Fault finding – Introduction
1. SCOPE OF THIS DOCUMENT
This document presents the fault finding procedure applicable to all computers with the following specifications:

3. REMINDERS
Procedure
To save power, the UCH on the Laguna II Phase 2, Espace IV phase 1, 2 and 4, and Vel Satis phase 1 and 2
interrupts the + after ignition feed supply after 3 minutes.
To run fault finding on a computer, it is possible to force the + after ignition feed for 1 hour by applying the following
procedure:
– Press the card unlocking button,
– Insert the card into the reader,
– press the start button (interrupting the timed + after ignition feed mode),
– press the start button for more than 5 seconds, until the immobiliser warning light flashes rapidly (4 Hz).
This forced + after ignition feed mode remains active for 1 hour.
Pressing the start button or removing the card from the card reader interrupts the forced + after ignition feed, but
does not interrupt the time period for the forced + after ignition feed. Until one hour has elapsed, activating the +
after ignition feed will restart forced + after ignition feed for the remaining time. Vehicle(s): Vel Satis phase 1

Fault finding – System operation
PRESENTATION OF THE PARKING BRAKE:
The electronic parking brake provides the following functions:
– keeps the vehicle stationary when stopped (parking brake).
– 'dynamic' emergency brake (if the main brakes fail).
– automatic braking force adjustment according to the slope (adapted application),
– electronically-assisted parking brake application when the engine is stopped (depending on configuration),
– easy start with electronically-assisted parking brake release (depending on configuration),
– manual application and release by pulling on the lever.
SYSTEM COMPONENTS AND OPERATION:
The system consists of the following components:
●Control lever with brake on indicator light.
– For applying and releasing the parking brake.
●Control unit (computer) housing an electric motor, the brake cable hooks, angle sensor and force sensor.
–The angle sensor controls locking according to the angle of the slope.
–The force sensor checks and corrects the force applied to the brakes.
●Clutch pedal position sensor to help with pulling away.
– Informs the computer of the vehicle's clutch position (the position of the pedal enables the torque necessary for
vehicle movement to be obtained).
●Tw o mechanical cables
– Convey the mechanical force to the rear brakes.
●Emergency control cable (in the central storage compartment on the LAGUNA, VEL SATIS and ESPACE and in
the boot on the SCENIC).
– Enables the rear brakes to be released in the event of the battery or parking brake failing.
●Warning lights and symbol on the instrument panel.
– Indicate application, releasing and any faults on the parking brake.
Note:
The parking brake cable play compensation is performed automatically by the control unit.

GENERAL OPERATING MODE FOR THE COMPUTER:
The electronic parking brake computer operates in two modes: STANDBY mode and SWITCH ON mode.
●SWITCH ON mode:
Available functions:
– Manual application and release, assisted application and release and emergency braking (steering column
unlocked).
– Full system fault finding (all faults can be identified).
Switch on conditions (3 possibilities):
– The UCH sends a switch on request to the parking brake computer via the multiplex network when the vehicle
is opened or the card is inserted in the reader.
– Braking request via the parking brake control lever.
– Battery voltage more than 13.2 V, if the vehicle has been parked for less than 24 hours.
●STANDBY mode:
Available functions:
– Monitoring of the braking force and slope angle for 24 hours (to ensure parking brake application).
– Only application is authorised (using the lever).
– Restricted system fault finding (the computer can no longer identify all faults).
– Release not authorised.
Conditions for setting to standby:
– The UCH sends a "set to standby" request to the parking brake computer via the multiplex network after the
ignition is switched off and the vehicle is locked (after a few seconds). The parking brake computer's STANDBY
mode will be confirmed by the lever warning light going out (special note: the battery voltage must be less than
13.2 V).
CABLE RESETTING:
The parking brake cable is locked after the control lever is released or after driving at over 1 mph (2 km/h) (switched
on mode).
When the electronic parking brake system locks, it makes a sound that lasts for a few seconds and ends with
clicking (play compensation is automatic).WARNING
Before using the emergency control, it is important to put the vehicle into gear and wedge one wheel if necessary
(on a slope).

