Congratulations on choosing a SUBARU vehicle. This Owner’s Man-
ual has all the information necessary to keep your SUBARU in excel-
lent condition and to properly maintain the emission control system
for minimizing emission pollutants. We urge you to read this manual
carefully so that you may understand your vehicle and its operation.
For information not found in this Owner’s Manual, such as details
concerning repairs or adjustments, please contact the dealer from
whom you purchased your SUBARU or the nearest SUBARU dealer. The information, specifications and illustrations found in this manual
are those in effect at the time of printing. FUJI HEAVY INDUSTRIES
LTD. reserves the right to change specifications and designs at any
time without prior notice and without incurring any obligation to
make the same or similar changes on vehicles previously sold. This
Owner’s Manual applies to all models and covers all equipment, in-
cluding factory installed options. Some explanations, therefore may

Seat, seatbelt and SRS airbags

Automatic/Emergency Locking Retrac- tor (A/ELR)
Each passenger’s seatbelt has an Automatic/Emer-
gency Locking Retractor (A/ELR). The Automatic/
Emergency Locking Retractor normally functions as
an Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR). The A/ELR
has an additional locking mode “Automatic Locking
Retractor (ALR) mode” intended to secure a child re-
straint system. When the seatbelt is once drawn out
completely and is then retracted even slightly, the re-
tractor locks the seatbelt in that position and the seat-
belt cannot be extended. As the belt is rewinding,
clicks will be heard which indicate the retractor func-
tions as ALR. When the seatbelt is retracted fully, ALR
mode is released.
When securing a child restraint system on the passen-
gers’ seats, the seatbelt must be changed over to the
Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) mode.
When the child restraint system is removed, make
sure that the retractor is restored to the Emergency
Locking Retractor (ELR) function by allowing the seat-
belt to retract fully.
For instructions on how to convert the retractor to the
ALR mode and restore it to the ELR mode, see the
“Child restraint systems” section in this chapter. „
Seatbelt warning light and chime
Your vehicle is equipped with a seatbelt warning de-
vice at the driver’s seat.
This device causes the seatbelt warning light on the
instrument panel to light up for about six seconds
when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position
to remind the driver to wear the seatbelt. If the driver’s
seatbelt is not fastened, a warning chime sounds at
the same time. „ Fastening the seatbelt
yNever use a belt that is twisted or reversed. In
an accident, this can increase the risk or sever-
ity of injury.y Keep the lap belt as low as possible on your
hips. In a collision, this spreads the force of the
lap belt over stronger hip bones instead of
across the weaker abdomen.y Seatbelts provide maximum restraint when
the occupant sits well back and upright in the
seat. To reduce the risk of sliding under the
seatbelt in a collision, the front seatbacks
should be always used in the upright position
while the vehicle is running. If the front seat-

indicator light “ ” on the instrument panel also
comes on. „Daytime running light system
The tail lights, parking lights, and side marker
lights are not turned on by the daytime running
light system. The light switch must always be
turned to the “ ” position when it is dark
outside.
The low beam headlights will automatically come on at
reduced brightness when the engine has started, un-
der the following conditions:y The parking brake is fully released.
y The light switch is in the “OFF” or “ ” position.
Turn signal lever
1) Right turn
2) Left turn
To activate the right turn signal, push the turn signal le-
ver up. To activate the left turn signal, push the turn
signal lever down. When the turn is finished, the lever
will return automatically. If the lever does not return af-
ter cornering, return the lever to the neutral position by
hand.
To signal a lane change, push the turn signal lever up
or down slightly and hold it during the lane change.
The turn signal indicator lights will flash in the direction

