3935-1. Essential information
If you think something is wrong If you notice any of the followi ng symptoms, your vehicle proba bly
needs adjustment or repair. Cont act your Toyota d ealer as soon as
possible.
■ Visible symptoms
● Fluid leaks under the vehicle
(Water dripping from t he air conditioning after use is normal.)
● Flat-looking tires or uneven tire wear
● Vehicles with a monochrome multi-information display: The
engine coolant temperature gauge needle continually points
higher than normal
● Vehicles with a color multi-information display: The high
engine coolant temperature wa rning light flashes or illumi-
nates
■ Audible symptoms
● Changes in exhaust sound
● Excessive tire squeal when cornering
● Strange noises related to the suspension system
● Pinging or other noises related to the engine
■ Operational symptoms
● Engine missing, stumbling or running rough
● Appreciable loss of power
● Vehicle pulls heavily to one side when braking
● Vehicle pulls heavily to one side when driving on a level road
● Loss of brake effectiveness, s pongy feeling, pedal almost
touches the floor

If a warning light tur ns on or a war ning buzzer sounds... Stop the vehicle immediately. Continuing to drive the vehicle
may be dangerous.
The following warning indicates a possible problem in the brake sys-
tem. Immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place and contact y our

• Low brake fluid
• Malfunction in the brake system
This light also comes on when the parking brake is not
released. If the light turns off after the parking brake is ful ly
released the system is operating normally.Calmly perform the following acti ons if any of the warning ligh ts turn
on or flash. If a light turns on or flashes, but then turns off , this does
not necessarily indicate a malfunction in the system.

Failing to investigate the cause of the following warnings may lead to
the system operating abnormally and possibly cause an accident.

• The electronic engine control system;
• The electronic throttle control system;
• The electronic automatic transmission control system.

Indicates a malfunction in:
• The SRS airbag system;
• The seat belt pretensioner system;
• The front passenger occupant classification system.

Indicates a malfunction in:
• The ABS;
• The brake assist system.
Electric power steering warning light (warning buzzer)
Indicates a malfunction in the EPS (Electric Power Steer-
ing) system.
Slip indicator
Indicates a malfunction in:
• The VSC system;
• The TRAC system;
• The hill-start assist control system.
Automatic headlight leveling system warning light
Indicates a malfunction in the automatic headlight leveling
system.

WARNING■
If the tire pressure wa rning light comes on
Be sure to observe the following precautions. Failure to do so could
cause loss of vehicle control and result in death or serious in jury.●
Stop your vehicle in a safe plac e as soon as possible. Adjust t he tire
inflation pressure immediately.●
If the tire pressure warning light comes on even after tire inf lation pres-
sure adjustment, it is probable that you have a flat tire. Chec k the tires.
If the tire is flat, change to the spare tire and have the flat tire repaired
by the nearest Toyota dealer.●
Avoid abrupt maneuvering and braking. If the vehicle tires dete riorate,
you could lose control of the s teering wheel or the brakes.■
If a blowout or sudden air leakage should occur
The tire pressure warning system may not activate immediately.

If a warning message is displayed (vehicles with a color multi-information display)
Stop the vehicle immediately. Continuing to drive the vehicle
may be dangerous.
The following warning indicates a possible problem in the brake sys-

• The brake system is malfunctioning

perform the following actions:

If you have a flat tire Your vehicle is equipped with a spare tire. The flat tire can b e
replaced with the spare tire.
■ Before jacking up the vehicle
● Stop the vehicle in a safe place on a hard, flat surface.
● Set the parking brake.
● Shift the shift lever to P (vehicles with an automatic transmis -
sion) or R (vehicles with a manual transmission).
● Stop the engine.
● Turn on the emergency flashers. ( P. 3 8 4 )

WARNING■
Replacing a flat tire ●
Do not touch the disc wheels or the area around the brakes imme di-
ately after the vehicl e has been driven.
After the vehicle has been driven the disc wheels and the area around
the brakes will be extremely hot . Touching these areas with han ds, feet
or other body parts w hile changing a tire, e tc. may result in b urns.●
Do not attach a heavily damaged wheel ornament, as it may fly o ff the
wheel while the ve hicle is moving.●
Failure to follow these precautions could cause the wheel nuts to
loosen and the tire to fall off, resulting in death or serious injury.
• Have the wheel nuts tightened with a torque wrench to 89 ft•lb f (120
N•m, 12.2 kgf•m) as s oon as possible after changing wheels.
• When installing a tire, only use wheel nuts that have been spe cifi-
cally designed for that wheel.
• If there are any cracks or deformations in the bolt screws, nu t
threads or bolt holes of the wheel, have the vehicle inspected by
your Toyota dealer.
• When installing the wheel nuts, be sure to install them with t he
tapered ends facing inward. ( P. 358)
