Rear viscous limited slip differential (for S models)
CAUTION
Never start the engine while a tire on one side is jacked up, as
the vehicle may move. If one rear tire is spinning in mud, avoid continued spinning at
high speed as this could adversely affect the LSD. If a different size rear tire is temporarily used (as in an emer-
gency), it will adversely affect the LSD. Always replace it with aregular size tire as soon as possible.

enc e in revolutions b etween the rig ht and left rear wheels that may b e
c aused b y c ertain d riving c ond itions, thereb y imp ro ving d riving stab ility
on snow-c overed , mud d y or other slip p ery road s. Power steering
CAUTION
Do not hold the steering wheel at the fully locked position left or right for more than five seconds. This may damage the powersteering pump.
The p ower steering system op erates only when the en g ine is running .
If you lose p ower steering assist b ec ause the eng in e stop s or the system
fails to func tion, you c an steer b ut it will take m uc h more effort.

When rep lac ing a tire, make sure you use only the s ame size, c irc um-
ferenc e, c onstruc tion, b rand , and load rang e as the orig inal tires listed on
the tire p lac ard . Using other sizes, c irc umferenc e or c onstruc tion may
result in severe mec hanic al d amag e to the d rive tra in of your vehic le and
may affec t rid e, hand ling , b raking , sp eed ometer/od o meter c alib ration, and
c learanc e b etween the b od y and tires. It also may b e d ang erous and lead
to loss of vehic le c ontrol. Always c hec k the c old tire p ressure b efore starting to d rive. The rec -
ommend ed tire p ressure is p rovid ed on the tire p lac ard , whic h is loc ated
und er the d oor latc h on the d river ’s sid e.
Tire c hains should always b e p lac ed on the front wh eels only.
There are some p rec autions that you must ob serve wh en towing your
vehic le. For d etail information, see the “Towing ” sec tion in this c hap ter.
Off road driving
WARNING
Always maintain a safe driving speed according to the road
and weather conditions in order to avoid having an accident on asharp turn, during sudden braking or under other similar condi-tions. Always use the utmost care in driving – overconfidence
because you are driving an all wheel drive vehicle could easilylead to a serious accident.
Bec ause of the AWD feature and hig her g round c leara nc e, your Sub aru
c an b e d riven on ord inary road s or off-road . But p l ease keep in mind that
an AWD Sub aru is a p asseng er c ar and is neither a c onventional off-road
vehic le nor an all-terrain vehic le. If you d o take your Sub aru off-road , c er-
tain c ommon sense p rec autions suc h as the following should b e taken:

Rememb er to d rive with c are at all times reg ard less of the typ e of tires on
your vehic le. Tire chains
Driving on snowy g rad es or ic y road s may req uire th e use of tire c hains,
in whic h c ase p ut the c hains on the front wheels on ly. Use only SAE
c lass S typ e c hains that are of the c orrec t size fo r your tires so as not to
d amag e the vehic le b od y or susp ension.
When d riving with tire c hains, d rive at sp eed s b elo w 19 mp h (30 km/h).
When a temp orary sp are tire is on a front wheel, re p lac e the temp orary
sp are tire with the rear tire on the same sid e of t he vehic le, and then fit
c hains on the front tires.
Always use the utmost c are when d riving with tire c hains — overc onfi-
d enc e b ec ause you are d riving with tire c hains c oul d easily lead to a
serious ac c id ent.
Rocking the vehicle
If you must roc k the vehic le to free it from snow, sand , or mud , d ep ress the
ac c elerator p ed al slig htly and move the selec tor le ver b ac k and forth
b etween “D ” and “R ” rep eated ly. Do not rac e the eng ine. For the b est p os-
sib le trac tion, avoid sp inning the wheels when tryi ng to free the vehic le.
When the road surfac e is extremely slip p ery, you c a n ob tain b etter trac -
tion b y starting the vehic le with the transmission in 2nd than 1st (b oth for
MT and AT).
Refer to the “Automatic transmission ” sec tion in this c hap ter for informa-
tion on hold ing the transmission in 2nd p osition.
Corrosion protection
Refer to the “Corrosion p rotec tion ” sec tion (c hap ter 10).

