The following airbags will be deployed in the event of a severe side collision.
▶ Front side airbag on the side of the accident.
▶ Rear side airbag on the side of the accident.
▶ Head airbags on the side of the accident.
When an airbag is deployed, the following events occur. ▶ The interior light comes on (if the automatic operation of the interior light is
switched on - switch 
).
▶ The hazard warning lights are switched on.
▶ All doors are unlocked.
▶ The fuel supply to the engine is interrupted.
When there is no air bag deployment?
With minor frontal and side collisions, rear collision, overturning of the vehicle
or vehicle roll-over there is no airbag deployment.

Safe distance to steering wheel
In the event of a severe frontal collision, the front airbags offer additional pro-
tection for the head and chest area of the driver and front passenger.
The driver's front airbag is located in the steering wheel, the front passenger airbag is located in the instrument panel above the glove compartment » Fig. 8
-  .
The airbags inflate in front of the driver and front passenger when they are
deployed » Fig. 8 -
 . The forward movement of the driver and of the front
passenger is cushioned when they make contact with the fully inflated airbag
and the risk of injury to head and chest is thus reduced.
WARNINGInformation on correct seating position■It is important that the driver and front passenger maintain a distance of
at least 25 cm to the steering wheel or dashboard A
» Fig. 9 . Not maintain-
ing this minimum distance will mean that the airbag system will not be able
to properly protect you - hazard! The front seats and the head restraints
must always also be correctly adjusted to match the body size of the occu-
pant.

The airbag develops enormous forces when triggered, which can lead to
injuries if the sitting position or seated position is not correct.
■
There must not by any further persons, animals or objects positioned be-
tween the front seated occupants and the deployment area of the airbag. 

▶The cut or puncture is larger than 4 mm.
▶ The tyre wall is damaged.
▶ After the expiration date (see inflation bottle).
Preparations for using the breakdown kit
Read and observe
on page 187 first.
The following preparatory work must be carried out before using the puncturerepair kit.

Switch off the engine.
›
For vehicles with manual transmission select 1st gear.
›
On vehicles with automatic transmission place the selector lever in the P po-
sition.
›
Firmly apply the handbrake.
›
Check that you can carry out the repairs with the breakdown kit » page 186.
›
Uncouple any trailers.
›
Remove the breakdown kit from the boot.
›
Stick the sticker

Unscrew the valve cap.
›
Use the valve remover

to unscrew the valve core and place it on a clean
surface (rag, paper, etc.).
Sealing and inflating the tyre

Forcefully shake the tyre inflater bottle

forth several times.

Firmly screw the inflation hose

onto the tyre inflater bottle

. The film on
the cap is pierced automatically.

Remove the plug from the inflation hose

and plug the open end fully onto
the tyre valve.
›
Hold the bottle

with the bottom facing upwards and fill all of the sealing
agent from the tyre inflator bottle into the tyre.
›
Remove the filler plug from the tyre valve.
›
Screw the valve core back into the tyre valve using the valve remover

.
Inflating›Screw the air compressor tyre inflation hose 8 » Fig. 186 on page 187 firmly
onto the tyre valve.›
For vehicles with Manual transmission move the lever into the neutral posi-
tion and apply the parking brake firmly.
›
On vehicles with automatic transmission place the selector lever in the P po-
sition.
›
Check that the air release valve

is closed.
›
Start the engine and run it in idle.
›
Plug the connector

into 12 volt socket » page 88.
›
Switch on the air compressor with the ON and OFF switch

›
Allow the air compressor to run until a pressure of 2.0 - 2.5 bar is achieved.
Maximum run time of 8 minutes » .
›
Switch off the air compressor.
›
If you cannot reach an air pressure of 2.0 - 2.5 bar, unscrew the tyre inflation
hose
8
from the tyre valve.
›
Drive the vehicle 10 metres forwards or backwards to allow the sealing agent
to “distribute” in the tyre.
›
Firmly screw the tyre inflation hose

back onto the tyre valve and repeat
the inflation process.
›
Switch off the air compressor.
›
Remove the tyre inflation hose
8
from the tyre valve.
Once a tyre inflation pressure of 2.0 - 2.5 bar has been achieved, you can con- tinue the journey.
WARNING■ If the tyre does not inflate to at least. 2.0 bar, the damage is too great.
The sealing agent cannot be used to seal the tyre.  Do not drive the vehi-
cle! Seek help from a specialist garage.■
The tyre inflation hose and air compressor may get hot as the tyre is be-
ing inflated – risk of burning.
CAUTION
Switch off the air compressor after running 8 minutes at the latest – risk of
overheating! Allow the air compressor to cool a few minutes before switching