OUT.TEMP switch
To check the outside air temperature, push the
“OUT.TEMP” switch. The outside air temperature will
be displayed for five seconds, and then the display au-
tomatically changes back to the inside air tempera- ture.
The display changes over from the inside air tempera-
ture to the outside air temperature as its normal indi-
cation if you keep the switch pressed for more than 2seconds.
NOTE y The outside air temperature display shows the
outside air temperature in a range from –22 to
131 °F (–30 to 55 °C).
y You can check the outside air temperature even
when the Automatic Climate Control is off. (The ig-
nition switch should be in the “ON” position.) y In the following cases, the display can indicate a
higher temperature than the actual outside air
temperature: – In direct sunlight
– When the vehicle is parked for a long period of
time with the engine kept running.
– During stop and go driving
T – Defroster switch
To defrost or dehumidify the windshield and side win- dow, push the defroster switch “ ”. When the
“ ” switch is pushed, regardless whether the air
conditioner is operating or not, outside air is drawn into
the passenger compartment, the air conditioner com-
pressor turns on, air flow is directed towards the wind-
shield and side windows, and the indicator light
“ ” on the control panel comes on.
Even with the defroster switch pushed, you can turn
the air conditioner ON/OFF and select interior air recir-
culation or outside air introduction as desired.
After eliminating the fogging from the windshield, set
the air conditioner back in the AUTO mode by pushing
the “AUTO” switch or turn off by pushing the “OFF”
switch or “ ” switch.

TWaveband selection
V FM/AM selection
Push the “BAND” button (2) to select FM1, FM2 or AM
reception. The display indicates which one is currently selected. V FM/AM/Weather band selection
Push the “BAND” button (2) to select FM1, FM2, AM
or Weather band (WB) reception. The display indi-
cates which is currently selected. T Stereo indicator
The stereo indicator “ST” will come on when an FM
stereo broadcast is received. T Tuning (TUNE)
V Manual tuning (TUNE)
Press the tuning button (3) marked “ ” to increase
the tuning frequency and press the tuning button
marked “ ” to decrease it.
Each time the button is pressed, the frequency interval
can be changed between 10 kHz in the AM mode and
0.2 MHz in the FM mode. V Seek tuning
If the tuning button (3) is pressed for longer than half
of a second, the radio will begin to automatically search for receivable frequencies and will stop at the
first one found. This function may not be available,
however, when radio signals are weak. In such a situ-
ation, perform manual tuning to select the desired sta-
tion. V
Manual tuning for weather band
When weather band mode is selected, press the tun-
ing button (3) marked “ ” to change the WB chan-
nel up and press the tuning button marked “ ” to
change the WB channel down. Each time the button is
pressed, the WB channel changes to the next chan-
nel. V Automatic tuning (SCAN)
Press the “SCAN” button (6) to change the radio to the
SCAN mode. In this mode, the radio scans through the
radio band until a station is found. The radio will stop
at the station for five seconds while displaying the fre-
quency, after which scanning will continue until the en-
tire band has been scanned from the low end to the
high end.
Press the “SCAN” button again to cancel the SCAN
mode and to stop on any displayed frequency.
When the “SCAN” button is pressed for automatic tun-
ing, stations are scanned in the direction of low fre-
quencies to high frequencies only.
Automatic tuning may not function properly if the sta-

lect FM1, FM2 or AM reception. Each time this button
is pressed, the band will change in the following order:
The display indicates which one is currently selected. TStereo indicator
The stereo indicator “ST” will come on when an FM
stereo broadcast is received. T Weather band button (WB)
Push the “WB” button (5) when the radio is off to turn
on the radio in the weather band.
Press the “WB” button when the radio is on to select
the weather band. T Manual tuning (TUNE)
V Manual tuning for AM and FM waveband
Push the tuning button (7) marked “ ” to increase
the tuning frequency and press the tuning button
marked “ ” to decrease it.
Each time the button is pressed, the frequency chang-
es 10 KHz in the AM waveband and 0.2 MHz in the FM
waveband. V
Seek tuning
If the tuning button (7) is pressed for longer than half
of a second, the radio will begin to automatically
search for receivable frequencies and will stop at the
first one found. This function may not be available,
however, when radio signals are weak. In such a situ-

