start system: To stop the
engine, press and hold the
engine switch for 2 consecutive
seconds or more, or press it
briefly 3 times or more in suc-
cession.
If the shift position cannot be changed to N (hybrid model)
Keep depressing the brake pedal with both feet to reduce vehicle
speed as much as possible.

CAUTION
If the engine has to be turned off while driving (except hybrid model)
Power assist for the brakes and steering wheel will be lost, making the
brake pedal harder to depress and the steering wheel heavier to turn.
Decelerate as much as possible before turning off the engine.
Vehicles without a smart entry & start system: Never attempt to remove
the key, as doing so will lock the steering wheel.
If the hybrid system has to be turned off while driving (hybrid model)
Power assist for the brakes and steering wheel will be lost, making the
brake pedal harder to depress and the steering wheel heavier to turn.
Decelerate as much as possible before turning off the hybrid system.

7-2. Steps to take in an emergency
The following may indicate a problem with your transmission. Contact
any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional before towing.
Except hybrid model
The engine is running but the vehicle will not move.
The vehicle makes an abnormal sound.
Hybrid model
The hybrid system is operating, but the vehicle will not move.
The vehicle makes an abnormal sound.
Hybrid model: If there is a malfunction in the P position control sys-
tem, the smart entry & start system or the immobilizer system, or if the
12-volt battery is discharged, the vehicle cannot be towed with the
front wheels on the ground, as the front wheels may be locked. In this
case, transport the vehicle with both front wheels or all four wheels
lifted.
If your vehicle needs to be towed
If towing is necessary, we recommend having your vehicle
towed by any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional or a commercial tow-
ing service, using a lift-type truck or flat bed truck.
Use a safety chain system for all towing, and abide by all state/
provincial and local laws.

If you use chains or cables to tie
down your vehicle, the angles
shaded in black must be 45.
Do not overly tighten the tie
downs or the vehicle may be dam-
aged.

Vehicles without a smart entry & start system:
Put the engine switch in the “ACC” (engine off) or “ON” position (engine
running).
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system:
Put the engine switch in ACCESSORY (engine off) or IGNITION ON
mode (engine running).
Shift the shift lever to N.
Release the parking brake.
Hybrid model
Turn the power switch to ON mode.
Do not turn the power switch to ACCESSORY mode.
Shift the shift position to N.
When the power switch is in ACCESSORY mode, the shift position can-
not be changed to N.
Release the parking brake.

CAUTION
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.
Caution while towing
Use extreme caution when towing the vehicle.
Avoid sudden starts or erratic driving maneuvers which place excessive
stress on the emergency towing eyelets and the cables or chains. Always
be cautious of the surroundings and other vehicles while towing.
Except hybrid model: Do not turn the engine switch off.
Doing so will lock the steering wheel and prevent operation, possibly caus-
ing an accident and resulting in death or serious injury.
Hybrid model: Do not turn the power switch off.
This may lead to an accident as the front wheels will be locked by the
parking lock.
Except hybrid model: If the engine is not running, the power assist for the
brakes and steering will not function, making steering and braking more
difficult.
Hybrid model: If the hybrid system is not operating, the power assist for
the brakes and steering will not function, making steering and braking
more difficult.
Installing towing eyelets to the vehicle
Make sure that towing eyelets are installed securely.
If not securely installed, towing eyelets may come loose during towing.

NOTICE
To prevent causing serious damage to the transmission when towing
using a wheel-lift type truck (Multidrive or hybrid transmission)
Never tow this vehicle from the rear with the front wheels on the ground.
To prevent causing serious damage to the Stop & Start system when
towing (vehicles with a Stop & Start system)
Never tow this vehicle with four wheels on the ground. Use a flatbed truck,
or lift up front or rear of the vehicle by using a wheel-lift type truck.
To prevent damage to the vehicle when towing using a wheel-lift type
truck (Multidrive or hybrid transmission)
When raising the vehicle, ensure adequate ground clearance for towing at
the opposite end of the raised vehicle. Without adequate clearance, the
vehicle could be damaged while being towed.
To prevent damage to the vehicle when towing using a wheel-lift type
truck (multi-mode manual transmission or manual transmission)
Vehicles without a smart entry & start system: Do not tow the vehicle from
the rear when the engine switch is in the “LOCK” position or the key is
removed. The steering lock mechanism is not strong enough to hold the
front wheels straight.
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system: Do not tow the vehicle from the
rear when the engine switch is off. The steering lock mechanism is not
strong enough to hold the front wheels straight.
When raising the vehicle, ensure adequate ground clearance for towing at
the opposite end of the raised vehicle. Without adequate clearance, the
vehicle could be damaged while being towed.
To prevent body damage when towing with a sling-type truck
Do not tow with a sling-type truck, either from the front or rear.
To prevent causing serious damage to the transmission in emergency
towing
Vehicles with a Multidrive or hybrid transmission, never tow a vehicle from
the rear with four wheels on the ground. This may cause serious damage to
the transmission.

When trouble arises
Fluid leaks under the vehicle.
(Water dripping from the air conditioning after use is normal.)
Flat-looking tires or uneven tire wear
Except hybrid model (vehicles without a multi-information display):
High engine coolant temperature warning light comes on.
Except hybrid model (vehicles with a multi-information display):
High engine coolant temperature gauge needle continually points
higher than normal.
Hybrid model: The high engine coolant temperature display is
shown on the multi-information display.
Changes in exhaust sound
Excessive tire squeal when cornering
Strange noises related to the suspension system
Pinging or other noises related to the engine
Engine missing, stumbling or running roughly
Appreciable loss of power
Vehicle pulls heavily to one side when braking
Vehicle pulls heavily to one side when driving on a level road
Loss of brake effectiveness, spongy feeling, pedal almost touches
the floor
If you think something is wrong
If you notice any of the following symptoms, your vehicle proba-
bly needs adjustment or repair. Contact any authorized Toyota
dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped pro-
fessional as soon as possible.

Follow the procedure below to restart the engine after the system is
activated.
Vehicles without a smart entry & start system
Turn the engine switch to the “ACC” or “LOCK” position.
Restart the engine.
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system
Turn the engine switch to ACCESSORY mode or turn it off.
Restart the engine.
Fuel pump shut off system (gasoline engine
only)
To minimize the risk of fuel leakage when the engine stalls or
when an airbag inflates upon collision, the fuel pump shut off
system stops the supply of fuel to the engine.
NOTICE
Before starting the engine
Inspect the ground under the vehicle.
If you find that fuel has leaked onto the ground, the fuel system has been
damaged and is in need of repair. Do not restart the engine.

cle that may lead to an accident. Immediately stop the vehicle in a