WARNING LIGHT MANAGEMENT
Indications of a level 1 fault:
–Check Parking Brake message on the instrument panel display.
–orange warning light (P in a triangle) on the instrument panel comes on.
–SERVICE warning light comes on.
Indications of a level 2 fault:
–Parking brake defective message on the instrument panel display.
–1-second audible warning (from the instrument panel),
–orange warning light (P in a triangle) on the instrument panel comes on.
–SERVICE warning light comes on,
–Red indicator light (brake pad light) on the instrument panel comes on.
– parking brake control lever indicator light flashes.
Warning occurs:
– when the door is opened and a gear is engaged on an automatic transmission,
– when the vehicle is moving, despite the parking brake being applied,
– when the door is opened, with the engine running and the parking brake released,
– when the door is opened, with the engine stopped and the parking brake released, Note:
When the lever warning light stops flashing, the instrument panel message disappears. If the system has a level 2
fault, whenever the lever is used, the indicator light on the lever starts flashing again and the fault message
reappears.

B/ COMMISSIONING A NEW COMPUTER
1/ COMPUTER CONFIGURATION
– Carry out configuration in accordance with the customer's request (see Configurations and
programming).
2/ VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER ENTRY
– run command VP004 Write VIN.
– enter the vehicle identification number using the diagnostic tool keypad,
–confirm.
3/ COMPUTER CALIBRATION AND COMMISSIONING
–In + after ignition feed, run command VP011 Computer calibration and initialisation and carry out
the following 4 steps.
STEP 1 VEHICLE MASS CALIBRATION
Screen 1:
With the dropdown menu, enter the following information:
– vehicle type,
– engine type,
– gearbox type,
– type of driving style,
– equipment level (for Vdiag 04),
– confirm the operation by pressing Next.
Screen 2:
– reread the highlighted information.
– If the highlighted information does not match the vehicle, return to the selection screen by pressing Back,
– if the highlighted information is correct, continue with step 2 by pressing Next.
STAGE 2 INITIALISING A NEW PARKING BRAKE
– Initialise the brake by pressing YES (you should hear a noise as the brake is applied and then released).
– Proceed to step 3 by pressing Next.
STEP 3 SLOPE INITIALISATION
– Calibrate the slope sensor by pressing Confirm. Proceed to step 4 by pressing Next.
STEP 4 INITIALISING ASSISTED BRAKING
– Carry out initialisation by pressing Confirm.
– Return to the selection list screen by pressing Finish. Note:
If the vehicle identification number is not entered and command CF007 Vehicle configuration is not run, step 3
of initialising the computer will not work.
WARNING
To initialise the computer, the vehicle must be on a horizontal surface with the brake cables correctly fitted
(connected to the rear brake callipers) and nobody must be working on the vehicle.

NOTESPriorities when dealing with a number of faults:
Deal with faults DF035 Undervoltage, DF055 Battery undervoltage and DF054
Battery voltage too high first, if they are present or stored.
Conditions for applying the fault finding procedure to a stored fault:
The fault is declared present after the forced + after ignition is switched on
(seeIntroduction) and an application request using the control lever.
Special notes:
The fault does not usually come from the electronic parking brake computer.
Note:
After a release request, the fault becomes stored.
Replacing the lever with the parking brake applied may cause this fault. If this fault
appears after replacing the lever, release the parking brake and carry out the
procedure again.
Only for Vdiag 08, 0C and 0D:
If there is a stored fault, refer to the statuses and parameters when it appears.
Explanation of counters: see Introduction section.
If the fault is stored and PR018 = 0 and PR022 > 25 clear the fault: do not take this
fault into account.
If the fault is stored and PR019 < 3, clear the fault: do not take this fault into account.
Check that the electronic parking brake control lever connector is in good condition and also check its clips
(terminals).
Repair if necessary.
Check that there is a 12 V + before ignition supply on track 6 of the electronic parking brake control lever:
see wiring diagram.
Repair if necessary.
Disconnect the electronic parking brake control lever connector in order to check the insulation, continuity and
absence of interference resistance on the following connection:

