WARNING
■Road accident cautions
If your vehicle is involved in an accident, observe the following precautions
to reduce the risk of death or serious injury:
● Stop the vehicle in a safe place to prevent subsequent accidents, apply
the parking brake, shift the shift position to P, and turn the hybrid system
off. ( P. 190)
● Do not touch the high voltage parts, cables and connectors.
● If electric wires are exposed inside or outside your vehicle, an electric
shock may occur. Never touch exposed electric wires.
● If a fluid leak occurs, do not touch the fluid as it may be strong alkaline
electrolyte from the hybrid battery (traction battery). If it comes into contact
with your skin or eyes, wash it off immediately with a large amount of water
or, if possible, boric acid solution. Seek immediate medical attention.
● If a fire occurs in the hybrid vehicle, leave the vehicle as soon as possible.
Never use a fire extinguisher that is not meant for electric fires. Using even
a small amount of water may be dangerous.
● If your vehicle needs to be towed, do so with the front wheels raised. If the
wheels connected to the electric motor (traction motor) are on the ground
when towing, the motor may continue to generate electricity. This may
cause a fire. ( P. 484)
● Carefully inspect the ground under the vehicle. If you find that liquid has
leaked onto the ground, the fuel system may have been damaged. Leave
the vehicle as soon as possible.

With the shift position in D, depress the brake pedal.
Set the parking brake. ( P. 228)
Shift the shift position to P. ( P. 221)
If parking on a hill, block the wheels as needed.
Press the power switch off to stop the hybrid system.
Lock the door, making sure that you have the key on your person.
Firmly set the parking brake and t hen shift the shift position to D.
Gently depress the accelerator pedal.
Release the parking brake.
■ When starting off on an uphill
The hill-start assist control will activate. ( P. 305)
■ For fuel-efficient driving
Keep in mind that hybrid vehicle are similar to conventional vehicles. And it is
necessary to refrain from activities such as sudden acceleration. ( P. 311)
■ Driving in the rain
● Drive carefully when it is raining, because visibility will be reduced, the win-
dows may become fogged-up, and the road will be slippery.
● Drive carefully when it starts to rain, because the road surface will be espe-
cially slippery.
● Refrain from high speeds when driving on an expressway in the rain,
because there may be a layer of water between the tires and the road sur-
face, preventing the steering and brakes from operating properly.
■ Breaking in your new Toyota
To extend the life of the vehicle, observing the following precautions is recom-
mended:
● For the first 300 km (200 miles):
Avoid sudden stops.
● For the first 800 km (500 miles) (vehicles with towing package):
Do not tow a trailer.
● For the first 2000 km (1200 miles):
• Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
• Avoid sudden acceleration.
• Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.

Trailer towing
For this model, only vehicles with a towing package can tow
another vehicle. Before towing, check the gross combination
vehicle mass and gross vehicle mass described on the informa-
tion tag (manufacturer's label) to see whether or not your vehicle
can tow another vehicle. ( P. 204)
If the gross combination vehicle mass is greater than the gross
vehicle mass, your vehicle is equipped with a towing package
and can tow another vehicle. On the other hand, if the gross
combination vehicle mass is the same as the gross vehicle
mass, your vehicle is not equipped with a towing package and
cannot tow another vehicle.
Vehicles without a towing package
Toyota does not recommend towing a trailer with your vehicle.
Toyota also does not recommend the installation of a tow hitch
or the use of a tow hitch carrier for a wheelchair, scooter, bicy-
cle, etc. Your vehicle is not de signed for trailer towing or for the
use of tow hitch mounted carriers.

◆Weight limits
Check the allowable towing capacity, GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass),
MPAC (Maximum Permissible Ax le Capacity), and permissible
drawbar load before towing. ( P. 552)
◆Towing hitch/bracket
Toyota recommends the use of the Toyota hitch/bracket for your
vehicle. Other products of a su itable nature and comparable quality
may also be used.
Vehicles with a towing package
Your vehicle is designed primarily as a passenger carrying vehi-
cle. Towing a trailer will have an adverse effect on handling, per-
formance, braking, durability, an d fuel consumption. Your safety
and satisfaction depend on the pr oper use of correct equipment
and cautious driving habits. Fo r your safety and the safety of
others, do not overload the vehicle or trailer.
To tow a trailer safely, use extreme care and drive the vehicle in
accordance with the trailer’s characteristics and operating con-
ditions.
Toyota warranties do not apply to damage or malfunction
caused by towing a trailer for commercial purposes.
Ask your local authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional for further details
before towing, as there are a dditional legal requirements in
some countries.

Exceeding this weight is danger-
ous. ( P. 552)
When towing a trailer, use a fric-
tion coupler or friction stabilizer
(sway control device).
Permissible drawbar load
Allocate the trailer load so that the drawbar load is greater than 25 kg
(55.1 lb.) or 4% of the towing capacity. Do not let the drawbar load
exceed the indicated weight. ( P. 552)

■Gross combination vehicle mass
The sum of the total vehicle weight and the weight of the trailer
being towed can be used to judge whether or not the vehicle can be
used to tow another vehicle.
If the gross combination vehicle mass is greater than the gross
vehicle mass, your vehicle is e quipped with a towing package and
can tow another vehicle. On the other hand, if the gross combina-
tion vehicle mass is the same as the gross vehicle mass, your vehi-
cle is not equipped with a towing package and cannot tow another
vehicle.
■Gross vehicle mass
The combined weight of the driver, passengers, luggage, towing
hitch, total curb mass and drawbar load should not exceed the
gross vehicle mass by more than 100 kg (220.5 lb.). Exceeding this
weight is dangerous.
■Maximum permissible rear axle capacity
The weight borne by the rear ax le should not exceed the maximum
permissible rear axle capacity by 15% or more. Exceeding this
weight is dangerous.
The values for towing capacity were derived from testing conducted
at sea level. Take note that e ngine output and towing capacity will
be reduced at high altitudes.
