Tire pressure warning system operation
The tire pressure warning system may not provide warning immedi ately
if a tire bursts or if sudden air leakage occurs.■
When inspecting or replacing tires
Observe the following precautions to prevent accidents.
Failure to do so may cause damage to parts of the drive train, as well as
dangerous handling characteristics, which may lead to an accide nt
resulting in death or serious injury. ●
Make sure to install 4 tires that are of the specified size, an d that all 4
tires are the same size, same ma ker, same brand and tread patte rn.●
Do not use tire sizes other t han those recommended by Toyota.●
Only use radial tires.●
Do not mix summer, all season and snow tires.
●
Do not use tires that have be en used on anot her vehicle.
Do not use tires if you do not kno w how they were used previous ly.
NOTICE■
Repairing or replacing tires, wheels, tire pressure warning val ves,
transmitters and tire valve caps
●
When removing or fitting the wheels, tires or the tire pressure warning
valves and transmitters, contact your Toyota dealer as the tire pres-
sure warning valves and transmitters may be damaged if not hand led
correctly.
●
Make sure to install the tire valve caps. If the tire valve cap s are not
installed, water could enter the tire pressure warning valves a nd the
tire pressure warning valves could be bound.
●
When replacing tire valve caps, do not use tire valve caps othe r than
those specified. The c ap may become stuck.

NOTICE■
Driving on rough roads
Take particular care when driving on roads with loose surfaces or pot
holes.
These conditions may cause losses in tire inflation pressure, r educing
the cushioning ability of the tire s. In addition, driving on ro ugh roads may
cause damage to the tires themselves, as well as the vehicle’s wheels
and body.■
Low profile tires and wheels
Low profile tires may cause greater damage than usual to the ti re wheel
when receiving impact from the road surface. Therefore pay attention to
the following: ●
Be sure to use proper tire inflation pressure. If tires are und er-inflated,
they may be damaged more severely.●
Avoid pot holes, uneven pavement, curbs and other road hazards.
Failure to do so may lead to severe tire and wheel damage.

If tire inflation pressures become low while driving
Do not continue driving, or your tires and/or wheels may be rui ned.

Proper inflation is critical to save tire performance
Keep your tires properly inflated.
If the tires are not properly inflated, the following condition s may occur
which could lead to an accident resulting in death or serious injury:●
Excessive wear●
Uneven wear●
Poor handling●
Possibility of blowouts result ing from overheated tires●
Air leaking from bet ween tire and wheel●
Wheel deformation and/or tire damage●
Greater possibility of tire damage while driving ( due to road h azards,
expansion joints, sharp edges in the road, etc.)
NOTICE■
When inspecting and adjust ing tire inflation pressure
Be sure to reinstall the tire valve caps.
If a valve cap is not installed, dirt or moisture may get into the valve and
cause an air leak, resulting in decreased tire inflation pressu re.

Maintenance and care
Wheels If a wheel is bent, cracked or heavily corroded, it should be
replaced. Otherwise, the tire may separate from the wheel or
cause loss of handling control.
■ Wheel selection
When replacing wheels, care should be taken to ensure that
they are equivalent to those removed in load capacity, diameter ,
rim width, and inset
* .
Replacement wheels are avail able at your Toyota dealer.
* : Conventionally refer red to as “offset”.
Toyota does not recommend using:
● Wheels of different sizes or types
● Used wheels
● Bent wheels that have been straightened
■ Aluminum wheel precautions
● Use only Toyota wheel nuts and wrenches designed for use
with your aluminum wheels.
● When rotating, repairing or chang ing your tires, check that the
wheel nuts are still tight afte r driving 1000 m iles (1600 km).
● Be careful not to damage the aluminum wheels when using
tire chains.
● Use only Toyota genuine balan ce weights or equivalent and a
plastic or rubber hammer when balancing your wheels.

When replacing wheels
The wheels of your Toyota are equipped with tire pressure warni ng
valves and transmitters that allow the tire pressure warning sy stem to
provide advanced warning in the event of a loss in tire inflati on pressure.
Whenever wheels are replaced, the tire pressure warning valves and
transmitters mus t be installed. (  P. 3 4 6 )
WARNING■
When replacing wheels ●
Do not use wheels that are a different size from those recommen ded in
the Owner’s Manual, as this may result in loss of handling cont rol.●
Never use an inner tube in a leaking wheel which is designed fo r a
tubeless tire. Doing so may result in an accident, causing deat h or seri-
ous injury.

