicing schedule. Operation As soon as the ignition is switched on and for 5 seconds, the spannersymbolising ''service operation'' is lit.The trip recorder display shows thedistance remaining (in round figures)before the next service. Example:
4,800 miles/km remain
before the next service is due. When the ignition comes on and for 5 sec-onds the display indicates: 5 seconds after the ignition is switched on, the total distancerecorder resumes normal operationand the display shows the total or tripdistances. The distance remaining before the next service is less than 500 miles(1,000 km). Example:
400 miles (900 km)
remain before the next service is due. When switching on the ignition and for 5 seconds, the display shows: 5 seconds after the ignition is switched on, the total distancerecorder resumes normal operationand the symbol remains lit. This indicates that a service should
be carried out shortly. The displayshows the total or trip distances. The service is overdue. Each time the ignition is switched on and for 5 seconds, the symbol andthe excess distance flash. Example:
the service is overdue by
300 miles/km. The service should be
carried out very shortly. When the ignition is switched on and for 5 seconds, the display shows: 5 seconds after the ignition is switched on, the total distancerecorder resumes normal operation
and the symbol remains lit. The display shows the total or trip distances. Note: the service spanner lights if
the two-year interval has been
exceeded (see "PEUGEOT Servic-ing" section).