Using a warm water washer
Keep a g ood d istanc e of 12 inc hes (30 c m) or more b etween the
washer nozzle and the vehic le. Do not wash the same area c ontinuously.
If a stain will not c ome out easily, wash b y hand . Some warm water
washers are of the hig h temp erature, hig h p ressure typ e and they c an
d amag e or d eform the resin p arts suc h as mould ing s, or c ause water
to leak into the vehic le.
Waxing and polishing
Always wash and d ry the vehic le b efore waxing and p olishing .
Use a g ood q uality p olish and wax and ap p ly them ac c ord ing to the
manufac turer ’s instruc tions. Wax or p olish when the p ainted surf ac e is
c ool.
Be sure to p olish and wax the c hrome trim, as well as the p ainted sur-
fac es. Loss of wax on a p ainted surfac e lead s to lo ss of the orig inal lus-
ter and also q uic kens the d eterioration of the surf ac e. It is rec ommend ed
that a c oat of wax b e ap p lied at least onc e a month , or whenever the
surfac e no long er rep els water.
If the ap p earanc e of the p aint has d iminished to th e p oint where the lus-
ter or tone c annot b e restored , lig htly p olish the surfac e with a fine-
g rained c omp ound . Never p olish just the affec ted ar ea, b ut inc lud e the
surround ing area as well. Always p olish in only one d irec tion. A No. 2000
g rain c omp ound is rec ommend ed . Never use a c oarse-g rained c om-
p ound . Coarser g rained c omp ound s have a smaller g ra in-size numb er
and c ould d amag e the p aint. After p olishing with a c omp ound , c oat with
wax to restore the orig inal luster. Freq uent p olish ing with a c omp ound or
an inc orrec t p olishing tec hniq ue will result in rem oving the p aint layer
and exp osing the und erc oat. When in d oub t, it is al ways b est to c ontac t
your SUBARU d ealer or an auto p aint sp ec ialist. Cleaning aluminum wheels
Promp tly wip e the aluminum wheels c lean of any kind of g rime or
ag ent. If d irt is left on too long , it may b e d iffi c ult to c lean off.

Tires and wheels WARNING
When replacing a tire, make sure you use only the same size,
circumferece, construction, brand, and load range as the original tires listed on the tire placard. Using other sizes, circumferecesor construction may result in severe mechanical damage to thedrivetrain of your vehicle and may affect ride, handling, braking,
speedometer/odometer calibration, and clearance between thebody and tires. It also may be dangerous and lead to loss of ve-hicle control. Do not use a combination of radial, belted bias or bias tires
since it may cause dangerous handling characteristics and leadto an accident. Do not let air out of warm tires to adjust pressure. Doing so
will result in low tire pressure.
The tires should b e c hec ked freq uently for p rop er t ire p ressure, wear,
and c uts. Tire pressure
For the b est b alanc e b etween fuel ec onomy, tire lif e, rid e c omfort, and
hand ling , tire p ressure should b e maintained in ac c ord anc e with sp ec ifi-

11-42c ations. Chec k the tire p ressure when the tires are
c old . Cold means that
the vehic le has b een p arked for three hours or has b een d riven less than
1 mile (1.6 km).

Adjusting the tire pressure
The tire p lac ard shows the rec ommend ed tire p ressur es at lig ht load ,
at full load and when towing a trailer. If the vehi c le is load ed with three
oc c up ants or less, ad just the tire p ressure to the level rec ommend ed
for lig ht load . If the vehic le is more load ed , ad ju st it to the level rec om-
mend ed for full load . When towing a trailer, ad just it to the level rec -
ommend ed for that op eration.
Tire rotation
Tire wear will vary with eac h wheel. To inc rease th e life of tires and keep
wear uniform, it is b est to rotate them every 7,500 miles (12,500 km).
When rotating tires, rep lac e any unevenly worn or d amag ed tire. After
rotating the tires, ad just tire p ressure and b e sur e to c hec k wheel nut
tig htness.