Do not attempt to insert two or more discs
into the slot at a time. Doing so can cause me-
chanical damage to the CD changer. y Use only music CDs identified by

y Do not use CDs listed below which could
cause damage to the CD player.
y3-inch (8 cm) compact disc.
y Any disc with a peel-off or seal on it.
y Any disc with scratches and/or dust.
y Bent disc.
y Cleaning disc.
y CD accessory. (E.g., 3-inch (8 cm) disc
adapter)
y Do not insert or remove any disc when the
automatic transmission selector lever is in the
park position; the selector lever in that position
can interfere with disc insertion or removal,
causing scratches on the disc surface (for AT
vehicles).
T To insert a disc
1. Press one of the “Disc select” buttons (3) (num-
bered from 1 to 6) for which the disc indicator light (2) is “OFF”.
The Disc indicator lights are located directly above the
corresponding “Disc select” buttons.
2. The indicator will begin blinking. The blinking will last for 15 seconds.
During this period, insert a desired disc, and the disc
will begin to play. (If any disc is not inserted during this
period, the “Disc slot” (1) door will close. Repeat step
1.)
Be sure to hold a disc with the label side (the side
where titles are printed) up.
3. To insert another disc, repeat step 1 and 2 choos-
ing a different disc select button. T
To insert six discs at a time
1. Press and hold the “Disc select” button number 1
until all disc indicators begin blinking (about 1.5 sec-
onds).
2. The indicators will blink for 15 seconds. During this
period, insert desired six discs.
3. When all discs are loaded, the first disc will begin to
play. (If no disc is inserted within this 15 seconds, the
entire disc load sequence will be canceled.) T To remove a disc
1. Press the desired one of the “Disc select” buttons
(3) (numbered from 1 to 6) for which the disc indicator
light is on.

The following services are available within OnStar ser-
vice plans. Your vehicle comes with a specific one-
year service plan that allows use of some or all of the

Should your air bag deploy, a priority signal will be
sent to the OnStar Center with your vehicle’s location
(as long as cellular service and the vehicle’s electrical
system are operable). An advisor will attempt to con-
tact you to assess the nature of your emergency, and
then notify the necessary emergency services provid- er. T Emergency services
Should you require emergency assistance, press the
OnStar Emergency button and we will contact a near-
by emergency services provider with your exact loca-
tion and your request for help. T Roadside assistance *3

„To change the cruising speed
T To increase the speed (by control lever)
Push the control lever upward in the “ACCEL, RE-
SUME” direction and hold it until the vehicle reaches
the desired speed. Then, release the control lever.
The vehicle speed at that moment will be memorized
and treated as the new set speed.
When the difference between the actual vehicle speed
and the set speed is less than 4 mph (6.8 km/h), the
set speed can be increased 1 mph (1.6 km/h) each
time by pressing the control lever upward in the “AC-
CEL, RESUME” direction quickly within a half second. T To increase the speed (by accelerator pedal)
1. Depress the accelerator pedal to accelerate the ve-
hicle to the desired speed.
2. Push the control lever downward in the “SET,
COAST” direction once. Now the desired speed is set
and the vehicle will keep running at that speed without
depressing the accelerator pedal.
NOTE
If the difference between the actual vehicle speed
when the control lever is pushed downward and
the speed last time you set is less than 4 mph (6.8
km/h), the vehicle speed will be lowered by 1 mph (1.6 km/h). This occurs because the cruise control
system unit regards this lever operation as that in-
tended to decrease the vehicle speed. T
To decrease the speed (by control lever)
Push the control lever downward in the “SET, COAST”
direction and hold it until the vehicle reaches the de-
sired speed. Then, release the control lever. The vehi-
cle speed at that moment will be memorized and treat-
ed as the new set speed.
When the difference between the actual vehicle speed
and the set speed is less than 4 mph (6.8 km/h), the
set speed can be lowered 1 mph (1.6 km/h) each time
by pressing the control lever downward in the “SET,
COAST” direction quickly within a half second. T To decrease the speed (by brake pedal)
1. Depress the brake pedal to release cruise control
temporarily.
2. When the speed decreases to the desired speed,
press the control lever downward in the “SET,
COAST” direction once. Now the desired speed is set
and the vehicle will keep running at that speed without
depressing the accelerator pedal.
