Whenputintooperationforthefirsttime,adistanceofapprox.31miles(50km)mustbedriveninorderforthenavigationsystemtocompletetheprocessoffinecalibration.Thesameapplieswhenthetiresarechanged(e.g.summer/snowtires)ornewtiresfitted.Fulllocationaccuracyisnotyetachievedduringthefine-calibrationprocess.
Ifthevehiclehasbeentransported(e.g.ferry,cartrain),thesystemmaytakeafewminutestodeterminethecurrentlocationafterithasbeenswitchedon.
Serioustireslip(e.g.spinningwheelsonsnow)mayresultintemporarilyinaccuratenavigation.
Whenthebatteryhasbeendisconnected,itmaytakeupto15minutesbeforethenavigationsystembecomesoperationalagain.

FMreception
Avehicleisnotanidealplacetolistentoaradio.Becausethevehiclemoves,receptionconditionsareconstantlychanging.Buildings,terrain,signaldistanceandnoisefromothervehiclesareallworkingagainstgoodreception.SomeconditionsaffectingFMmayappeartobeproblemswhentheyarenot.
Thefollowingcharacteristicsarecompletelynormalforagivenreceptionarea,andtheydonotindicateanyproblemwiththeradioitself.

Fadinganddrifting
FMrangeislimitedtoabout25miles(40km),exceptforsomehighpowerstations.
Ifavehicleismovingawayfromthedesiredstation’stransmitter,thesignalwilltendtofadeand/ordrift.ThisconditionismoreprevalentwithFMthanAM,andisoftenaccompaniedbydistortion.Fadinganddriftingcanbeminimizedtoacertaindegreebycarefulattentiontofinetuningorselectionofastrongersignal.
Staticanduttering
Whentheline-of-sightlinkbetweenatransmitterandvehicleisblockedbylargebuildingsormoun-tains,theradiosoundmaybeaccompaniedwithstaticorflutteringbecauseofthecharacteristicofFM.Inasimilareffect,aflutteringnoiseissome-timesheardwhendrivingalongatree-linedroad.
Thisstaticandflutteringcanbereducedbyadjust-ingthetonecontrolforgreaterbassresponseuntilthedisturbancehaspassed.
Multipath
BecauseofthereflectingcharacteristicsofFM,directandreflectedsignalsmayreachtheantennaatthesametime(multipath)andcanceleachotherout.Asavehiclemovesthroughtheseelectronicdeadspots,thelistenermayhearamomentaryflutterorlossofreception.
Stationswapping
WhentwoFMstationsareclosetoeachother,andanelectronicdeadspot,suchasstaticormultipatharea,interruptstheoriginalsignal,sometimesthestrongersecondsignalwillbeselectedautomaticallyuntiltheoriginalonereturns.Thisswappingcanalsooccurasyoudriveawayfromtheselectedstationandapproachanotherstationofastrongersignal.
