Driver’s responsibility
Never leave your vehicle
with the RENAULT card
inside and never leave a
child (or a pet) unsupervised. With
the card in the reader, it would be
possible to start the engine or
operate electrical equipment such
as the electric windows and there is
a risk that they may trap part of
their body (neck, arms, hands, etc.).
Risk of serious injury.
RENAULT card
1 - Unlocking the doors and luggage
compartment.
2 - Locking all doors and luggage
compartment.
3 - Locking/unlocking the luggage
compartment.
4 - Integral emergency key.
The RENAULT card is used to:
- lock/unlock the doors and luggage
compartment and the fuel filler
flap (refer to the following pages);
- automatically close the electric windows and the sunroof; refer to
the paragraphs on “windows with
automatic opening” and “sunroof”
in section 3 (depending on vehicle);
- start the engine; refer to the paragraph on “Starting the engine”
in section 2.
Battery life
It is supplied by a battery which
should be replaced when the message
“Change card battery” appears on the
instrument panel (refer to the
paragraph on the “RENAULT card:
battery” in section 5).
Range of the RENAULT card
This varies according to the
environment. It is therefore
important to make sure when
handling the RENAULT card that
you do not lock or unlock the doors
by inadvertently pressing the
buttons. Advice
Do not keep your RENAULT card in
a place where it could be damaged
accidentally, such as in a back
pocket where you might sit on it.

OPENING AND CLOSING THE DOORS
Opening the doors from the
outside
Once the doors have been unlocked
or you have the hands-free
RENAULT card on you, hold
handle1and pull it towards you to
open the door.
Opening the doors from the
inside
Pull handle 2.
Lights on warning buzzer
If you have switched off the ignition
and left the lights switched on a
reminder buzzer will sound when a
door is opened.
Card reminder buzzer
A beep will let you know if you have
left the card in the reader when you
open the driver’s door, and the
“remove card” message will appear
on the instrument panel.
Special note
After switching off the engine, the
lights and any accessories that are in
operation (radio, air conditioning,
etc.) will continue to operate.
They will stop as soon as the
driver’s door is opened.
Door/luggage compartment open
buzzer
If a door (or luggage compartment) is
open or not properly closed, as soon
as the vehicle reaches a speed of
approximately 6 mph (10 km/h), the
message “luggage compartment
open” or “door open” (depending on
what is open) will appear on the
instrument panel accompanied by a
warning light.

Locking (continued)
If your belt becomes completely
jammed:

unwinds;
- then allow the belt to rewind automatically,
- unwind it again,
- if there is still a problem, contact your RENAULT Dealer.
çThis warning light on the
instrument panel or
dashboard goes out to let you
know that the seat belt has been

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)
Load limiter
Above a certain severity of impact,
this mechanism is used to limit the
force of the belt against the body so
that it is at an acceptable level.
Driver and passenger airbags
Fitted to the driver and passenger
side.
The word “Airbag” on the steering
wheel and the dashboard (airbag
zone A) and an airbag marking in the
lower section of the windscreen
indicate the presence of this
equipment.
Each airbag system consists of:
- an airbag and gas generator fitted on the steering wheel for the driver
and in the dashboard for the front
passenger;
- an intelligent computer for both systems, which includes an impact
sensor and a monitor controlling
the electrical trigger system for the
gas generator;
- a single
åwarning light on the
instrument panel;
- an advanced frontal sensor completes this system. The airbag system uses the
principles of pyrotechnics. This
explains why, when the airbag
inflates, it will generate heat,
produce smoke (this does not mean
that a fire is about to start) and
make a noise upon detonation. In a
situation where an airbag is
required, it will inflate immediately
and this may cause some minor,
superficial grazing to the skin or
other problems.

1.27
METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)
Operation
This system is only operational
when the ignition is switched on.
In a severe frontalimpact, the
airbags inflate rapidly, cushioning
the impact of the driver’s head and
chest against the steering wheel and
the front passenger against the
dashboard. The airbags then deflate
immediately so that the passengers
are not in any way hindered from
leaving the vehicle.
Special feature of the front
airbag
Depending on the severity of the
impact, this has two deployment
volumes and incorporates an
internal ventilation system to
prevent burns caused by the
escaping gases:
- “low volume” airbag: this is the first level of deployment;
- “large volume” airbag: the airbag seams tear so that a greater volume
of gas is released into the airbag
(for the most severe impacts).
Operating faults
Warning light 1will light up on the
instrument panel when the ignition
is switched on and then will go out
after a few seconds.
If it does not light up when the
ignition is switched on, or comes on
when the engine is running, there is
a fault in the system.
Consult your RENAULT Dealer as
soon as possible. Your protection
will be reduced until this fault is
rectified.

DANGER
Since front passenger airbag
triggering and the position
of a rear-facing child seat
are incompatible, it is not
permitted to install such a seat in
this position unless the vehicle is
fitted with an airbag deactivation
device. The child may suffer very
serious injuries if the airbag is
deployed.
The label (on the dashboard) and
the markings (on the sun visor)
remind you of these instructions.
CHILD SAFETY (continued)
Deactivating the front passenger
airbags
(if fitted )
To fit a rear-facing child seat on the
front passenger seat, it is essentialto
deactivate the front passenger seat
additional restraint systems (frontal
and side airbags and lap
pretensioner) and the anti-
submarining airbag (for the three-
door version). To deactivate the airbags:
when the
vehicle is stationary, push and turn
lock 1to the OFF position.
With the ignition on, it is essential
to check that warning light 2,
AIRBAG OFF , is illuminated on the
instrument panel or on centre
display 3 and, depending on the
vehicle, check that the message
“passenger airbag OFF” is
displayed.
This light remains continuously lit
to let you know that you can fit a
child seat.