If the fault is still present, replace the parking brake control lever (the indicator light cannot be separated).
If the fault persists, contact the Techline.
AFTER REPAIRIf the computer has been replaced (at the request of the Techline), initialise the
electronic parking brake computer (see Replacement of components).
Issue several braking and release commands to confirm the repair.
Deal with any other faults.

NOTESPriorities when dealing with a number of faults:
First deal with faults DF046 Brake motor/cables connection, DF042 Force sensor,
DF035 Undervoltage, DF041 Slope sensor, DF049 Brake application, DF054
Battery voltage too high and DF055 Battery undervoltage, if they are present or
stored.
If none of these faults is present or stored, the parking brake computer is not normally
the cause.
Conditions for applying the fault finding procedure to a stored fault:
Apply the fault finding procedure even if the fault is stored.
Note:
The fault does not remain present after it has been detected.
1. DEF
NOTESSpecial notes:
– This fault indicates that the electronic parking brake
computer detected rear wheel movement although the
parking brake was applied with maximum force.
– It may be associated with 2.DEF.
If this fault is not associated with the faults mentioned
above, check the conformity of the parking brake's
mechanical force line:
– Condition and conformity of rear brake pads.
– Parking brake cables correctly fitted.
– Good condition of the parking brake cables (no seizing
or deterioration).
– Conformity, condition and correct operation of the rear
brake callipers.
This fault is an operational warning. Check the context in
which it appears.
It may appear during:
– incorrect use of a roller test bench which drives the
rear wheels (MOT test),
– forced assisted release when starting, when the
starting conditions have not been met,
– vehicle overload on a very steep slope (maximum
permissible all-up weight exceeded + angle > 18°: e.g.
towing a trailer or a caravan).
AFTER REPAIRIf the computer has been replaced (at the request of the Techline), initialise the
electronic parking brake computer (see Replacement of components).
Issue several braking and release commands to confirm the repair.
Deal with any other faults.

NOTESSpecial notes:
– This fault indicates that the electronic parking brake
computer detected front wheel movement although the
parking brake was applied with maximum force.
When this fault appears on its own it is an operating warning
that indicates that the vehicle's conditions of use are on the
limit (the braking system and parking brake are not normally
the cause).
This fault is an operational warning. Check the context in
which it appears.
It may appear during:
– an application request, whilst the vehicle is still being
driven,
– forced assisted release when starting, when the
starting conditions have not been met,
– parked on a steep slope with slippery surface,
– incorrect use of a roller test bench which drives the
front wheels (MOT test).
If the fault is stored, refer to the statuses and
parameters when it appears. Explanation of counters:
seeIntroduction section.
If the fault is stored and PR018 = 0 and PR022 > 25 clear
the fault: do not take this fault into account.
Using the diagnostic tool, display the wheel speed parameters on the parameters screen.
When stationary, these parameters must show 0 mph. If this is not the case, carry out fault finding on the anti-
lock braking system (see 38C, Anti-lock braking system).
Check that the parking brake mechanical tensioning line is correct:
– Parking brake cables correctly fitted.
– Good condition of the parking brake cables (no seizing or deterioration).
– Conformity, condition and proper functioning of the rear brake callipers.
– Condition and conformity of rear brake pads.
Carry out the necessary repairs.
Check that the vehicle is not overloaded.
Check that the vehicle's tyres are not bald.
If the fault persists, contact the Techline.
AFTER REPAIRIf the computer has been replaced (at the request of the Techline), initialise the
electronic parking brake computer (see Replacement of components).
Issue several braking and release commands to confirm the repair.
Deal with any other faults.
