Emission Control System
In the interest of clean air
Pollution of our environment has become a problem that is of increasing concern to all of us. We urge you to join us in our efforts for cleaner air in controlling the pollutants emitted from the automobile.
Porsche has developed an emission control system that controls or reduces those parts of emissions that can be harmful to our environment. Your Porsche is equipped with such a system.
Porsche warrants the Emission Control System in your new car under the terms and conditions set forth in the Warranty Booklet.
You, as the owner of the vehicle, have the responsibility to provide regular maintenance service for the vehicle and to keep a record of all maintenance work performed. To facilitate record keeping, have services performed by authorized Porsche dealers. They have Porsche trained technicians and special tools to provide fast and efficient service.
To assure efficient operation of the Emission Control System:
fHave your vehicle maintained properly and in accordance with the recommendations described in your Maintenance Booklet. Lack of proper maintenance, as well as improper use of the vehicle, will impair the function of the emission control system and could lead to damage.
fDo not alter or remove any component of the emission control system.fDo not alter or remove any device, such as heat shields, switches, ignition wires, valves, etc., which are designed to protect your vehicle's emission control system. In addition to serious engine damage, this can result in a fire if excess raw fuel reaches the exhaust system.fDo not continue to operate your vehicle if you detect engine misfire or other unusual operating conditions.
Parking
The exhaust system becomes very hot when the engine is running and remains hot for some time after the vehicle is turned off. Flammable material close to the exhaust system could ignite.fDo not park or operate your vehicle in areas where the hot exhaust system may come in contact with dry grass, brush, fuel spill or other flammable materials.fIf your car catches on fire for any reason, call the fire department. Do not endanger your life by attempting to put out the fire.

Maintenance and Car Care 233
Cleaning in car washes
Optional add-on parts or parts that project beyond the contours of the vehicle may be damaged by design features of car washes.
The following parts are particularly at risk: – Convertible top (hot wax treatment must not be used, as the wax attacks the convertible top material),– Windshield wipers and rear wiper (always switch them off – wiper stalk in position 0 – to prevent them wiping unintentionally in intermittent or sensor operation).– Exterior mirrors (always fold in).– External antenna (always unscrew).– Roof transport system (always remove completely).– Spoilers.– Wheels (the wider the rim and the lower the tire height, the greater the risk of damage).– High-gloss or silk-gloss wheels (to prevent these from getting scratched, do not clean with the wheel-cleaning brushes of the car wash). fPlease consult the operator before using automatic car washes.fAll parts not reached by a car wash, such as door and lid seams or door sills, must be washed and polished by hand.
Information
Automatic car washes spray water at odd angles and high pressures, which are not seen in normal driving. Therefore, water can sometimes find its way into the passengers compartment during or shortly after the car wash.
Convertible top
The service life and appearance of the convertible top depend largely on expert care and operation.
Incorrect care and operation can damage the convertible top or cause it to leak.
Never remove snow and ice with sharp-edged objects.
Cleaning the convertible top
Risk of damage to the convertible top due to the cleaning jet of the high-pressure cleaning equipment or hot wax treatment. fDo not clean the convertible top with high-pressure cleaning equipment. fDo not use hot wax treatment.
Do not wash the convertible top every time you wash the vehicle.
Normally, rinsing the convertible top with clean water is sufficient.fBrush dust off the convertible top in the direction of the weave using a soft brush. fOnly in the case of heavy soiling, wet the convertible top with lukewarm water and a wash-shampoo & convertible-top cleaner and rub gently using a sponge or soft brush.Rinse off wash-shampoo & convertible-top cleaner thoroughly from the convertible top with clean water. We recommend Porsche wash-shampoo.fAfter washing, treat the convertible top at least once a year with a convertible-top care product.Do not allow the convertible-top care product to come into contact with paint or glass. If it does, remove immediately.
fIn the case of leakage in the convertible-top covering or at its seams and folds, use a convertible-top care product.fPlease observe the information on the containers. We recommend Porsche convertible-top care product.fRemove bird excrement immediately. The acid this contains makes the rubber swell and the convertible top will leak.fOpen the convertible top only when completely dry, otherwise damp stains and abrasion marks may occur which cannot be removed.fAttempt to remove spots from the convertible-top covering by rubbing carefully with a soft rubber sponge.

272 Minor Repairs
Risk of damage to the fabric, metal or paint from battery acid or electrolyte.fDo not allow battery acid to come in contact with fabric or painted surfaces.fSpilled electrolyte must be rinsed off at once with a solution of baking soda and water to neutralize the acid.
Charge state
A well-charged battery prevents starting problems and has a longer service life.
In order to avoid unintentional battery discharge:
fSwitch off unnecessary electrical loads in city traffic, on short trips or in a line of traffic.fAlways remove the ignition key when leaving the vehicle orswitch off the ignition on vehicles with Porsche Entry & Drive.fAvoid using the Porsche Communication Management system and the audio system when the engine is not running.fPlease see the chapter “CHARGING THE BATTERY” on page 274.
 Information
In the cold season in particular or if the vehicle is used primarily for short distances, it may be necessary to recharge the battery from time to time.
Battery care
fEnsure that battery is securely mounted.fKeep battery surface clean and dry.fKeep terminals and connections clean. Corrosion can be prevented by coating the terminals and connections with petroleum jelly or silicone spray.fEnsure that terminal clamps and the vent hose are firmly secured.
Winter driving
The ability of the battery to deliver and store power decreases at low outside temperatures. Moreover, the battery is more heavily loaded in the winter months, e.g. by the heated rear window, the more frequent use of additional lights, the blower and the windshield wipers, etc.fHave the battery checked before the start of winter.
Information
Keep the battery fully charged to prevent it from freezing.
A discharged battery can already freeze at –5 ºC, but a fully charged one only freezes at –40 ºC. fIf the battery is frozen, thaw it out before connecting jump leads.
Laying up the vehicle
If the vehicle is left for long periods in the garage or workshop, the doors and lids should be closed.fRemove the ignition key or disconnect the battery if necessary.
Information
fWhen the battery is disconnected, the alarm system ceases to function.
If the vehicle was locked before the battery was disconnected, the alarm will be triggered when the battery is reconnected. To deactivate the alarm system: fLock the vehicle and unlock it again.
Alarm system, central locking
fThe status of the central locking and alarm system does not change when you disconnect the battery.
Information
Even if you put your vehicle out of operation, the battery still discharges.fThe battery must be charged, i.e. connected to a charger, approximately every 6 weeks in order to preserve battery function.fStore a battery that has been removed in a dark, cool place that is not exposed to frost.
Replacing the battery
The battery is subject to normal wear: its service life depends heavily on the care you give it, climatic conditions and the conditions of use (distances, loads).
It is not possible to use the details on the battery case to determine a comparable battery that meets all the specific requirements of Porsche.fHave the battery removed and installed only by your authorized Porsche dealer.fOnly use an original Porsche battery, with the correct part number, as a replacement. Only this battery meets the specific requirements of the vehicle.