When installing the wheel nuts
●
Never use oil or grease on the wheel bolts or wheel nuts.
Oil and grease may cause the wheel nuts to be excessively tight ened,
leading to bolt or disc wheel damage. In addition, the oil or g rease can
cause the wheel nuts to loosen and the wheel may fall off, caus ing an
accident and resulting in death or serious injury. Remove any o il or
grease from the wheel bolts or wheel nuts. ●
Be sure to install the wheel nuts with
the tapered ends facing inward.
Installing the nuts with the tapered
ends facing outward can cause the
wheel to break and eventually cause
the wheel to come off while driving,
which could lead to an accident

Replacing tire inflation pressu re warning valves and transmitte rs●
Because tire repair or replaceme nt may affect the tire pressure warn-
ing valves and transmitters, make sure to have tires serviced b y your
Toyota dealer or other qualifie d service shop. In addition, mak e sure to
purchase your tire pressure warning valves and transmitters at your
Toyota dealer.●
Ensure that only genuine Toyota w heels are used on your vehicle .
Tire pressure warning valves and transmitters may not work prop erly
with non-genuine wheels.

Replacing light bulbs
■ Front side marker lights
Turn the steering wheel in the
opposite direction of the light to
be replaced. Turn the steering wheel to a point
that allows your hand to easily fit
between the tire and fender liner.
Remove the clips and partly
remove the fender liner. To prevent damage to the vehicle,
cover the tip of the screwdriver
with a rag.
Release the light's claw. Insert the screwdriver into the
hole. While firmly pushing the
screwdriver forward, move it
towards the inside of the vehicle.
To prevent damage to the vehicle,
wrap the tip of the screwdriver

If your vehicle needs to be towed
Before towing
The following may indicate a problem with your transmission. Co ntact
your Toyota dealer before towing.
● The engine is running, but t he vehicle will not move.
● The vehicle makes an abnormal sound.
Emergency towing
If a tow truck is not available in an emergency, your vehicle m ay be
temporarily towed using a cable or chain secured to the emergen cy
towing eyelet. This should only be attempted on hard surfaced r oads
for short distances at low speeds.
A driver must be in the vehicle to steer and operate the brakes . The
vehicle’s wheels, drive train, axles, steering and brakes must be in
good condition.
For vehicles with an automatic transmission, only the front tow ing
eyelet may be used. If towing is necessary, we recommen d having your vehicle towed by
your Toyota dealer or a commerci al towing service, using a lift -type
truck or a flat bed truck.
Use a safety chain system for all towing, and abide by all stat e/pro-
vincial and local laws.
If towing from the rear, the vehicle's front wheels and axles m ust be
in good condition. (  P. 391)
If they are damaged, use a to wing dolly or flat bed truck.

NOTICE■ To prevent causing serious damage to the transmission in emerge ncy
towing (vehicles with an a utomatic transmission)
Never tow a vehicle from the rear with four wheels on the groun d. This may
cause serious damage to the transmission.
■ To prevent damage to the vehicle
● When towing this vehicle, make sure to observe the following:
• Do not use a wire rope
• Keep vehicle speed below 20 mph (30 km/h) and do not tow for d is-
tances over 19 miles (30 km)
• Tow the vehicle in the forward direction
• Do not apply rope to the vehicle's suspension and so forth
● Do not tow another vehicle, boat (trailer) and so forth, that i s heavier than
this vehicle.
■ When towing down a long slope
Use a wheel lift-type or flat bed truck. (  P. 391, 392)
If a wheel lift-type or flat bed truck is not used, the brakes may overheat,
leading to poor brake performance.

■ Installing towing eyelets to the vehicle
Make sure that towing eyelet is installed securely.
If not securely installed, towing eyelets may come loose during towing. This
may lead to accidents that cause serious injury or even death.
■ After towing
● Always remove the towing eyelet. Failure to do so can cause the SRS air-
bags to not operate correctly in the event of a frontal collisi on.
● Always remove the towing eyelets. Failure to do so may prevent the fuel
pump shut off system from operating properly if the vehicle receives an
impact from the rear.
