system reduces the engine output to reduce wheel
spin. The engine speed will \fe reduced even if the
accelerator is depressed to the floor. \bf maximum
engine power is needed to free a stuck vehicle, turn
the VDC system off.
To turn off the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system,
push the VDC OFF switch. The
indicator light will
illuminate on.
Push the VDC OFF switch again or restart the engine
to turn ON the system.
WARNING:
. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) sys-
tem is designed to help improve driving
stability but does not prevent accidents due
to abrupt steering operation at high speeds
or due to careless or dangerous driving
techniques. Reduce vehicle speed and be
especially careful when driving and corner-
ing on slippery surfaces and always drive
carefully.
. If engine related parts such as a muffler are
not standard equipment or the “ESP OFF”
indicator or “SLIP”indicator or both indica-
tor lights may illuminate.
. Do not modify the vehicle’s suspension. If
suspension parts such as shock absorbers,
struts, springs, stabilizer bars and bushings
are not RENAULT approved or are extremely
deteriorated the ESP system may not oper-
ate properly. This could adversely affect
vehicle handling performance, and the
“ESP OFF” indicator or “SLIP”indicator or
both indicator lights may illuminate.
. If brake related parts such as brake pads,
rotors and calipers are not standard equip-
ment or are extremely deteriorated, the “ESP
OFF” indicator or “SLIP”indicator or both
indicator lights may illuminate.
. When driving on extremely inclined surfaces
such as higher banked corners, the ESP
system may not operate properly and the
“ESP OFF” indicator or “SLIP”indicator or
both indicator lights may illuminate. Do not
drive on these types of roads. .
When driving on unstable surfaces such as a
turntable, ferry, elevator or ramp, the “ESP
OFF” indicator or “SLIP”indicator or both
indicator lights may illuminate. This is not a
malfunction. Restart the engine after driving
onto a stable surface.
. If wheels or tires other than those recom-
mended are used, the ESP system may not
operate properly and “SLIP”indicator light
may illuminate.
. The ESP system is not a substitute for winter
tires or tire chains on a snow-covered road.
. When the ESP system is operating, the “SL\bP”
indicator
in the instrument panel \flinks.
. \bf the “SL\bP” indicator \flinks, the road conditions
are slippery. Be sure to adjust your speed and
driving to these conditions. Be sure to drive
carefully. (See “Slip indicator light” (P.2-17) and
“Electronic Sta\fility Program (ESP) off indicator
light” (P.2-16) .)
. \bndicator light
\bf a malfunction occurs in the system, the “SL\bP”
indicator lights illuminate in the instrument
panel. As long as these indicators are illuminated,
the ESP system function is canceled.
The ESP system uses a Brake Limited Slip Differential
(BLSD) function to improve vehicle traction. The BLSD
system works when one of the driving wheels is
spinning on a slippery surface. The BLSD system
\frakes the spinning wheel, which distri\futes the
driving power to the other drive wheel. \bf the vehicle
is operated with the ESP system turned off, all ESP
system functions will \fe turned off.
The BLSD system and ABS will still operate with the
ESP system off. \bf the BLSD system is activated, the
“SL\bP” indicator light will \flink and you may hear a

Do not attempt to start the engine by p\fshing the
vehicle\b
CAUTION:
.Automatic Transmission (AT)/Continuously
Variable Transmission (CVT) model cannot
be started by pushing. Attempting to do so
may cause damage to the transmission.
. Three-way catalyst equipped model should
not be started by pushing. Attempting to do
so may cause damage to the catalyst.
. Never try to start the engine by towing.
When the engine starts, the forward surge
could cause the vehicle to collide with the
towing vehicle.
. Stop/Start (Idling Stop) System equipped
model cannot be started by pushing the
vehicle.
WARNING:
.Never continue driving if your vehicle over-
heats. Doing so could cause a vehicle fire.
. Never open the hood if steam is coming out.
. Never remove the radiator cap while the
engine is hot. If the radiator cap is removed
when the engine is hot, pressurized hot
water will spurt out and possibly cause
burning, scalding or serious injury.
. If steam or coolant is coming from the
engine, stand clear of the vehicle to prevent
getting burned.
. Be careful not to allow your hands, hair,
jewelry or clothing to come into contact with,
or to get caught in the cooling fan or drive
belts. The engine cooling fan will start at any
time.
If yo\fr vehicle is overheating (indicated by the high
temperat\fre indicator) , or if yo\f feel a lack of engine
power, detect \fn\fs\fal noise, etc\b, take the following
steps:
1\b Safely move the vehicle off the road away from traffic\b
2\b T\frn on the hazard indicator flasher lights\b
3\b Apply the parking brake\b
4\b A\ftomatic Transmission (AT)/Contin\fo\fsly Vari- able Transmission (CVT) model: Move the selector
lever to the “P” (Park) position\b
Man\fal Transmission (MT) model: Move the shift
lever to the “N” (Ne\ftral) position\b
DO NOT STOP THE ENGINE . 5\b Open all windows\b
6\b T\frn off the air conditioner\b Set the temperat\fre
control to maxim\fm hot and fan control to
maxim\fm speed\b
7\b Get o\ft from the vehicle\b
8\b Vis\fally inspect and listen for steam or coolant escaping from the radiator before opening the
hood\b Wait \fntil no steam or coolant can be seen
before proceeding\b
9\b Open the engine hood\b
10\b Vis\fally inspect if the cooling fan is r\fnning\b
11\b Vis\fally inspect the radiator and radiator hoses for leakage\b
If the cooling fan is not r\fnning or the coolant is
leaking, stop the engine\b
12\b After the engine cools down, check the coolant level in the reservoir with the engine r\fnning\b Do
not open the radiator cap.
13\b Add coolant to the reservoir if necessary\b

Tires*:
Check the pressure with a gauge often and alwa\fs
prior to long distance trips. If necessar\f, ad\bust the
pressure in all tires, including the spare, to the
pressure specified. Check carefull\f for damage, cuts
or excessive wear.
Tire rotation*:
Tires should be rotated ever\f 10,000 km (6,000
miles) . However, the timing for tire rotation ma\f var\f
according to \four driving habits and the road surface
conditions.
Wheel alignment and balance (for Europe):
If the vehicle should pull to either side while driving on
a straight and level road, or if \fou detect uneven or
abnormal tire wear, there ma\f be a need for wheel
alignment.
If the steering wheel or seat vibrates at normal highwa\f
speeds, wheel balancing ma\f be needed.
Windshield:
Clean the windshield on a regular basis. Check the
windshield at least ever\f six months for cracks or other
damage. Have a damaged windshield repaired b\f a
qualified repair facilit\f.
Wiper blades*:
Check for cracks or wear if the\f do not wipe properl\f.
Inside vehicle
The maintenance items listed here should be checked
on a regular basis, such as when performing periodic
maintenance, cleaning the vehicle, etc.Accelerator pedal:
Check the pedal for smooth operation and make sure
that the pedal does not catch or require uneven effort.
Keep the floor mats awa\f from the pedal.
Brake pedal*:
Check the pedal for smooth operation and make sure
that it has the proper distance under it when
depressed full\f. Check the brake booster function.
Keep the floor mats awa\f from the pedal.
Parking brake*:
Check that the pedal/lever has the proper distance of
travel.
Seat belts:
Check that all parts of the seat belt s\fstem (for
example, buckles, anchors, ad\busters and retractors)
operate properl\f and smoothl\f, and that the\f are
installed securel\f. Check the belt webbing for cuts,
fra\fing, wear or damage.
Steering wheel:
Check for changes in the steering conditions, such as
excessive free pla\f, hard steering or strange noises.
Warning lights and chimes:
Make sure that all warning lights and chimes are
operating properl\f.
Windshield defogger:
Check that the air comes out of the defogger outlets
properl\f and in good quantit\f when operating the
heater or air conditioner.
Windshield wiper and washer*:
Check that the wipers and washer operate properl\f
and that the wipers do not streak.
Under hood and vehicle
The maintenance items listed here should be checked
periodicall\f (for example, each time \fou check the
engine oil or refuel) .
Battery*:
Check the fluid level in each cell. It should be between
the UPPER and LOWER levels. Vehicles operated in
high temperatures or under severe conditions require
frequent checks of the batter\f fluid level.
Brake and clutch fluid level*:
Make sure that the brake and clutch fluid level is
between the MAX and MIN lines on the reservoir.
Engine coolant level*:
Check the coolant level when the engine is cold.
Engine drive belts*:
Make sure the drive belts are not fra\fed, worn, cracked
or oil\f.
Engine oil level*:
Check the level on the dipstick after parking the vehicle
on a level surface and turning off the engine.
Fluid leaks:
Check under the vehicle for fuel, oil, water or other fluid
leaks after the vehicle has been parked for a while.
Water dripping from the air conditioner after use is
normal. If \fou should notice an\f leaks or if fuel fumes
are evident, check for the cause and have it corrected
immediatel\f.
